Why are additional items created of type "Password" when changing "Logins"?

Recently I went through and updated several accounts using weak passwords to strong passwords using 1Password. I used the Firefox extension. I logged into each site and went to the "change password" section. I used the password generator from the browser extension to create the new password and then pasted that into the new password fields on the website. Once submitted, the extension offered to update my 1Password Login and I allowed it to. It appears that a "Password" item was also created in my Vault that doesn't have any additional data in it (what account it belongs to, etc). Why are these additional items created and what is their purpose? The new password (and old passwords) are documented nicely in the "Login" item iteself.

1Password Version: 6.7.454
Extension Version: 4.6.8
OS Version: Windows 10
Sync Type: 1Password.com

  • Hey @btownguy! These are created juuuust in case those new passwords don't get updated properly in their associated Login items for any reason. This way, you have a record of the passwords you've generated and are able to access your account on that website (and manually update your Login item) without having to reset the password or use some variety of wizardry to remember the password you generated. If you're certain your Login items have updated properly, you can feel free to delete the Password items, if you'd like. :+1:

That's logical and the answer I was hoping for (safe to delete after confirming the login was updated correctly).

    Thanks!

  • Any time, @btownguy :chuffed:
