Is 1Password seriously charging me again for the same software?

I have been having issues with 1Password working with Firefox, my main browser, and it appears this time the issue is that 1Password has upgraded to version 4, and I must now pay another $25 to keep the program working as an extension. I know, Oooohs and Ahhhs for "nearly" 100 new features, which I will never use. I was able to upgrade with a 30 day free trial, and thus far I'm unimpressed. At least now I have plenty of time to look for a better and cheaper alternative.

I'm assuming you were using a licensed copy of 1Password 3 before, why not simply download it again?

Now if the problem was a recent update to Firefox has broken the last extension you could use then your options could include not updating Firefox.

Agilebits has seen to it that the new updates of Firefox only support 4. Not updating Firefox is easier said than done. It constantly updates. How about not charging people again for something they've already paid $40-50 for? It's just not worth it.

You can easily stop Firefox updating from the Advanced tab in Preferences. Of course doing so could put you at risk but it would allow your licensed version of 1Password and the extension to keep working.

As for feeling forced to purchase a new licence, $50 seems to be for a fresh copy of 1Password 4 but they seem to offer a discount for those upgrading from a previous version. Now I can't see what that discount comes to as you need to enter your old licence key first. If paying at all is the sticking point I'm sorry but I thin you're being unreasonable to some extent. Most companies can't afford to offer indefinite free updates to their product - they have bills to pay and generally need to make a profit too to survive which I don't begrudge AgileBits. Microsoft have just finished supporting Windows XP is a big example. It's a sliding scale of course, if you're getting hit for massive prices for minor version changes on a regular basis then most people will feel outraged. If a lot of work has gone into a new version, either because a ground up re-write for up-to-date systems or a lot of improvements in terms of functionality then is it so wrong to find a revenue source to fund that work?

AgileBits haven't stopped your licensed copy from working, merely updates to other programs are now causing compatibility issues.

    Hi @dred,

I certainly don't want you to feel forced into an upgrade here. If you would like to continue using 1Password 3, we are happy to continue supporting it and will do the best that we can to ensure that it works as smoothly as possible.

You can download legacy versions of 1Password 3, and the version 3 browser extensions are available on our extension download page.

If you would like some help switching back from your trial of version 4 to version 3, we're here for you. :)
