re. "The Secure Note item (and field) isn't really designed for passwords":

With respect, this is a terribly shortsighted view. My expectation (based on decades of development and user experience) would be to be able to paste -any- plain text into a text field and have it stored and displayed -precisely- as entered.

I had some trouble quite some years ago when trying to extract a password in a string of text with, I believe, asterisks as described above, and could not for the life of me figure out why I could not log in somewhere important. Then I happened to go into the edit mode, and all of the special characters were displayed as I had entered them.

Please forgive the strong language, but this is one of the real user experience deficiencies in 1Password, like not being to reduce the application screen in (at least) macOS so that it doesn't take up nearly half of the horizontal space on my display.

Thank you very much for your informative and responsive posts in this forum; they are very much appreciated, especially as compared to most other vendor organizations.

By default, notes in 1Password are rendered with markdown formatting and are not rendered as plain text. This can cause issues if you have characters in your password that match markdown syntax. However, you can turn off markdown by following these steps:

    1. Open and unlock 1Password for Windows.
    2. Click your account or collection at the top of the sidebar and click Settings.
    3. Click General.
    4. Turn off "Format secure notes using Markdown".

As discussed in this thread, there's currently an issue with the rendering of line breaks in notes when markdown is turned off. Our development team is currently testing a fix and hopes to release it soon.

Thank you for the feedback. If you'd like to render text without markdown formatting then you can do so even in the browser extension, or the app when markdown is turned on, by encasing the text with three backticks: ```

    Here's an example:

    I hope that helps. 🙂

I'm split the discussion about other default options for markdown, and having an option to turn off markdown in the browser extension, into a new thread so that we can keep the other thread focused on the bug where line breaks and text selection aren't working for notes when markdown is turned off in the 1Password for Windows desktop app.

Extensions should honour the setting in the main app, or otherwise have a setting somewhere in the extension itself to do so.

Thank you for the feedback. Right now, the desktop app and the browser extension do not share the same settings but I've filed a feature request with the team to have them look into adding that functionality and/or adding a toggle for markdown in the browser.

Which features are implemented (and when) depends on a variety of factors that include: consideration for our existing product roadmap and planned features, urgent bug fixes that need to be prioritized over feature requests, available development resources, other customer feedback, and more.

All feedback is considered and prioritized carefully and the team works to implement features and fixes as quickly as possible.
