6.8.488 is a step backwards in terms of UI consistency (We will be improving this)
I just updated 1Password to 6.8.488 and it looks like the whole UI took a step backwards. It's clunky and no longer looks like a native application. It looks, and functions, like it was entirely rebuilt using some cross-platform UI toolkit that does a bad job mimicking the native UI.
- The title bar is no longer using my OS specified color, it's now forced blue.
- The title bar doesn't change colors when the window is no longer in focus.
- There's now a menu IN the title bar. I really dislike this.
The main and context menus are no longer native.
- They no longer using my OS colors.
- They lack the drop shadow.
- I'm pretty sure the font size is smaller than I've set on my OS, or the tons of padding in the menus is giving it that effect.
Resizing/minimize/maximizing the window is clunky.
- Windows no longer smoothly transition/animate, they just jump.
- When maximizing, the entire screen goes blurry before the app window expands to fill it.
- No animation when minimizing.
- Resizing the window quickly also causes a blurring effect where the window will eventually be, since it lags badly redrawing its contents.
No drop shadow on window.
- Resize grip in lower-right corner is overlapping scrollbar down arrow, making it unusable.
- PLEASE add a theme editor to your program. You've got 3 shades of blue going on and none of them harmonize at all (sidebar, titlebar, selection background). I want to set my own colors so I can get rid of the dark interface.
How can I install the previous version?
Thanks

@slittle: Sorry to hear you don't like it. I'm not sure I agree with "step backwards", as your feedback sounds pretty subjective, but perhaps a "step sideways" with regard to your personal preferences. ;)

This is probably not something we're going to remove, but it's something we'll consider.

All of the menus are native. We're using .Net Framework for everything.

You can change the font size with
Ctrl +
,Ctrl -
, andCtrl 0
.Windows no longer smoothly transition/animate, they just jump.
When maximizing, the entire screen goes blurry before the app window expands to fill it.I'm not seeing any "jumping" or anything "blurry". Do you have a video of this?
Resize grip in lower-right corner is overlapping scrollbar down arrow, making it unusable.
I'm not having any trouble resizing with or without scrollbar present. Have you tried it, or are you just seeing the "grip" covered by the scrollbar?

I'm not sure we'll be doing anything like that, but thank you for letting us know you'd like such a feature.
Since your comments focus exclusively on visuals, I'd love to hear if you have anything similar with regard to all of the other changes in 6.8 — features, improvements, etc.
Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. We'll absolutely take this into consideration as we develop future versions. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the new version! :)

The UI used to look and operate smoothly, now it doesn't.

While native APIs may be being used, the styling has been overridden and they don't look native.

This doesn't change the menu font size.
Windows no longer smoothly transition/animate, they just jump.
By jumping, I mean there's no animation. Instead of smoothly transitioning size, the app window just instantly changes to its min/maximized or restored size.
1Password's behavior:
Normal Windows app behavior:
When maximizing, the entire screen goes blurry before the app window expands to fill it.
I'm not seeing any "jumping" or anything "blurry". Do you have a video of this?
Yes, I made some recordings of this effect. This is the only app that does this, none of the built-in Windows apps which use Fluent Design do this, they resize and animate very fluidly and the blur stays within the window frame.

While I can resize the window fine, the down arrow isn't clickable.

Visuals and usability are very important, especially in a GUI app I have to use multiple times throughout the day. I'm not an Apple person (at all, I find how the company operates and treats their customers very distasteful), but I've always appreciated how much effort they (used to) go to to make sure everything in the GUI looked and worked smoothly.
As far as the other improvements, I scanned the changelog, seemed most were GUI tweaks. {OPW-1255} is a nicer, more intuitive option for editing and {OPW-748} is great for Edge.
Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback. We'll absolutely take this into consideration as we develop future versions. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the new version! :)
I'm looking forward to future updates.
In the meantime, how can I rollback to 6.7.457?

