Backup/Restore vaults other than 'Primary'

I am inquiring if there is a procedure to restore backups from vaults that are not 'Primary'.

I recently purchased a new Mac and was under the impression that the backup functionality backed up all of my data from my old Mac (including multiple vaults.) I used Dropbox to backup my 1Password data. When I installed 1Password on my new Mac, restored my data using the '1Password.agilekeychain' from my Dropbox, only my Primary vault was restored.

Is there any method to restore the other vaults I created?

    Anyone know the solution?

I've lost some really important passwords because I did not know that other than the Primary vault, your other vaults aren't backed up -- which appears to be the case.

    Hi, @AeroEchelon.

I'm sorry you're currently missing some of your important 1Password data from secondary vaults. I can help you locate a full backup of all your vaults that 1Password automatically saves and then recover the data you need.

First, please select File > Restore… from the menu in the main 1Password 4 application to open the Preferences > Backup window that looks like this:

Do you see any backups listed there that are older than when you restored 1Password data on your new Mac from your Dropbox keychain?

If you don't have 1Password backups that old there do you have any backups (in general) of your old Mac where you can get them from? Or, even better, is your old Mac and all its data (including for 1Password) still accessible?

When you've located the older 1Password backups/data then we can move to the next step of recovering what's missing.

If you'd like to get additional help resolving this through email please send a Diagnostics Report from the Mac where the missing 1Password backups/data could be (if possible); instructions are here:

Sending us your Diagnostics Report to help us help you!

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forum, but do include a link to this topic and your forum username in the email so we can "connect the dots" when we receive it. Thank you!

I tried the Restore but it’s not showing any backup files.  When I select to show files, it says “Operation can’t be completed because the items can’t be found”. I see backup files in my User’s Library/Application Support. I sent the Diagnostics Report. It's critical that I get the vaults restored. It contains all my client data. If the vaults are going to be backed up to DropBox then Agile needs to let us know. Very disappointed.

    Hi, @Dianeoforegon.

I'm sorry you're having trouble restoring your 1Password data. We've received your Diagnostics Report, which shows that you have 4.1.3 (website) and 4.1 (MAS) versions of 1P4 installed using separate, recently modified databases.

Since the website version has multiple vaults let's make sure you can access that, first by disabling the MAS version:

    • Run 1Password 4.1 (/Applications/1Password.app).
    • Disable the Always keep 1Password mini running option under Preferences… > General:

    • Press Control-Command-Q to Quit 1Password and 1Password mini.

Next, run 1Password 4.1.3 (/Applications/1Password 4.app) and see if you can access your data there in multiple vaults, before trying to restore anything.

Please post your results here after doing that and we'll have a better idea what you can do next. Thanks!

My continuing saga...I restarted and got my vaults back. Then I got a notice to update and after I updated I lost my vaults again. I tried restoring from Time Machine and wasn't sure which version of 1Password to use. I have the App Store version and the beta version. I restored and no vaults. Restarted again and this time another version of 1Password opened and the vaults were back. I immediately exported data from all vaults. Checked to see which version of 1Password was running and found it was a version in User's Application Support. Very strange. I determined which app was the beta and launched. It had my vaults. Running 4.1.3 (413001). I don't know what happened to cause all the confusion, but glad it's over. I think a blog article on managing vaults is in order so we don't panic when something goes haywire.

Is saving all vaults to DropBox in the works?

    Hi, @Dianeoforegon.

I'm not sure what state 1Password is in now but am glad you appear to have resolved your problem with it. :)

Please note it's more difficult to make suggestions if you're making changes during the process of helping you.

If the vaults are going to be backed up to DropBox then Agile needs to let us know.

There are no automatic backups of your 1P4 data to Dropbox. 1P4 only uses Dropbox if you've configured a vault to sync with a 1Password keychain there.

I disabled in the MAS version. I had not run it in ages and not sure how it got launched after I restarted. The beta version is now working.

FWIW, your suggestion had not posted for me when I posted my second response.

    Sounds good, @Dianeoforegon.

No worries about our almost overlapping posts. Neither of us had no way of knowing that would happen until after it did. :)

By the way, 4.1.3 is a non-beta release.

How do I get back to the beta builds? I restored from Time Machine that had beta builds. I checked for updates and I'm back to 4.1.3 and does not mention beta in version. I purchased from MAS but would prefer to stay on beta. What do I need to delete so I only have one. This is confusing.

    Hi, @Dianeoforegon.

To be notified of beta builds when checking for updates make sure Include beta builds is enabled under Preferences… > Updates:

Right now you're up-to-date with 4.1.3 because it's more recent than the latest beta build.

Which versions of 1P4 do you have installed now? You definitely don't want to delete 4.1.3. :)

I have 4.1.3. What confused me was we used to see beta builds in the about window. I thought I was back in the MAS version when I didn't see beta builds.

    Hi, @Dianeoforegon.

Here's one way to identify the versions:

If you see 1Password in the main app menubar you're running a MAS version. And it doesn't have License… or Check for Updates… under that menu, nor a Preferences > Updates tab.

If you see 1Password 4 in the main app menubar you're running an AgileBits Store or beta version. And if it's a beta then BETA will be part of the version text you see in the About 1Password window.

    I hope that helps. :)
