win change master password instructions do not match app. options/security has no place to change

I'm trying to change a master password on win 10 version 1password app. The instructions given do not correspond to the app. There is no file menu and no preferences. The options gear/security category has no place to change the password. How do i do it?
Thanks

  • @bometailey: It sounds like you're following the instructions for if you don't have a 1Password account when, if you're using 1Password 6, you do have a 1Password account. You'll want to change your Master Password on 1Password.com as described right near the top here. Note that you need to update your Master Password in the app afterwards as well. You'll need to unlock 1Password 6 with your old Master Password, then click the red error banner to enter your new one and complete the update process. :chuffed:

OK, thanks for the speedy response. We have a family account. Now, I am entirely confused about the term "master password". There's a password for our 1P.com account. Is that the master password? Does everybody in the family account have to have the same "master password"? My vague understanding is that on each device there's a "master password". I use 1P on several devices and they have different "master passwords" (although I may be getting 1P warnings about that). Can my wife have a different "master password" than I? And what's the relationship of a device "master password" and the 1P account password? I can change the "master password" on the 1P account but I don't know what affect that has on the different family member/device "master passwords".
    Thanks for your help.

@bometailey: Likewise, thanks for following up. Great questions! :)

OK, thanks for the speedy response. We have a family account. Now, I am entirely confused about the term "master password". There's a password for our 1P.com account. Is that the master password? Does everybody in the family account have to have the same "master password"?

No. Each person under the 1Password Families plan will have their own account with unique credentials: the Secret Key is randomly generated, and the Master Password for each person's account is chosen by them.

My vague understanding is that on each device there's a "master password". I use 1P on several devices and they have different "master passwords" (although I may be getting 1P warnings about that).

So, we always recommend using the same Master Password since remembering only one allows you to use a stronger one...but with the standalone apps, using 1Password without an account, we can't really enforce that, so if you keep choosing a different Master Password each time you setup a device with a new, self-contained local vault, you'll end up in that kind of situation.

The good news is that with a 1Password.com account, so long as you're using that on each device — not local vaults — you'll be using the Master Password for your account to unlock 1Password on each device too.

Can my wife have a different "master password" than I?

Yep! We recommend it (unless you both agree you'd prefer to use the same one, perhaps for emergency purposes).

And what's the relationship of a device "master password" and the 1P account password? I can change the "master password" on the 1P account but I don't know what affect that has on the different family member/device "master passwords". Thanks for your help.

No relation. Prior to 1Password.com memberships, everyone used only local vaults, each of which can have a different Master Password, as you know. These are not centrally managed. With a 1Password.com account though, you'll have a single Master Password for your account. This will not affect any local vaults you still have, or others' accounts.

If you have all of your data in your 1Password.com account already (you can confirm this by signing into 1Password.com in your web browser), then the best thing to do would be to save a copy of your Emergency Kit and then reset 1Password on your devices. From there you'll have a clean slate on each one, and then you just need to sign into your 1Password.com account to setup 1Password on each and access your data.

I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Brenty, thank you for your detailed explanations, I think the smoke is beginning to clear. Part of the difficulty for me is that some of the terminology is ambiguous, e.g. "master password". I never knew if it referred to the password for the family account or to a device-specific login. I'm still unclear about this: is my wife's account her key to our family account (the shared vault) or does it refer to a completely separate set of data? In the latter case, how do we share data and what is the point of a family account?
Thanks again for your considerable help.

@bometailey: Well, if it were up to us, everyone would really have only a single long, strong, unique Master Password. We can make recommendations to that effect, but it's up to each individual user whether or not they do so. ;)

We have a great guide on using 1Password Families to securely share data with you loved ones:

    Share 1Password with your family

Each family member you invite has their own account, with unique login credentials (Secret Key, Master Password, etc.), and their own Private vault that only they can access.

By default, the family as a whole has a Shared vault which is accessible to all family members. Other vaults can be created to be shared with some, all, or none of the others. And any family member just signs into their account to access any of the vaults which are shared with them. This is all just handled through their account.

Let me know if that helps, and if you have other questions. :)

Hi brent, I do have another question, when we refer to multiple accounts, if we have a family account, are both my wife and I able to have an account based on the family account? Or, otherwise, do we each have to get a unique account (at $36/year) that some how get linked to the family account?
    Thanks

@bometailey: Using a 1Password Families membership with each of you having accounts as part of that is recommended. That way you can securely share vaults there together. If you each use an individual 1Password.com membership, your accounts are not associated with each other, and there is no way to share vaults between them.

Also, 1Password Families is cheaper than two individual accounts. ;)

I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Hi brenty, I think (by dint of reading 1P documentation, how family members access the shared vault of the family account. So I don't have that question any longer. But I still don't get the connection of the passwords on different devices with a given account. E.g. I have a different password on my iPad than my Mac and they both work.

Hi brenty, my last comment was missing some words so it didn't make much sense. It was supposed to read:

I think (by dint of reading 1P documentation), I've discovered how family members access the shared vault of the family account. So I don't have that question any longer. But I still don't get the connection of the passwords on different devices with a given account. E.g. I have a different password on my iPad than my Mac and they both work.

@bometailey: Sure thing! The Master Password of the first vault/account setup in the app will be the one used to unlock it. So, if you have only a 1Password.com account setup in the app, its Master password will be used to unlock it. If, however, you have a Primary (local) vault setup, its Master Password will be needed to unlock instead. Does that help? :)
