Syncing via FTP/OwnCloud

Hi,

i'm using 1Password on Windows, Mac and iOS and i'm very happy with them :). Currently i'm syncing via Condo^z .. äh, Dropbox. I want to delete my DropBox-Account and use an alternative way of syncing hosted by myself. WLan and iTunes Sharing are not an option because they have not this autmatic magic like DropBox. How to implement an option via FTP or OwnCloud?

  • Hi @grizzz,

We are aware of the demand for people to be able to synchronize their 1Password data using other sync services. Thanks for the feedback!

If you are syncing exclusively between Macs, then you can use Folder Sync with pretty much any sync service you want. This also appears to be holding up well in the 1Password 4 for Windows beta. But settling on one or two additional sync services and bringing them to 1Password for iOS and Android takes much more time.

Please see this post for details:

Alternatives to Dropbox cloud syncing: iCloud, Google Drive, SkyDrive, etc.

    Hi JasperP

Alternatives to Dropbox cloud syncing: iCloud, Google Drive, SkyDrive, etc.

Please also implement a private cloud solutions like OwnCloud, WebDav or SFTP.
As we can see on the HeardBleed compromise of Dropbox and Google Drive, internet Cloud services are no option for our most important and data.

    Hi @xamino,

Thanks so much for adding your thoughts here! Researching alternative sync solutions is always a high priority for us - even moreso in light of recent events. While we can't comment much further than we already have, we're listening to all your feedback. :)

Yes, a possibility of sync with owncloud would be really important.. I also wait for that. At this times a lot of people want to sync over own systems because the cannot or won't trust the foreign systems as Dropbox.

    +1 for OwnCloud,
or simply a wider «Folder Sync» possibility to transfer this (local) synced vault to a mobile Device easily.

+1 owncloud. BTW The new owncloud 6 supports Firefox sync so another AOL-type locked in service can be avoided. Agile please do your name honor and allow small custom solutions rather then making us rely on the monoliths.

    Hi @maxziebell‌

Thanks so much for adding your thoughts here. As I've mentioned before, our developers are exploring options to provide you all with flexible sync alternatives. Please understand that even when a sync solution hits all the necessary targets, it's no small matter to integrate it across all the platforms that we support. :)

Another vote for ownCloud - having to use a cloud hosted 1password competitor at the moment, but would rather use 1password if I could host it myself. I don't trust Dropbox, particularly with its choice of directorship. (Though it's notable that they do appear trustworthy in EFF's reports https://www.eff.org/who-has-your-back-2014)

Well I would really appreciate if it would be possible to just copy the 1Password database on OS X to the Windows client. I don't understand why the database file has to be incomplatible. If it would be compatible one could simply use (for example) Bittorrent Sync.

Currently I can't use the windows client because there is now way I can securely sync the passwords between Windows, OS X and iPhone. I was very disappointed after I bought the windows version and found out that there is no way to sync it automatically.

So for me it's also a +1 for sFtp.

+1 on ownCloud. Folder sync would be good too, but I know you have your own hurdles where that is concerned. I'm looking for solutions for my clients and sharing multiple vaults, so the more options the better. :-)

+1 for ownCloud! I think many are leaving Dropbox so this would be a great implementation.

+1 for ownCloud - It's an amazing service taking in the ex-customers of all the previously popular cloud-storage operators, and it would be greatly complemented (especially in the iOS appstore) by support from your application. Currently (I believe) no other password management app exists on the appstore that supports ownCloud sync, so here's your chance to snatch up even more users.

Since the Apple 2-step auth security scandal (see Techcrunch news), i think it became even more evident that the best cloud provider is your own.

I totally agree that being less dependent on a huge US cloud provider is a very good thing.
