Auto-fill frequently stops working (macOS, Safari)

Issue: The auto-fill feature in Safari frequently becomes non-responsive. This causes frustration because a first order feature for a password manager has an obvious bug. This results in me wanting to look for alternatives to 1Password.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a login page that under expected circumstances should auto-fill.
  2. Select username field. Unlock 1Password if necessary.
  3. Display contextual 1Password dropdown within user field.
  4. With cursor, select desired item from menu.
  5. No response. When selected the item does not populate the field.

Expected result: Selecting an item in the 1Password menu should populate the credential fields.

Workarounds: (both of these are unacceptable)

  1. Roundtrip manually copy/paste out of native 1Password app.
  2. Quitting and reopening Safari.

Config:

  • 1Password for Mac 8.10.64 (81064007)
  • Version 18.3 (20620.2.4.11.5)
  • macOS 15.3.1 (24D70)
  • 2018 Mac Mini

It sounds like you may have been in the middle of an update. We recently released a new version of 1Password. Can you try the following and let me know how it goes the next time you experience it? It should help and not require you to restart the Mac.

During an update, the communication between the browser extensions and the app is severed by macOS. The following steps will restart that connection. This would be the only way to reestablish the communication.

     1. Look for our helper in the menu bar near the WiFi indicator and the clock. Right-click (Option-click) on the helper and select quit 1Password completely.
     2. Quit your browser.
     3. Wait a few seconds and then open 1Password from the Dock or the Applications folder and unlock
     4. Open your browser.
