Running standalone and subscription versions simultaneously

I currently use the standalone version of 1Password and sync via Dropbox. I would like to sign up for the 30 day trial of the subscription version to try it out, but have concerns about the two versions colliding.

On my Windows machines, will I have to have two different chrome extensions installed, one for each version?

On my iOS devices, will I have to have two separate apps installed?

Thanks

  • Hi @Timmer,

    Thanks for writing in.

You do not need to install a different extension for your browsers, we use the same 1Password extensions for 1Password 4-6 for Windows (and macOS). The 1Password extension doesn't have any data or UI, it works to fill and save your data by connecting to the running 1Password program on the PC.

If you install 1Password 6 without uninstalling 1Password 4, you'd need to manually turn on Native Messaging support within 1Password 6 to let the extension connect to it. This guide will help with switching between 1Password 4 and 6 on Windows, note the guide is slightly outdated for 1Password 6.8, it's now the 1Password menu > Settings > Advanced.

On my iOS devices, will I have to have two separate apps installed?

No, 1Password 6 for Windows is the only 1Password app that doesn't support both standalone vaults and 1Password.com subscriptions at the same time. We're working on 1Password 7 now that'll do just that.

This guide will help with migrating your Dropbox vault to your 1Password account: https://support.1password.com/migrate-1password-account/#migrate-your-data-on-your-main-device
