Browser updates (of which there are none) prevents Windows Hello

It seems an old problem discussed here https://1password.community/discussion/125313/1password-chrome-extension-keeps-getting-locked-because-an-update-is-available have pop up and affect me.

I'm using Opera (Chromium) and have not had any issues until 2-3 weeks ago when the browser extensions started getting logged out often and the text that a browser update is causing it to ask for master password.

I have the 1Password App installed which can't be unlocked using Windows Hello either and always requires master password.
I've turned on and off the Windows Hello integration and tested with and without the TPM option but it seems that the logout and requiring master passwords comes back after some time (a few hours) or after my laptop has locked and I reopen it.
Windows Hello works fine for logging in to Windows obviously.

Browser and 1Password are up-to-date and I have re-installed both App and Browser extension and restarted several times to try and get round it.

1Password Version: 8.10.36
Extension Version: 2.25.1
OS Version: Windows 11
Browser: Opera

  • Hello @awasen! 👋

Thank you for reaching out. Opera isn't a supported browser for 1Password which means that integration between the 1Password desktop app and the browser extension won't work. An issue in previous versions of 1Password may have allowed you to use app integration with Opera but this issue had since been fixed.

You may still be able to use 1Password in Opera but you'll need to unlock the browser extension using your account password rather than using Windows Hello.

Alternatively, you can switch to a supported browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and more.

Or I can switch our Business account to another Password manager that works with Opera...

It's been working fine for about three years, up until about 2 weeks ago though...

I'm sorry that I don't have better news to share. On the Mac, we recently released a custom trusted browsers feature which allows you to add an unsupported browser with a valid code signature to 1Password for Mac. The team is hoping to bring this feature to Windows in the future but it's not available currently.

I've let the team know that you would find the feature useful.

For the time being, you may still be able to use 1Password with Opera but, since Opera isn't a supported browser, you'll need to unlock the extension separately from the desktop app using your account password. You can set your auto-lock settings to choose how often you'd like to be prompted for your account password: How to set 1Password to lock automatically

Sure, thanks, it's just annoying as it has been working just fine for years and now stopped... My colleague using the same setup as I also has the same issue... :(

Since Opera isn't a supported browser it's expected behaviour that app integration won't work for anyone who is using Opera on Windows as a result of a fix that was implemented in a recent version of 1Password that closed an issue that would allow unsupported browsers to use app integration in certain situations.

I understand the impact that this has to your use of 1Password and I wish that I had a better solution to provide. I've passed your experience and comments along to the team internally. On the Mac, as mentioned, folks can add Opera (or other unsupported browser) as a custom trusted browser and hopefully this feature makes its way to 1Password for Windows in the future to help folks like you and your colleague.
