Printing

With 1Password 8 we completed the move to membership only. Would printing out the Emergency Kit (with password) and including it with your papers fill the need?

I'd like to second a request to add the ability to print to 1Password 8. PLEASE!

Thank you for the feedback. There's no need to post the same comment in multiple threads. I've replied to you here: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/668326/#Comment_668326 🙂

I want to add my voice to the many many members who want you to put back the ability to print the data. It's a great case of developers using their judgment and not asking customers what they find useful. Time to take classes on customer surveys and talking to customers.

Hi @edpeters22 - I've added a vote on your behalf to the feature request that we currently have open for this.

Its been explained in great detail why the ability to print is so important,..... here and elsewhere....Why will you not listen?
My estate executor requires a printed copy of my passwords......1 -
I vote for the right to print. There are a variety of valid reasons to print hard copies of these passwords. I was surprised when it was taken away.

Dave, thanks for asking.
First, if I only have my passwords stored at 1Password, I am vulnerable to any problems or issues logging in to 1Password (as rare as they are, they can and have occurred). And, your terms of service specifically exempts the company from any liabilities associated with use (see “Disclaimer And Non-Waiver of Rights”) and explicitly states that “Your use of the Service is at your sole risk.” Meaning, your lawyers entertain the possibility that the service could go down, making our passwords inaccessible. So, I prefer a hard copy, printed, and securely stored as a back-up to loss of service. Second, there are several estate planning, “in the event of my death” issues that lawyers offer various advice for. And that includes having some back-ups of at least some of the passwords stored with various legal documents. (Some logins would best be implemented fairly quickly in such a situation.) Further, if someone other than me were having trouble accessing my 1Password using my emergency kit, or even a separate vault set-up just for those passwords, could they get help from AgileBits to access my vault? Would you be able to help them? Would you require a death certificate? I have to assume that the company would rather stay out of these situations? Also, if I were to initiate two-factor authentication, this would further complicate the issue. While I trust and value the perspective of the team there to NOT print (along the lines of why in the world would you want to??). There are reasons to do so, and it used to be possible and should be our choice as users. Even Nick on the 1Password blog entertains that there might be reasons people want a hard copy of passwords: "Alternatively, you can export your data. Or, if you don’t have a password manager, create a simple spreadsheet." I understand I can print individual passwords and I can (and have) exported and edited my lists for reasons I’ve mentioned, but it’s not a formatted list with the graphics of individual passwords the print option used to offer--it was just a nice, simple list to print and store in a safe. In summary, I’m not printing to have a list of my passwords for my used—I fully and only use the excellent 1Password features; I’m merely offering that individual users have reasons to print some or all of their passwords for contingencies and are willing to take the risk of keeping those safe (as, in a safe…where you advise keeping our emergency kits. To quote your advice on your site about storing the Emergency Kit, “The truth is there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.” I would argue that the same is true for whether or not we print our passwords. It seems odd to hold the position that you took away the option to print the full (formatted) list because you don’t think we should.1 -
Thank you for the detailed reply! Our product team relies on feedback like yours to help push 1Password forward and, while I can't promise anything, I've added your comments to the internal tracker that we use to help plan future features for 1Password. I'd just like to respond to a few points:
First, if I only have my passwords stored at 1Password, I am vulnerable to any problems or issues logging in to 1Password (as rare as they are, they can and have occurred).
There are a few different ways that 1Password protects you from being locked out from your data:
- If you lose one of your devices then you can still access your data on your other devices or on 1Password.com
- If you lose all of your devices then you can still access your data on 1Password.com
- If 1Password.com were to suddenly disappear tomorrow then your devices will still have an offline cached copy of your data.
Your encrypted data is also replicated to redundant copies on our end to guard against any data loss.
Further, if someone other than me were having trouble accessing my 1Password using my emergency kit, or even a separate vault set-up just for those passwords, could they get help from AgileBits to access my vault? Would you be able to help them? Would you require a death certificate? I have to assume that the company would rather stay out of these situations?
We have no ability to provide access to 1Password data, even if an original account holder asks us to let them in. We just don't have that capability since the account password is the key that transforms a user's encrypted data into a readable form. That's how we help preserve user security and privacy: only the user themselves can ever access their data. For the highest level of privacy, we designed our system so that we only ever have the encrypted gibberish and none of the data on our end is in its usable form. So even if the user themselves contacts us requesting access to their data because they've forgotten their account password we're unable to help, not because we don't want to help but because it's technically impossible for us to give anyone (including ourselves) access to a user's data.
If you print your Emergency Kit and write your account password down on the kit then you can give the kit to a trusted person so that they can access your 1Password account in an emergency.
Also, if I were to initiate two-factor authentication, this would further complicate the issue.
If you enable two-factor authentication for your 1Password account then you would need to store the two-factor authentication secret or QR code with your Emergency Kit and provide that to your trusted person as well if you'd like them to access your account in an emergency.
It seems odd to hold the position that you took away the option to print the full (formatted) list because you don’t think we should.
It may seem like semantics but I will note that the feature wasn't taken away. 1Password 8 is a completely new app that was written from scratch and some features haven't been added yet. As I said, I've passed along your feedback and request to the product team so that they can consider building a print feature for 1Password 8 in the future. 🙂

Dave--thanks so much for the thoughtful and detailed reply! It certainly addresses many of the points I raised. Obviously the issues are more personal and emotional about one's digital life--final comment is that I really, truly appreciate 1Password and all the work the team there puts into the product and customer engagement! Best, Timothy

I switched to 1Password recently from LastPass premium. I was a LastPass premium member for 9 years and one of the features I liked was the ability to print a hard copy of my user names and passwords. I won't go into a dissertation about why I think it's a good feature but I will say that I think it should be left up to the paying user whether they have the ability to print a hard copy of their data. I hope you make this feature available.

