1Password for Mac 8.10.30 (81030032)

How can I start 1PW minimized if I select within the settings of 1PW that it should start with login? Currently, it starts the notification in the menu bar and the main window.

1Password Version: 8.10.30

  • Hello @CologneGuy! 👋

I'm sorry that you're seeing 1Password open unexpectedly when you login to your Mac. It's normal for 1Password's icon to appear in the menu bar like this:

    image

If this what you're seeing? Or are you seeing 1Password appear in the Dock (at the bottom of your screen) or seeing the app's main window open after a restart? When you restart your Mac do you have "Reopen windows when logging back in" turned off?

This icon I can see and that's OK. It is also necessary for the shortcuts.

Or are you seeing 1Password appear in the Dock (at the bottom of your screen) or seeing the app's main window open after a restart?

Correct. The app's main window appears in the dock and opens as window.

When you restart your Mac do you have "Reopen windows when logging back in" turned off?

It was and is turned off. That was the first I have checked. I have also restarted my Macbook several times from the scratch (this means not just log-off/log-on).
Later I have checked if there is a new setting within 1PW w/r to the main window.

    BTW: Macbook Air 15", M3, macOS 14.4.1

  • Hi @CologneGuy - thanks for sharing those further details.

We're currently aware of an issue where 1Password for Mac can unexpectedly open in the Dock on start up and the development team are working towards a fix, but we wouldn't expect this issue to also cause the main 1Password window to open.

The only way I've been able to replicate this behaviour is by adding 1Password to the Open at Login list in the Login Items section of my Mac's System Settings. Do you see 1Password listed there?

It is listed in the Login Items. If I deactivate 1PW in this section, 1PW not even appears in den menu (independent if the setting is already activated within 1PW settings). As soon as I activate 1PW in the Login Items it appears in the menu again but then also the main windows appears.

This is what 1PW looks like if it is activated in the a.m. section:

Thanks for the reply. 1Password uses a different method to launch at startup and I recommend that you make sure that this method is setup and then remove 1Password from "Open at login". Follow these steps:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Mac.
    2. Click on 1Password next to the  in the menu bar.
    3. Click Settings and then General.
    4. Make sure that both "Keep 1Password in the menubar" and "Start at login" are turned on.

Then open the macOS Settings app:

    1. Click on the  in the menu bar and then click System Settings.
    2. Click General and then click Login items.
    3. Remove 1Password from the "Open at login" section. If you have a browser added here then remove it as well since 1Password's browser extension could be launching the desktop app when the browser loads.
    4. Make sure that 1Password is turned on in the "Allow in the Background" section.

Then restart your Mac, make sure that "Reopen windows when logging back in" is turned off when restarting. Do you still see the main window appear?

    Dave,

it still appears. Here are the settings as per your description. I have installed 1PW browser extension within Chrome. Chrome itself does not start on login.

Just to clarify, you previously said that the main window no longer appears when you remove 1Password from the "Open at login" section. Are you now seeing 1Password's main window open at startup even when 1Password is removed from "Open at login"?

When you restarted your Mac did you make sure to uncheck the following:

I can understand that my replies are misleading. Therefore, summarized reply below.

With these settings, main window of 1PW pops-up:

1PW is not in the "Open at login" section but background. If I turn off background, 1PW does not start. This means no main window but also no entry at the menu bar at the top of the screen.

    "Reopen windows..." is unchecked.

The browser extension for Google Chrome is installed. Chrome itself is not in the "Open at login" section. Only in the background but that's the process to keep Chrome updated.

  • @CologneGuy

Thanks for the reply. So that I can better understand the situation, I'd like you to try a troubleshooting test. Make sure that your settings are set the way that I described in this previous post, then do the following:

    1. Right-click on the 1Password icon in the menu bar and click Quit.
    2. Click on the  in the menu bar and then click Shut Down.
    3. Make sure that "Reopen windows when logging back in" is unchecked and then click Shut Down.

Does the main window open again when you turn the Mac back on?

    @Dave_1P

    Hello,

Since about two updates I have exactly the same problem! I also tried different things to resolve this problem but nothing worked!

When I came across this thread, I tried your solution but the result is still the same, do you have any other solutions please?

In the meantime, to no longer have to face this problem, I deactivated the opening when starting 1Password.

I have been a 1Password customer for many years, I couldn't see life without it. I suffered and I was saddened by the passage of the subscription without having the possibility of obtaining a perpetual license, I know what the hard work of a developer is and I thank you for it, but it is still sad to pay a subscription to have a app with bugs!

    Have a nice day,
    Franck

I have re-checked as per your latest post.
The question "Does the main window open again when you turn the Mac back on?" must be answered with Yes.

I try to do a short clip with my camera and browse through the settings. @Dave_1P, how can I share such a clip with you? I'd like not to use this forum due to size.

  • Hi @CologneGuy - I'd like to ask you to share the screen recording by attaching it directly to an email sent to support+forum@1password.com.

@ArtFaks - I'm sorry to hear that you've also been affected. Are you also seeing the main 1Password window open on start up, or only seeing 1Password open in the Dock?
