Chrome & 1Password not playing nice

I was forced to replace my primary computer last week. The new computer is a Lenovo, similar to the previous one. It runs Windows 11 Pro. I used both Edge and Chrome. I downloaded both web browsers. Signed in to my accounts.

I could sign into the 1Password extension on Edge but not on Chrome. At this point, I removed the Chrome extension and installed it again to ensure I was using the latest version.
When I select the Chrome extension icon, a new browser page opens with "Start setup." I have the option to create a new 1Password account or click the blue Sign In button.

I select the Sign In button, type in my 1Password email address, and select continue. The next screen has three fields: email, Secret Key, and Password. I typed in all the information. I have the secret key revealed on Edge in large type, so I don't mistype a character. I type in the password and select the blue Sign In button. I get an error message "Invalid Secret Key.

I would appreciate any feedback on how to fix this issue. It is slowing down my workflow at a critical time, as tax filing deadlines are approaching.

Thank you.

  • Since you have the secret key and other data available to copy and paste into the Chrome 1Password extension, doing so will avoid the possibility of typographical error.

To allay the concerns of the paranoid and/or your customers, you might link to the extension in the Web Store which you installed. There are at least three legitimate 1Password extensions from AgileBits Inc.

I appreciate you taking the time to help resolve my issue. I removed the extension I previously downloaded from the Web Store and downloaded the 1Password Beta extension. The Beta extension works. Thank you!

While I am happy to hear that you have a working extension and can get back to work, this leaves a significant question outstanding. If you had the legitimate stable 1Password extension installed, then why was it not working, else what are the consequences of the illegitimate extension you had installed (even if only briefly)?

Of course I don't mean to imply that you owe me or anyone else answers, just that you should know the them. For what it's worth, I use the Beta extension in Chrome and (occasionally) Firefox. Contrary to expectations of beta software, it seems to work right almost all the time.
