Save new logins

Options

I'm on the most up-to-date version of the Beta nightly build but I'm still having challenges where 1Password won't offer to save new logins. There used to be a setting in Preferences->Browser that would allow me to toggle this but the Beta preference pane doesn't have a Save new Login option. How to I get this behavior back?

1Password Version: 8.5.0 80500031
Extension Version: 2.1.4
OS Version: macOS 11.6.1

Hi @jwessler, sorry to hear about the trouble you've encountered here, and for the delay in our response. Many of us were away on holiday break (we operate at a pretty quick tempo around here, making the rest all the more needed), but we're now back and happy to assist.

There used to be a setting in Preferences->Browser that would allow me to toggle this but the Beta preference pane doesn't have a Save new Login option.

You're correct - we've moved these settings into the 1Password browser extension in an effort to place settings where they can be most useful and relevant (browser-related options in the browser app, desktop-related ones in 1Password for Mac desktop app).

Let's do a couple quick checks of your settings, to start:

    1. First, open 1Password in your browser (that is, the little 1Password icon in your browser's toolbar)
    2. Click the gear icon, then Settings.
    3. Scroll down to the General section. Is the Integrate with the 1Password app option enabled?
    4. Lastly, scroll a bit further down to the Autofill section. Is the Offer to fill and save passwords option enabled?

I'll be interested to learn what you find. If this needs some further troubleshooting, I'll also be happy to connect you with our Mac specialists who should be able to expedite a solution for you. And I hope this is a helpful start! Thanks again ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Peter - thanks for your reply. Completely understand about the holiday break. I don't get a lot of those so I forget that others might have it better!!

Both the "integrate with 1Password app" and "Offer to fill and save passwords" are enabled in the Browser app's settings.

    Thanks for your help.

Just wanted to add the following - I edited an entry in 1Password to remove the website and changed the name of the entry so it didn't match the website. I then tried to log in and 1Password did not offer to save the login. I'm not sure how else to test the system.

What steps would you advise? Do I need to create a new account at a brand new website to test the Save Login feature or did the above steps test it well enough?

Hey @jwessler - thanks for the reply!

These settings are what we'd expect (if things were working properly, that is), so it does sound like there might be a technical issue you're running into.

For the most part, saving a new login into 1Password should be a really simple process, which is partly what makes me think that something's not right here.

Here's a sample test you can try:

    1. First, make sure your 1Password app is unlocked ๐Ÿ—
    2. Go to an arbitrary reputable website, and go to their sign-in page if they have one (how about Github.com?)
    3. Type in a test username, like jwessler-test. Do not press Enter.
    4. Click on the password field and type in any set of characters (again, we're not creating a real login, in this case.)

At this point, an inline menu should appear that says Save in 1Password. This is generated by the 1Password browser extension, and if things are working correctly, you should be able to click Save in 1Password, which brings up a confirmation menu verifying the details, and then click Save again to finalize it.

Alternately, if you're creating a login for the first time on a sign-up page, you should be able to put in the username, and then when you select the password field, 1Password should offer a strong password it has auto-generated for you.

If these things aren't happening, it means that something may not be working right, and we'll certainly want to assist you with that.

And to that end, you can reach our specialists who help with this kind of issue by sending an email to support+extensions@1Password.com. If you include a link to this discussion, they'll have a great initial source of information and you won't have to start the discussion from scratch, too. ๐Ÿ‘

I hope this is helpful in clarifying what you should be able to expect from the app, and if you are seeing an issue we'll be happy to expedite the resolution of that for you. Best regards from our team! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@PeterG_1P Thanks for that walk through. It is extremely helpful. My system is performing exactly as you described. Nothing is broken. I just did not understand the new workflow with the Beta version of the app.

I had to go to theverge.com because Github.com checks to ensure your login e-mail is valid before it lets you continue signing up!! Once I entered a username and typed in a password, 1Password showed the "save in 1Password" button just like you said.

Thanks for walking me through those steps. I appreciate your patience!!

    Have a great week.
