Sharing Vaults does not work!

I, like many, got excited about the prospect of sharing vaults via dropbox. I dutifully followed all the instructions to set up a secondary vault on my account. I sync it off to my chosen shared dropbox folder.

I then go to my other machine (my wife's) and double click on the file in dropbox I just created. It pops up and asks me for the password (which should be the same as I just created). Problem is the password I type is not accepted! WTF!

I have tried this now half a dozen times, half from my account and half from my wifes. I successfully set up a secondary vault. I then go to the other account and try to open it and the password is not accepted!

In other words, a complete and utter failure. Any help on what is going on? Did I misunderstand what? Can I share a vault or not ? if the password I just set up is wrong (and believe I have double, treble and quadruple checked the passwords I am typing are identical!) what IS the password it is looking for? Crazy ... and incredibly frustrating. Just wasted $50 for a second license for my wife and the one thing I want to do, share a vault does not work! :-(

Yup - same problem here. The password hint is (null) and my password is not accepted.

    Hi there,

I'm sorry you're both having trouble setting up secondary vault sharing. Our developers found a bug related to sandboxing with symptoms you've described. It's been resolved in the next update for the Mac App Store version (4.0.8), already submitted to Apple and awaiting their approval. You won't be affected by this problem running the Agile Web Store version (4.0.9).

    @finstoryteller,

I'd like you to try this workaround:

    • Select New Vault… under the 1Password menu on your wife's Mac to create a new secondary vault.
    • Use the same name/password for this new vault as those for the secondary vault that's being shared (with Dropbox Sync) from your Mac.
    • Enable Dropbox Sync with this new vault and select the correct shared vault,

This should get the shared vault synced up for both of you.

    @splyntyr1,

You can also try that workaround if your shared vault scenario and problem is similar to @finstoryteller's.

Please let me know how it goes!

I have 4.0.9 and this problem PERSISTS. double clicking on a shared vault in DB does NOT accept the correct password.

furthermore, the workaround described above DOES NOT WORK. I do not have time to be tweeting your customer support who demands that i post it here, after having already wasted too much time that I don't have FOLLOWING AGILEBITS' INSTRUCTIONS on how to share vaults like an unsuspecting lemming, only to find that it does NOT in fact work as per the instructions, because there is a BUG which has been around for almost a MONTH, and yet the instructions remain blissfully, serenely, WRONG.

(I've spent how much money on 1P purchases over the years? Don't make me do the math, I think it might come out to considerably more than $12/year which is what some competitor charges)

    [justified rant over]

My brother shares a vault with me, say "Lemming Family"
He creates it, saves it in DB.
Shares the DB link with me
I accept the share, and I get Dropbox > 1Password Lemming Family Vault > Lemming Family.agilekeychain
He shares the master password for this vault w me via 1p URL (which of course is unclickable in gmail)

I try the workaround as follows:

I create a new vault in my 1P
    I name it Lemming Family
I give it the same master password as he has
    Lemming Family Vault is created
I got to Prefs > Sync > Sync w Dropbox
    Dropbox is installed and running
I choose folder... and navigate to Lemming Family.agilekeychain
"1p found existing data it will be merged..." click continue
enter master pw for existing data in Dropbox - Password hint (null)
enter password he shared with me

    password refused.
double and triple check password, still no luck

blame self "it must be me!"

repeat entire process 3 times. same results.

realize the hours I will never have back again.

    vent online.

    Hi @redzep

    I'm sorry you're having trouble with 1Password 4.

Mistakes happen, so the first thing I did was check the help guide for vault sharing and it is 100% accurate. So, at least there's that. You aren't doing anything wrong if you're following those instructions.

That said though, I have seen this particular bug with one other user. It doesn't seem to be a very common issue, but it sure is an odd one that I have been unable to recreate myself. I'm one of the senior technical support gurus here so I tend to see the really strange and really difficult. The fact that I've only seen this one other time indicates it's a pretty rare reported issue.

One thing I would love to have you try first is to try 1PasswordAnywhere and test there. To do this you just do the following:

    1. Open Dropbox.com
    2. Locate your shared keychain
    3. Click inside it to find a 1Password.html file

When you click this file it will open a webpage that looks just like 1Password 3 for Mac. Type in your master password for that shared vault.

    Does it unlock?

Based on the feedback from the other user who had this issue it does unlock. But I would like to confirm this actually happens so we can start to look at confirming it is the same issue.

At this point we want to go to a more private 1-1 discussion so we can get some more information that we typically don't want posted on the forum. Part of my job here at AgileBits is to maintain a tool that helps AgileBits staff gather information about 1Password configuration, setup and computer configuration for troubleshooting.

I'd like to ask you to create a Diagnostics Report. They are easy to generate and allow us to take a peek under the hood and see what's happening behind the scenes. To help you create a diagnostics report we have written a guide that you can view here:

    http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/diagnostic-report.html#mac4

Please do that and after clicking the "Create Report" button a big blue icon should appear. Open your favorite email client or webpage and send an email to support+forum@agilebits.com. Please write a brief (1-2 sentence) description of the problem and include a link to this discussion. You're welcome to put my name in the subject so I can quickly locate it. Then, drag the big blue icon from the tool into the email so you can attach it.

This will send me some information about what 1Password is configured to do and any errors that occurred during its operation. No private information is sent with this report. You're welcome to review it prior to sending though. There is an html file in the main folder of the zip file, along with crash logs for the various web browsers and 1Password (if any exist in the last 30 days), 1Password log files, the last 1000 lines from system.log, and finally a dump of preference files so we can see the plist files 1Password is using to store preferences. All of it should be browsable from a web browser or standard text editor.

I look forward to seeing the report so I can help get this issue fixed up for you. We'll follow up via email from here on out so you can get the 1 on 1 support to fix this.

And your comment that the instructions are "100% accurate" is disingenuous at best when you have three users in this thread alone for whom the instructions are "100%" useless.

    Hi @redzep

They are accurate but that doesn't mean a bug doesn't exist in the software.

Have you sent in the diagnostics report that I requested? I've been checking daily for an email from you (using the email you used to register on the discussion forums here) but haven't found one. If you used another email please let me know what you used so I can locate it.

That is the next step. If I can get the report then we can begin looking into what is happening. I can't do that via a forum like this, so please, email in and let me help you.
