1Password won't fill on certain websites that uses Basic Authentication prompts [Confirmed]

Hello,

I'm migrating to 1Password from Roboform and I've noticed that 1Password doesn't work on certain kinds of sites that Roboform has no problem with. For instance, portal.adp.com . Rather than having forms in the website to fill out, a box appears that you put the username password into. It's like this on a few of the sites I use. Roboform handles it fine, but 1Password doesn't seem to. Is there a solution?

Thanks!

    Hi @Adam64,

At the moment, 1Password does not support Basic Authentication prompts, which is what you're referring to. This is something we do plan to support in a future update to our extensions in Chrome and/or Firefox but I don't have a timeframe on this.

What you can do is anchor the Login item in 1Password mini before copying and pasting the data in, this should make it easier. To do this:

    1. Open 1Password mini by pressing Command + Option +\
    2. Find your item and hover it to show its details view, press the anchor button on bottom left of the details view
    3. Click on the username to paste into the Basic Auth's username field and then repeat for the password.

Thanks Mike. I couldn't help but notice that you didn't mention Safari for the development of that feature. Is it coming for Safari too? Thanks!

  • Hi @Adam64,

As far as we know right now, Safari doesn't have an API that we can use to integrate the extension with, only Firefox and Chrome added it a while ago. That means for now, it is not coming to Safari until Apple improves its extension API.

This feature can't come soon enough because more and more websites are going to Basic Authentication prompts. I just encountered the "problem" on Paypal for the first time yesterday.

I find it easier to use the main 1Password program to get at the information.

Hi @AgileBear‌ I'd actually be very concerned if PayPal brought up a Basic Authentication prompt. It hasn't in the past for myself and they have an established process for logging in already. To change to another system like that would set off warning bells in my head.

Personally I'd suggest visiting https://www.paypal.com logging in there and changing your password. Maybe I'm being paranoid but something just doesn't sound right to me.

I'd like to echo the pain point here - not being able to log into ADP's Web site due to the type of security prompt they use is a pain. LastPass was able to do this quite elegantly, so I very much hope 1password can offer this feature soon.

    Hi @Jason Dunn,

Thanks for your feedback about that! I can certainly pass that along to our developers.

Adding my £0.02 here, I've got an employer that uses basic auth loads for internal wiki pages. So low security in their eyes, since all the high security has been done in advance by allowing you on the network in the first place. Makes me have to let me browser keep track of passwords for these sites, which I'm not thrilled about!

There are still a lot of sites out there using basic HTTP authentication, and while using unique complex passwords for these can help reduce potential security exposure from these insecure sites, having a password manager that doesn't support this basic functionality significantly diminishes the value of 1Password as a password manager.

LastPass handled these without issue, and the lack of this feature is causing me to regret switching to 1Password.

Please do a little homework and provide this functionality for Firefox as soon as possible.

  • Thanks for upvoting this issue, @cmlunsford. You're absolutely right, this would be a great addition to 1Password.

While I can't say that we are actively working on this issue at the moment I can say that we've just finished the big 4.3 release of the extension and are considering HTTP Authentication for our next set of future enhancements. It's not a trivial change and will require a fair amount of focus to get right so please don't take this to mean we'll have it done soon. While I enjoy giving you a bit of visibility into our release schedule, it is always risky as schedules change frequently.

Long story short: this is on our radar for Firefox and Chrome; it will not be available in Safari.

    Cheers!
