Using 1Password standalone (sans-subscription membership)

I bought 1password about 4 years ago before you started the Ransomware Subscription program. I downloaded the Windows version, which I have a standalone license number. I can't get it to setup. It keeps asking for the ransomware account information. I don't have an account. I don't want to go under the Ransomware Subscription program. I want to continue to use the standalone. I am trying very hard to get away from the companies like Microsoft, Adobe and other who now decide it is to their advantage to hold us ransom for money each month to use the software. I am glad you are allowing those of us who purchased before the Ransomware practice came into to continue to use what we bought even though getting more difficult. Any help appreciated.

  • Hi @macmikeal,

1Password 6 for Windows requires a subscription membership. If you have a license for 1Password 4 for Windows then that is the version you’d need to download. You can find it here:

    https://1password.com/downloads/

Click the “Get 1Password 4 (standalone version)” link.

    Thanks.

P.S. I don’t feel it is fair to call 1Password membership “ransomware.” We’re very up front about the service that we’re offering and what the price of that service is. We also never prevent anyone from accessing their data if they opt not to or can’t pay. Data will instead enter a read-only “frozen” mode, but it is still accessible and can be viewed. By the definition you’re using any non-free software that offers a trial period or similar could be called “ransomware.”

You’ll need to copy your vault from wherever it currently exists to the new PC in order to open it with 1Password there. Without a 1Password membership your data is by default stored only on your own devices (we don’t store it for you). That is, in part, what 1Password.com subscription membership gives you — data storage with us. We charge a recurring cost for that service because it comes at a recurring cost to us.

Please understand that calling our products / services “ransomware” is quite unkind (and as pointed about above, inaccurate). Whether you agree with our business model or not is your prerogative, but name calling here on our support forum is uncalled for.

There are plenty of options out there for password management. We’d certainly hope that everyone would find 1Password to be the best one, and feel that the price we’re asking is commensurate with the value we offer. But of course not everyone is going to feel that way. We want people to be happy, and as such we’d encourage anyone looking for password management to try a few different solutions.

    Thanks.

    Ben

  • You’ll need to install and log in to Dropbox on the new computer so that it syncs your 1Password file to that computer, then. Once that is done you’d select the ‘I have used 1Password before’ option and navigate to your Dropbox folder, selecting the 1Password.agilekeychain or 1Password.opvault file contained within.

On behalf of Ben you are very welcome @macmikeal! You should be all set with 1Password 4 after that, but please let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you!

    Cheers,
    Greg

I've been using 1Password since day 1, before it had a version number attached, before the App Store and certainly before it became rent only. I get that folks are always looking for ways to expand, usually passing that along to customers. I wish more companies would work on new products or focus on maintaining good ones, charging for updates as needed. I get that products must be replaced and purchased again when they wear out but even with autos you have lease OR purchase options. It's well known that renting anything is not good financial sense. As they say, "the rich get richer and the poor, rent." For folks who don't mind paying for something they'll never own, I recommend 1Password highly. The software is great and customer service is top notch. I would gladly BUY the software again but paying monthly for something I will never own will never be ok, for me. Sadly I will look for other password software. I'm sorry it no longer works for me but things change. Good luck agile bits. I am sincere when I say it's been great.

  • Hi @cinthia,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure if you're aware but we have released 1Password 7 for Windows that supports both standalone licenses and 1Password memberships, it does now have "purchase" and "lease" concepts as you used.