Another request for being able to print from MacOS. I manage my 93 year old mom's passwords - she is not able to run 1PW (level of computer skills) so she often relies on a paper copy when her Win11 box doesn't autofill.

Thank you for the feedback, I've passed it along to the team.
Have you considered installing 1Password in the browser (not the app) on your mom's PC so that 1Password fills your mom's logins right on the webpage: Get to know 1Password in your browser. She would just need to click on the suggestion below the username/password field which might be even easier than typing in a password from a printed list:

Thanks for the suggestion.
Right now, my mom is using Window 11’s native password manager to fill in web passwords. This works most of the time since she doesn’t have to do anything. If windows doesn’t autofill the fields, she will either type in the password from the printed list or have me remote into her computer to help her.
The 1PW desktop app is way too complicated for her. The browser extension might work and would probably be more secure, but she doesn’t like changes at her age.
Anyway, I keep track of those pws using a separate vault on my 1PW account and would love an easy way to print out a hardcopy.

I have just updated to version 8, and wanted to print a hardcopy of all my passwords and other items as I have done regularly since I started using 1Password almost ten years ago. This hardcopy is part of my emergency documents which are stored in a physical safe.
Why do - or did - I do this, when there are several secure ways to access this data even in loss of all my devices? I want to make sure that members of my family who get access to my safe in case I'm unable to act myself (disease, injury, ... death) will have a simple way to deal with my data.
I understand that this feature request - or last wish - has already been passed on to the product team, but I wanted to emphasize the importance this has to me, too. (And, truth be told, it's not a big deal technically.)
Thanks & best regards, daniel.

Thank you, I've passed along your feedback to our product team. 🙂
My recommendation is that you download and save your Emergency Kit. Print out the Emergency Kit and write down your account password. Then store the Emergency Kit in your safe. Using the Emergency Kit your family will be able to sign-in to your 1Password account and they'll have access to the latest version of your items.

Thank you, Dave. No worries, the 1Password Emergency Kit is part of my emergency files. daniel.

Very unfortunate that you "removed" printing. Yes "removed" because the app is presented as version 8, not version 1 for a new app.
I tag select items for Estate Planning purposes. I print those select items to a .PDF file which is included with other kinds of documents in a password protected .ZIP file for my executor. A .PDF file is platform/application/website independent, searchable, printable and absolutely "simple" for anyone familiar with a computer/tablet/smartphone -- the Emergency Kit is far from simple nor as independent as described above, and .1PUX is 1Password specific (no layperson would know what to do with it).
The bottom line: When I print an item, I am stepping out of the 1Password sandbox and absolving 1Password/AgileBits. I won't pretend to know AgileBits' motivation, but if "feels like" a defensive tort move.
This omission is a deal breaker for me. I have reverted to 1Password 7 and will prepare myself for another password manager. You have your target clients and evidently I am no longer one of them. . . .

@CliffGudgeon and @salv0! 👋
Thank you for sharing why a print feature in 1Password 8 would be useful for you. 1Password's security model depends on you only storing your items inside of 1Password, as soon as you store a copy of your items in a second location 1Password is no longer protecting your items and their security is dependent on how you secure that second copy of your items on your device or on a printout. This is a discussion that continues internally and your comments help move that discussion forward.
That being said, and I think that I may have mentioned it in this thread before, we have work to do when it comes to estate planning. The best recommendation that I can give at the moment is to print out your Emergency Kit, write your account password onto the kit, and then store it in your bank's safe deposit box or a personal safe. I do agree that the Emergency Kit isn't accessible for everyone, I think that my parent's would struggle with it if they had to use it to get into my account in an emergency.
While I can't promise that printing will be implemented, I've passed along your feedback to our product team. 🙂

I'm personally on the support team and I don't have the ability to make product decisions. I can say that my colleagues and I on the support team have passed along your feedback and now our product team will consider that feedback for future versions of 1Password.
We tend not to pre-announce new changes since that usually results in disappointment and frustration if a change has to be postponed or cancelled. But if the print feature does come to 1Password 8 you'll find it announced in our release notes: 1Password Releases

I agree with everyone in this thread--the security kit does not feel enough. Please, reintroduce the printing! This has to be a high-priority issue as it obviously makes lots of people uncomfortable.

Thank you for the feedback. Can you tell me a little more about how you personally would use the print feature and could you expand on what you mean when you say that "the security kit does not feel enough"? I would be happy to pass your thoughts along to our product team.