@slittle: It's pretty dang smooth for me, even on my relatively weak Surface Pro 4. But we'll keep working to improve performance where we can.

Gotcha. The new design is very intentional, as we have to support multiple versions of Windows with very different look and feel. So we're going for internal consistency, since what seems "native" to you on Windows 10 will seem out of place and often cannot actually be done "natively" on older versions of Windows. Nevertheless, we'll keep iterating on the design, which has changed substantially already since version 6 was first born. Thank you for you honest feedback on this! :chuffed:

Ah, yep. I didn't say it did. You only mentioned text size. Sorry for the confusion there! ;)
By jumping, I mean there's no animation. Instead of smoothly transitioning size, the app window just instantly changes to its min/maximized or restored size.
Ah, I see. Oddly enough, most of the feedback we get in regard to animation is that 1Password users often want less of it, so it's good to hear that you actually want more. It's something we'll consider as we continue to work on the design, especially if others feel the same way.

Thank you! That's very helpful. I guess your eyes are better than mine, as I never noticed the blur before seeing the slow-motion version you posted. We'll see if we can make it more responsive.
While I can resize the window fine, the down arrow isn't clickable.
Aha, thank you for clarifying. I thought you meant the opposite: that you could not resize. I'll bring that up with the team.

That's an excellent point. For the most part, while the visuals may not be to your specific taste, I think that 6.8 is a huge improvement with regard to design in the "how it works" sense...but we definitely want to address bugs like the one you mentioned above.
As far as the other improvements, I scanned the changelog, seemed most were GUI tweaks. {OPW-1255} is a nicer, more intuitive option for editing and {OPW-748} is great for Edge.
There were some pretty significant UI changes over the past few months, but most of the work was under the hood (particularly with search, saving, and filling), much of it to lay the groundwork for upcoming features/improvements like Security Audit and Documents which weren't quite ready for 6.8.
I'm looking forward to future updates.
Likewise, thank you! :chuffed:

While that isn't supported, almost all versions are available from our update site:

Cheers! :)

I unfortunately must confirm all the issues. The UI is very slow and does not behave like native. The previous version was a lot better. Another thing that is broken is that it's no longer possible to drag & draw the window when in fullscreen (edit: it seems to work when starting the drag from middle of the title bar, but not when starting the drag from the top of the title bar). This normally works for all windows apps.
Edit: It's also not possible the resize the window from top right corner.

@jantvrdik: I haven't seen any performance decreases, even on my Surface running an m4. 1Password 6 is still way faster than 1Password 4. Can you tell me what hardware you're using, and is there an objective difference I could try to reproduce?

This is a known issue. clicking further down to drag works, as you noted, but we'll be improving this.
Edit: It's also not possible the resize the window from top right corner.
Thanks for mentioning that! I've never tried to resize a Windows app from the close button as I'd always be afraid to accidentally quit it, so I hadn't noticed!

I can confirm the delayed screen draws. When maximizing the app you can see what you have on the screen blur before the app comes up. Been trying to ignore it but thought I would mention it. There are a number of various artifacts like this with the new version. Seems like whatever function you used to do the transparency effect is not working very well. I have a Surface Pro 2017 (i7) so my machine is definitely not slow. :)

Hi guys,
@cartman, thanks for reporting this.
We will be improving this in each update, this is the result of us switching to a new UI system that includes multiple major UI changes like the custom titlebar, sidebar changes, context menu changes, and more to support future changes. We're now in the stage of development where we have to add custom code to provide more than what the default methods have and there are many UI optimizations we can do and it will get better.
We also have missing shadows on the window itself that will be added soon, we'll fix the issue with the titlebar not showing a different color when defocused, and we have fixed the issue with the resizing from the titlebar when maximizing. We are looking at other issues mentioned here.
Please keep reporting these issues. As Brenty mentioned, we didn't notice some of these issues as they're not something we normally do and we were surprised some of the expected default features wasn't actually enabled (like the system animations and the missing titlebar defocused color), so we have to manually adjust them.
