Regarding search, we changed things up to avoid substring matches to reduce the noise in the results. For your vpn search example, you can use the straight up filter approach instead with ⌥⌘F. That will filter the existing item list and will find your openvpn item. I'd like to see us surface these types of options directly into the search field itself, something like the "pills" that you see in Apple Mail.
Regarding shortcuts sometimes not working, which ones have been inconsistent for you? I haven't experienced this myself but would be happy to investigate.
