Missing features in 1P8 (that 1P7 had)

I consider myself a power user and so have found 1P8 to remove a number of things that I relied upon to make my experience of 1P efficient.
Here are some things I've noticed with the standalone app:

  • Can't update icon with paste. Previously I could copy an image to clipboard, edit an entry, select the icon and paste. Now I need to Choose new icon....

  • Can't drag and drop a file to an entry. I now have to select add more -> Attach a File.

  • Missing Keyboard Shortcuts for Command 0 - All Vaults, Command 1 - Next Vault etc. I understand that Command 0 now resets zoom which aligns with other macOS apps but another keyboard shortcut would be nice.

  • When generating a password, I can't select it and copy it until I press Use. In 1P7 I could copy directly from the generation box. Sometimes I just want to use 1P for generation, not for saving an entry.

  • This final one is very strange, I hadn't experienced this until I upgrade to 1P8 but sometimes copying username/password/textfield with keyboard shortcut doesn't work. The system registers the copy (the Edit menu bar item highlights) but when I go to paste else where, it pastes the previous clipboard item. I'm curious to know if this has been reported by anyone else?

  • Hey @daskdjaskdjsad:

Thanks for your detailed feedback here!

We're continuing to evaluate ways for changing an item's icon, so I'll share your feedback about being able to use the Clipboard to configure an item's icon.

I've added your thoughts about dragging files to attach them.

The shortcuts ⌘+1 to ⌘+9 now control which collection is selected, starting with ⌘+1 as All Accounts.

I'll share your thoughts about wanting a standalone password generator back as well.

As for what you're running into with copying, we're investigating that and hope to know more soon.

I don't know if we're talking about the same thing, but I'm also running into issues where copy/paste shortcuts tend to just not work while editing items. I noticed this most often when I'm trying to change the order of fields in an item (since there's no longer an option to rearrange rows that I can find). More often than not, it seems like the value doesn't actually copy and it just pastes whatever was in my clipboard before.

  • @rpendleton

Copying while editing is one we are looking into for sure. Rearranging rows is not present at this time. This one is something I hope to see come back to 8.

I second the frustration with copy/paste - most recently I was trying to copy the title of a field and could not copy NOR paste. That along with re-ordering fields and changing field types are critical features that should have been included in the first 1P8 release. Please bring them back ASAP.

Actually, while on the topic, the whole requirement that fields have types that need to be specified at all is exceedingly frustrating. Most often I just want to enter some data (text), and if later I think it should be a password (or date or whatever), I could simply change the type. Moreover, the need to specify the field type on field creation is exceedingly cumbersome and requires excessive mouse interaction. Consider the usability of features that are not tied to the mouse for those of us who remain hands-on-keyboard as much as possible and for whom the mouse is actually more cumbersome (due to physical/mobility issues).

Please bring back the ability to paste icons. As much as I like the new UI (user interface), by removing features like the ease of pasting an icon, you downgrade the UX (user experience).

  • Hi @iHuman:

Thanks for your feedback! I've added your thoughts on being able to paste an icon to the issue we have tracking this. Thanks!

1Password 8 doesn't offer me to safe a login if I file a registration form. Why is something basic like this missing?
I also can't create a safe password directly in the Safari Browser.
In addition there's no password history feature in V8.

  • Hi @Daniel86:

Do you have 1Password for Safari installed? It's a separate download from 1Password 8 for Mac and you can get it here

Additionally, you can access the password history of an item by using the down arrow on the password, like so:

Let me know how you get on with that!

    Hello,
thanks for the hint with the password history! That works for me!

No I didn't install 1Password for Safari in Addition to 1Password 8 on my Mac.
I don't get why I should do that? Why can't you just make an app and a browser extension that works like in the past?

    @Daniel86

As technologies change and the app itself changes, it's a chance to look at past success and any challenges we faced and eliminate roadblocks if possible or consequently build upon any high points that we had. The outcome will hopefully be a better user experience all around.

    Wow, quiet a marketing phrase.
So what advantage exactly brings me the installation of the additional safari app?
And why can't you just simply give me the same functionality without an additional app I have to install?

  • You can use the app without 1Password for Safari, if you do so, you'll lose the browser integration. In such a situation you would need to copy and paste your data as you deem fit. The only really change here (relatively speaking) is how it's packaged. Previously, it was part of the app and now it is entirely separate.

For me, personally, I would install it as it helps prevent me from entering my details on a fraudulent site. The choice is yours. You are free to make 1Password 8 work to your desires. It excels when it works in unison with its companion 1Password in the browser (extension).

    • You only need to open 1Password in the browser once and configure it. From then on it resides in the Applications folder and you should not have to interact with it.

    Ok, I understand.
So the Safari App simply replaces the old Browser Plugin.
I'll give it a try, thank you!

  • @Daniel86

So the Safari App simply replaces the old Browser Plugin

Sort of. The Safari app delivers the new 1Password for Safari extension. It is a (necessary) mechanism for distributing Safari Web Extensions (see: Apple developer documentation). There are two primary advantages for us to use a Safari Web Extension:

    1. It allows 1Password users to use 1Password for Safari either with or without 1Password for Mac, and vice versa
    2. It enables us to deliver a nearly identical experience regardless of which browser the customer chooses to use

I hope that adds some clarity. Please do give it a try and let us know how it goes. 😃

    Ben
