Using 1PW7 after 1PW8, Backup Strategies, and Cloud Backup Verification
Can I run 1Password 7 after running the latest beta of 1Password 8, without damaging my database?
What's the best way to create a local backup, preferably encrypted?
What about 1Password Cloud backup? I don't see any method for confirming 1PW cloud backups, nor am I sure about how many versions are backed up. There used to be a way to control how many local backups were kept, if I recall correctly. Has that feature been removed?

Hello @spinoza! 👋
1Password 8 backs up your items to your account on 1Password.com. You can restore previous versions of an item from item history: View and restore previous versions of items

You can revert back to 1Password 7 after running 1Password 8 without running into database issues. However, 1Password 7 is no longer supported and isn't receiving regular updates anymore. Is there a particular reason why you'd like to revert back to using 1Password 7?

Hi Dave @Dave_1P,
Restoring individual items fails to adequately meet my needs, given the constant addition and removal of new items. How can I identify completely new items (and thus missing from a backup), or those that have been deleted?
I wish to revert to 1Password 7 for its duplicate removal tool. Despite its limitation of only removing exact duplicates, it remains better than having no option at all. I have more than 5000 passwords, many of which are nearly identical. These duplicates arose during my transition from the standalone 1PW6 to the subscription model—I migrated both standalone and cloud vaults from several computers, assuming duplicates would be merged, or could be screened in bulk. This situation occurred before 1Password implemented measures to help prevent this issue, which I had identified—an example of the risks of early adoption.
I've communicated my concerns about this problem here and to support for years. However, the only proposed solution so far has been to manually review and delete the duplicates. I've already manually deleted/merged about 2000 near duplicates, with many more remaining.

I'm afraid that I don't have anything more to add than what Ben and the support team already shared: at the moment there isn't a way to automatically identify and resolve duplicate items using 1Password 8 for Mac. I see that my colleagues have already shared your feedback that you find such a feature to be vitally necessary with the Product team internally.
The "Clean up duplicate items" tool that was included in 1Password 7 is very conservative. If two items are even a tiny bit different (modified date, etc), 1Password 7 will not remove them. You can certainly install 1Password 7 and try to use the tool to see if that might resolve some of your duplicate items. Any that are remaining will need to be removed manually.
I understand that it's a frustrating situation and I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you at this time.

Thank you for your response. I did attempt to use 1Password 7 again, and the “Clean Up Duplicate Items” tool managed to find four duplicates among hundreds of near-duplicates.
I'm still uncertain about my other inquiries concerning backups.
Understanding 1Password's hesitance to provide a deduplication tool or suggest a workaround might help us accept these limitations. Similarly, we're unsure why the user control over backups was removed. The rationale we were given, that 1Password is concerned users might unintentionally delete necessary passwords, doesn't quite add up. It would be more logical to incorporate ample warnings and disclaimers, or even require us to sign a liability release. Furthermore, no explanation has been provided for the removal of backup controls.
