I would love to have the ability to add, edit, or delete tags for all selected items.

I see people have asked for this feature, and that you have said it's coming.

Can you provide a status update?

  • Hi @mr_fixit 👋

Thank you for writing in about the ability to perform bulk actions on tags. I'd like to note that the threads linked to relate to 1Password 7, which is an older version of the 1Password app that is no longer receiving regular updates. 1Password 8 is a brand new experience that has been built from the ground up with some new features that weren't present in 1Password 7.

In 1Password 8, you can add an already created tag to multiple items at once by selecting those items and dragging them to the tag in the sidebar. Additionally, if you right click a tag in the sidebar you can rename the tag for all items it's been added to, as well as remove the tag from all items it's currently added to. You can read more about working with tags in 1Password 8 here: Organize with favorites and tags

I hope that helps. If I've misunderstood your request, I do apologize and would like to ask for some more clarification on the specific features you're looking for. I’m happy to pass along any feedback you may have on how we can improve how tags work in 1Password 8 to our Product team.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I had visited that help page earlier today, and saw 'To delete a tag, right-click the tag in the sidebar and choose Delete Tag.', but failed to understand 'in the sidebar'. I somehow thought it was talking about 'in an item detail' pane.

    Thanks for the feature!

I'd like to remove a tag from multiple items (e.g., the ones currently selected, or the ones currently showing as the result of a search), but not delete the tag completely. Is that possible?

    @SteveCh

Thanks for the question! The best way to remove a tag from multiple items is to add a new tag to the items that you'd like to leave tagged and then delete the old tag:

    1. Open the 1Password desktop app.
    2. Add a new tag to one of your items: Organize with favorites and tags
    3. Click on the tag that you'd like to remove from certain items in the sidebar.
    4. Select the items that you'd like to keep tagged and then drag and drop them to the new tag that you created in step 2. This will add the new tag to those items.
    5. Delete the old tag.

You can then rename the new tag to the name of the old tag. Let me know if that works. I've also passed along feedback to the team to let them know that a more intuitive way of bulk removing tags would be useful.

Thanks so much for your quick response! That almost works... I want to remove tag A from all items that are also tagged B. To implement your approach, I need to be able to select all items that are tagged with A and not with B (so that I can tag those with a new tag C.

Does 1Password allow me to search for items that do NOT match a tag? I can't find anything in documentation for search syntax that let's me specify negative criteria.

  • @SteveCh

Thanks for the reply. At the moment, the only "negative" search filter available is =untagged to find items with no tags at all: Search in the 1Password app to find what you need

I've let the team know that you're like more negative search filters. For the time being, manually retagging the relevant items is the best option. I'm sorry that I don't have a more convenient solution.

Thanks Dave. Unfortunately, that's over 100 individual items to manually edit, so I won't be doing that.

Hopefully more search options are added to 1Password in the future. Thanks again for the feedback. 🙂
