1Password for Safari does not work with standalone vaults [iOS Password AutoFill is available]
AgileBits Update: You can read the official answer from 1Password founder Dave Teare using the button below.
I can't use a standalone vault anymore with Safari in the new iOS app version 7.8
After updating the iOS app, the previous Safari share sheet button is no longer there. There is only the new iOS 15 Safari extension and when I try to set it up it says standalone vaults are not supported. I would be ok with that if the old option in the share sheet was still there, but it has been removed. So pretty much anyone with a standalone vault can no longer use Safari integration anymore.
For now I have downgraded to the previous iOS version in TestFlight.
Unless I am missing some new setting to bring it back?
I'm totally disappointed you're breaking this feature for existing standalone vault users unless we pay for a monthly subscription.
Between the upcoming 1Password 8 Mac app and breaking existing functionality in the current iOS app, I am not sure if 1Password is right for me in the future. I was considering a subscription before the 1Password 8 news, but that and the fact that a current version of the app that previously supported standalone accounts no longer does, doesn't sit right with me.
Please restore the old Safari share sheet extension that works with standalone vaults.

@volcom45 The founder admitted he made a mistake. He wrote a really nice multi-paragraph response admitting he could maybe have done things better. What more do you want from the poor guy? You can’t possibly expect him to fix the mistake, too?

@"Aaron Pinsker" @brank Funny, their staff was surely enjoying the new extension support all summer long while iOS was in beta. They demo'd it working in action the very night the first iOS 15 betas were released. They make it sound like it was SO much work and there was no time to look into standalone vaults. The founder, dteare has been the epitome of a coward in this whole thing. Keeps saying how sorry he is and how he wishes he had a mulligan for some of his mistakes but is unwilling to fix things for all of us. I hope you all continue to crush the 1 star reviews and make them feel the pain of their actions.. I simply won't tolerate this nonsense.. I could give 2 sh*ts if Dave hadn't used the share sheet in ages.. he's been also enjoying the browser extensions beta for quite some time!

@"Aaron Pinsker" Is it really a violation of apples TOS is AB removes a feature none of their staff even used?

Good luck, @"Aaron Pinsker". 1Password is the "App of the Day" on the App Store today. Apple has never been afraid of breaking things in order to make way for forward progress. See for example the removal of the headphone jack. "Courage." AB has historically been on top of adding new Apple features on day one. Highly doubt Apple care about the death of the share sheet especially in light of AB adopting their newest tech: Safari web extensions.

@"Aaron Pinsker" Please share how you are doing this. The links I got from @AppleSupport on twitter don't work because I can't select the app because it was purchased several time ago. Thanks

I'm currently looking into reporting 1Password as violating the App Store rules by removing a feature users paid for without prior notice. I honestly have no idea if I'll get anywhere with this, or if removing a feature in the way AB did actually violates any rules, but at this point I'm willing to try anything to hold AB accountable.

Why can't I use the in-app Volt?
There is no choice but to disable the 1P extension of Safari. - Former Member
I myself got fed up with 1P moving everything to subscriptions and their hosted vaults years ago. Had not found a valid alternative until a few months ago with Enpass. Enpass has a local vault storage, and unlike 1P, they allow to sync with Box.com, icloud, dropbox, google/microsoft drives and several more. It was able to import my almost 3,000 1P logins without issues. The only feature I miss is the ability to scan the OTP QR codes with the desktop version like 1P does, but their mobile app scans them without problem.
For all of you who don't like subscriptions Enpass has a one-time purchase that allows to use the app on all devices/platforms.
Why did I come back to these forums if I don't use 1P anymore...? Cuz I was so upset in their betraying loyal customers (I had been using 1P since 2012) that I wanted payback by letting as many people as possible to know about valid alternatives.

@Olivaw I took the same path. Tried bitwarden free online and later found out about self hosting. I asked some question on their forum and got lot of support. Just to be clear there is an error on bitwarden's pricing page. You are able to self host with the free version too but you will only get option available on the free tier hosted by bitwarden. I've gone with the premium subscription too because I needed TOTP support and honestly think that $10/year is a reasonable price.

So I’ve looked into these alternatives:
iCloud Keychain I really want to use it (they’ve even introduced TOTP for iOS 15 and it’s coming in macOS Monterey), but lack of support on macOS for browsers other than Safari and lack of support for multiple urls for an account is a big minus for me. Apple’s clearly putting effort into making it better, but it’s not far enough along for me; maybe next year.
KeePassXC I really like this. It’s free and open source and pretty flexible. I’d probably go with Strongbox premium for the iOS app. Minuses are that it doesn’t have an extension for Safari on macOS and I’m not really keen on syncing being the whole database file. (I’m aware of KeeShare, but unfortunately that’s not supported by Strongbox).
BitWarden This looks to be the closest of the three to 1Password in functionality and browser support. The free version requires hosting with them, but the 1 user premium sub is a very reasonable $10 per year and includes the ability to self host. In principle I prefer self host, but BitWarden actually gives a fantastic reason for hosting with them in the form of emergency access, which really sounds a pretty fantastic and secure implementation.
From this, I decided to give BitWarden a try and so far it’s looking good after a day of play. Assuming I continue to like it after a week, I’ll also migrate my husband over to his own $10 per year licence, too. I’d have gone with KeePassXC if it had a browser extension for Safari on macOS, but at the charity where I work, I’m actually going to recommend we pilot KeePassXC.
If 1password decision makers are reading this, you could take a cue from BitWarden on reasonable pricing for a sub model and the importance of continuing to support self-hosting, while at the same time providing a reasonable justification to host it with you that leaves the final decision ultimately with the customer.
