@peteb I'm really sorry to hear that you're struggling to unlock 1Password. Let me see if I can help.
First of all, could you confirm that you have an active 1Password subscription? 1Password 8 is only available via a subscription, so any local vaults you might've had in 1Password 7 need to be transferred manually before they can be accessed.
Next, could you try the following steps and see if they make a difference?
- If you recently changed your account's password, can you try entering your old password once to see if that works? If it ends up working, your account should begin unlocking using the new password from then on.
- If that doesn't work, we can try resetting your application (this will not delete any of your 1Password data):
- Fully quit 1Password. You can do this by clicking on the 1Password icon in the top right side of your menu bar, and pressing
Quit
. Just closing the 1Password window or selectingQuit
in the1Password
menu will only hide the app; - Open Finder, then in the top menu click
Go
>Go to Folder...
; - In the window that shows up, enter the following, then press Enter:
~/Library/Group Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.1password/Library/Application Support/1Password/Data
; - You should see the
Data
folder. Rename it toData Old
or something similar; - Restart 1Password. You should be asked to sign in;
- Sign in using your account details, then see if it begins working once again.
- Fully quit 1Password. You can do this by clicking on the 1Password icon in the top right side of your menu bar, and pressing
I really hope this helps. For more personalized help I recommend that you reach out to support@1password.com. They'll be able to diagnose potential issues related to your account specifically.

Thank you for the help, Could not get into V8 Mac password to force it to quit.
1Password is the heart of everything I do to reach any of my security sites and I can not function without it.
I have deleted V8 MAC and went back to using V7 MAC , thankfully that still works.
Would hope that Dave and his crew will find a much better way to upgrade to v8, prefer to upgrade
via internally on v7 MAC.0 -
I suspect you might have had a standalone vault in 7. In 1Password 7 it could unlock with a different password than what you might use for 1Password.com. In 1Password 8 you'll unlock with the password you use to access 1Password.com. We'd like to help you get things going. Please email us using

I used the same Master password anytime I opened 1password. Yes there are two Vaults one private and another primary under
iCloud. Used the private when my wife and I were on the family plan - would like to eliminate one of them as she is no longer in the plan.
I am back to V7 MAC as 1password is the heart of my system and I would up the creek without it.0 -
The way 1Password unlocks with
1Password 7
is:If a Primary vault exists, then it unlocks using the Password for that vault, regardless of what, if any, memberships are signed in.
If a single 1Password membership is signed in, then it unlocks using the Password for that membership account
If multiple memberships are signed in, then it unlocks using the Password of the first added membership
These are each exclusive scenarios. For example, if multiple memberships are signed in, you cannot unlock 1Password using the Password of the second account that was added.
1Password 8
would only use the password for 1Password.com to unlock as standalone vaults are not supported. My suggestion would to be to get all of your data in the Private vault and then remove the primary. Though it reality it would be mush easier. I envision something like this.
- 1Password 7: Move all of your data to the membership vault. Move and copy items
- Optional change the password on 1Password.com to something easier for you to use.
- Install 1Password 8 and link your account. You'll use the same password you use to access 1Password.com.
