Apple Watch unlock intermittently doesn't unlock the 1Password for Mac app

...is how frequently 1Password "forgets" to allow sign-in to the app or the browser extension using touchID on iOS or my watch on Mac, then forces me to enter my password manually. Several times a day. And this often after the OS itself has just allowed login to the device via the same means - for instance, I just unlocked my Mac with apple watch, so the mac is "seeing" the watch. Why doesn't 1password?

1Password Version: 8.10.4
Extension Version: 2.10.0
OS Version: 13.3.1(a)
Browser:_ Safari, Arc, doesn't matter

    Hello @cfritze64! 👋

That definitely doesn't sound right. Since both apps work differently regarding how they use Touch ID or Apple Watch unlock let's focus on the Mac app first. So that I can better understand the situation can you tell me the following:

    1. If you use Touch ID on the Mac then, when you're unable to use your Apple Watch to unlock 1Password are you still able to unlock the app using Touch ID?
    2. When you're unable to unlock 1Password using your Apple Watch is it just after waking your Mac from sleep? Are you still able to authenticate macOS system prompts using the watch? The next time that the issue occurs please try this test:

    Steps:

    1. Click on the  in the menu bar.
    2. Click System Settings.
    3. Click Privacy & Security.
    4. Click Advanced.
    5. As a temporary troubleshooting step, turn on "Log out automatically after inactivity".
    6. You'll now see a macOS system prompt asking you to confirm the action. You should receive a double-tap notification on your Apple Watch.

Are you able to use the Apple Watch to authenticate the macOS system prompt? Once this test is complete you can turn off "Log out automatically after inactivity" if you wish.

I use an M1 MacBook Air. Often it’s in clamshell mode connected to an Apple studio display. That’s where unlocking 1Password by watch is unreliable.

Focusing on Mac first as you suggested. TouchID comes into play on my iPad Air

Thank you for the reply. On your Mac, the next time that you're unable to use your Apple Watch to unlock 1Password can you try the test that I suggested above:

This will help us narrow down the issue. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Dave. No, on turning on "Log out automatically after inactivity", the Mac only gave the option to enter my password via keyboard. I wasn't offered a double-click prompt on the watch.

Thank you for the reply. If you're unable to use your Apple Watch to authenticate a macOS system prompt either then it sounds like the issue is with the communication between your Apple Watch and your Mac rather than within 1Password. Our developers have filed a bug report for this with Apple but I would also encourage you to reach out to Apple yourself to report the issue and see if they're able to provide additional support in your case.

If you get Apple Watch authentication working for the macOS system prompt but 1Password is still not working then please let me know and we can continue troubleshooting.

Fair enough. thanks for the guidance. I'll pursue it with Apple.

Likewise for my ipad Air issue, where touchID works to unlock the system but gets "forgotten" most of the time as an unlock option for 1password?

  • @cfritze64

Let me know if Apple provides any guidance about the Apple Watch unlock issue that you're running into on your Mac. I'll make a note to update this thread if our developers hear back on our end. 🙂

On your iPad, are you also being prompted for your account password instead of Touch ID several times a day? Or less frequently than that? As a start, can you check the following setting:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password.
    2. Tap your account or collection at the top of the sidebar and then tap Settings.
    3. Tap Security.

What is "Require password" set to? Are you being prompted for your account password on your iPad more often than what this setting is set to?

Our development team is having trouble reproducing the intermittent Apple Watch unlock behaviour that you reported when using the latest version(s) of watchOS (9.5.2) and macOS (Ventura 13.4.1).

We'd like to know if you're still experiencing the issue and, if you are, to let us know what versions of watchOS and macOS you're currently running. If you're not already on the latest version of both watchOS (9.5.2) and macOS (Ventura 13.4.1) you can update to them by following these steps:

Let me know if you can still reproduce the issue, and what specific versions of watchOS and macOS you're running, and I can pass along your report to our development team.

Greetings Dave. I have not had the issue again recently. Back when I first had the problem (a few minor OS updates ago) your prior suggestion to make the change in System Settings to auto-log-out solved the issue for weeks at a time. Now with new software updates I haven't noticed the issue again.

  • @cfritze64

Thank you for the reply, I'm happy that you're no longer seeing the issue. If you do run into the problem again in the future then let me know. 🙂
