Multiple vaults in 1Password for Windows

there has already been a discussion on "Multiple vaults in 1Password for Windows" in April 2014 which says that the feature to unlock multiple vaults in windows with one password (as in mac os) will hopefully be implemented in the newer version. Now its July 2017 and it seems that this feature is still missing which is a big usability problem for our users on windows. Is there any plan to implement this in a newer version?

You also can't move an entry from one vault to another on windows which makes it necessary to be in the correct vault you want to store the password in which causes a lot of work for our employees on windows. Mac version is perfect but I don't understand why the windows version was not planned that well since the windows version was released after the mac version...

best regards
Peter

  • Hi @SchuhmannPeter,

    Thanks for writing in.

Now its July 2017 and it seems that this feature is still missing which is a big usability problem for our users on windows. Is there any plan to implement this in a newer version?

It has already been implemented in 1Password 6 for Windows released back in October and it lets you copy and move items between vaults as expected. Check out the recent blog post on 1Password 6.6 release here: https://blog.agilebits.com/2017/06/20/introducing-1password-6-6-for-windows/

However, it is not yet available for standalone vault users yet, that's why it is not available as an upgrade to all 1Password 4 users. We're still planning to support this later but no ETA.

You also can't move an entry from one vault to another on windows which makes it necessary to be in the correct vault you want to store the password in which causes a lot of work for our employees on windows.

For this, we've built 1Password Teams to work more securely to share data between vaults. You can check it out here: https://1password.com/teams/

I don't understand why the windows version was not planned that well since the windows version was released after the mac version...

Technically, that is not the case.

1Password 1-4 for Windows was developed at the time of 1Password 2/3 for macOS, which did not have All Vaults either.

1Password 4 for macOS was the first major version that was rebuilt but it wasn't something we could adopt in 1Password 4 easily, everything was different. 1Password 6 for Windows is where it is consistent with the way 1Password 4-6 for macOS was built.

Yes, we could've done this better but we're working on it.

@SchuhmannPeter: One thing that isn't obvious which might help you is that items can be literally copied and pasted between vaults in 1Password 4. Just select the ones you want, press Ctrl C, switch vaults, and Ctrl V. You'll need to delete them from the originating vault (you can do that after copying to the clipboard if you wish). The only exception to this is that it does not work for attachments, so those you would need to save to disk and then add them to the other vault. I hope this helps!

    @brenty thanks for the hint.

@MikeT Looking forward to see the features in 1Password 4 Upgrade version. Please let me know if you got an ETA.

  • Hi @SchuhmannPeter,

On behalf of Brenty, you're welcome.

No ETA yet but you can see our latest announcement about local vaults/licenses here: https://blog.agilebits.com/2017/08/01/1password-6-7-for-windows-a-feature-buffet/
