Based on what I can tell...

    1. We must have the browser plugin and the application on the same version (version 6.x right now)
    2. If we want to use the dropbox vault on Windows, we must use version 4.
    3. 4 and 6 are not compatible with the browser integration.
    4. I actually installed 6 and attempted to setup with dropbox, but I cannot even open the application up without logging into 1password.com. I should be able to access my local vault without any access online. That's sort of the whole point of why I purchased 1Password years ago.

I purchased 1Password for windows to integrate with my mac setup, and given the above, I feel a bit betrayed by Agile Bits. Forgive me, but I have no desire to give 1password any of my credential information. And now I'm contemplating an entirely different solution.

@brian_bruggeman: I hope you don't mind, but since your comments don't seem to be at all related to the thread about enabling Native Messaging for Firefox, I've split you off into a separate discussion.

No. The browser extensions are currently at version 4.6.12, and that applies whether you're using 1Password 4, 1Password 6, or 1Password for Mac: https://agilebits.com/onepassword/extensions

If we want to use the dropbox vault on Windows, we must use version 4.

    Correct.

4 and 6 are not compatible with the browser integration.

    No. Please see above.

Yep. You can continue using the version you purchased with your existing vaults. I've resent your license information via email in case you need it. Just follow the instructions there to install and register the app.

I'm sorry to hear that. To be clear, we feel the same way, and I'm pretty sure that all 1Password users do as well. That's why 1Password works like this:

    1. Your 1Password data is encrypted locally on your device before it is transmitted.
    2. Only an encrypted blob is stored and/or transmitted.
    3. Your Master Password is never transmitted.

You might think I'm talking about 1Password.com specifically there, but that's the case no matter what 1Password setup you use — the only difference being that 1Password.com data is also encrypted using the 128-bit randomly generated Secret Key, which is also never transmitted to us. So there's an additional layer of security there as well.

Indeed, when you use 1Password, AgileBits never has access to your data, regardless of the setup you choose. Even with 1Password.com, your data is encrypted on your device, so all the server ever ends up with is an encrypted blob. And since the Secret Key is created locally, your Master Password is only known by you, and neither is ever transmitted to us, only you have the means to decrypt the data.

Suffice to say, if someone gains access to our servers and dumps the full database (we've designed 1Password.com with this in mind), they simply don't have what they need to decrypt it, as each individual user alone has the keys to their data. So an attacker won't have that and can't get it from AgileBits, even if they get everything else. So while there's a lot more that goes into making all of this work smoothly, this is something that I think all of us can appreciate.

There's also a lot more detail in our security white paper if you're interested. I hope this helps. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions! :)

I must not have been very clear...

The browser integration appears to be non-functional on Windows with version 4 of 1password. I don't have an issue with Mac.

At this point, that's the non-starter for me. And the part that's most frustrating is I cannot download a version of the browser integration that actually allows me to work with version 4 of 1password. I would be happy to stay on version 4, but I cannot.

I don't want the data available at all on an agile bits server, and I specifically purchased a standalone copy of 1password because I didn't want a service.

@brian_bruggeman - coming in a bit late to this party, as brenty is not in yet, but reading through your exchange, I think he thought you were stating that neither 1Password 4 for Windows nor 1Password 6 for Windows were compatible with the current browser extension. This is not the case (which is why he said so).

If you're actually having troubles getting the browser extension to work with either version 4 or 6, that's a different matter, one we should be able to address, since it's certainly designed to work in both cases. Can I ask: what browser are you using on your PC, and if you visit the Extensions page, what version does it say you have installed?

@Lars Version 4 no longer appears to be functional on my Windows box as a browser extension. The standalone 1Password app (both 4 and 6) works fine outside of the browser.

On my Windows 8.1 box, I have installed version 4.6.2.626 of 1Password for Windows. I'm attempting to use the browser integration with Firefox Quantum 57.0.2 (64-bit). I am using 1Password: Password Manager and Secure Wallet 4.6.12.90 for a browser extension.

The only successful combination of browser extension and 1Password application that I've seen is with the above browser extension with 1Password 6 on Windows. One of the comments from @brenty in a different thread (sorry I don't have a link) lead me to believe that version 4 for Windows is no longer supported within the browser extension.

    My current state is:
    1. Removed all 1Password browser extension and apps
    2. Installed version 4 (see above) 1 password for Windows
    3. Installed version 4 (see above) 1 password browser extension for Firefox

The behavior I'm seeing is a grey 1Password icon in Firefox. When I install the latest version of 1Password for Windows, the icon becomes active and accessible (but nothing is populated, -- as expected -- based on the conversation above).

  • @brian_bruggeman: You have all of the right versions of everything, but I think installing 1Password 6 probably disabled a setting that is needed for the extension to function properly. In order to allow folks to use both apps when needed, there's a setting in each to effectively pass the extension between the two. This should be automatically enabled for each app when you first install it, so installing 1Password 6 could certainly steal the extension from 1Password 4. Ensuring this is enabled is a good first step here. In the main 1Password 4 app, choose Help > Advanced and make sure Use Native Messaging protocol is checked. If not, select that option to check it, restart Firefox, and let us know if that gets the extension activated. :chuffed:
