Any update on this? I'm using 1password on Windows and viewing attachments is quite difficult. In the Firefox extension, left-clicking a Secure Note does nothing (why is this?), and right-clicking allows one to either view or edit the Secure Note in the standalone 1password program. However, clicking on an attachment in a Secure Note in the standalone program only allows one to download the file, and the file is not automatically deleted after the 1password program is closed.

I would simply like to open the attachment for viewing in as few clicks as possible, preferably directly from the Firefox extension, and then to have the file deleted from the cache as soon as I close the display window (e.g. some image viewer program). This is possible in MacOS, but not in Windows.

@jtarvainen: I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. The new 1Password for Windows version 6 app (the topic of this discussion) does not use attachments since 1Password.com accounts, which it is designed for, do not support them.

I'm also not sure what you're referring to with 1Password for Mac, as it isn't possible to right click items in 1Password mini (in the browser or otherwise) at all. Can you clarify?

We can certainly consider different ways of making it easier to access information in 1Password for Windows, but QuickLook, which we use to great effect in 1Password for Mac, is an Apple technology and not available on Windows. So we will not be able to do the exact same things on both platforms, much like 1Password for Windows cannot use the menuing 1Password mini does on the Mac, since that uses Apple's frameworks.

@brenty: Right, I'll try to clarify. I'm using 1Password on both Windows and MacOS, both the standalone program (1Password 6) and a browser extension (Chrome & Firefox). Though I referred to attachments earlier, we can limit the discussion to separate Documents, which are supported on 1Password 6 for Windows.

In the standalone program, on MacOS, I'm able to view an image (whether as an attachment to a Secure Note, or in a separate Document) without having to first save it as a file. On Windows, on the other hand, I first have to save it as a file and open it outside 1Password, and the file will then remain unencrypted on the drive until I manually delete it. This is inconvenient. I understand that the QuickLook function is not available on Windows, but wouldn't it be possible to have 1Password save the file in the cache, open the file using the operating system's default image viewer, and then delete the cached file from the hard drive when the user closes it? This is what e.g. LastPass does in such cases, and it would save the user a lot of clicks, and be more secure to boot.

Also, in the browser extension, on Windows, clicking on a Document (e.g. an image file) does nothing. I don't have my Mac with me at the moment, so I don't remember exactly what the options are there, but I seem to remember that I was at least able to use the browser extension to open the Document in the standalone program. Wouldn't it be possible to add this option in the Windows browser extension as well, so there would be at least some way to open a Document from within the browser? Or even better, to have 1Password open the file directly from the browser extension, similarly to what I suggested above for the standalone program?

@jtarvainen: Ah, thank you. That makes perfect sense. I hope you don't mind, but I've split this off into a new discussion so we can focus on your requests. :)

So, I think it's important to state upfront that caching the file locally to make sewing easier is not, in and of itself, more secure. The devil's in the details. Apart from the fact that 1Password 6 is still relatively new, that's a big reason we don't have all of the features we want yet: coding them takes time, and doing so in a secure fashion takes even longer. It is crucial that we take the necessary time with sensitive data like Documents both for security and integrity, so that none of us gets hit with a nasty bug.

That said, we're incomplete agreement here. We'd really to have the ability to more easily view Documents (this is easy with images, but other file types not so much) ourselves, both with from the main app and 1Password mini. I've shared your request for this with the team and, while I can't promise a time frame, or that we'll be able to do it the same way that we can on macOS, it's on our wishlist as well. Thanks for your feedback on this! :)

Likewise, it's great to hear from you! We just want to make sure that anything we do in this area maintains security (and not just an illusion of it)...and we also want to ensure that people aren't opening Documents and trying to edit them, and then losing changes because they were cached temporarily.

And while there isn't a dedicated "Documents" section in 1Password mini at this time, you can still search for them there. Cheers! :)
