Will 1Password 5 run on OS X 10.9.5?

Oops I may have jumped the gun ... saw the current upgrade deal and decided to make the move from 1P 3 to 5 but I'm not yet on Yosemite (missed the requirement in my haste). The downloaded app has the universal "no" symbol through it and won't open ("an error occurred while trying to open 1Password 5") so I'm guessing I made a mistake and can't run the new level on this machine. For work support reasons I can't move to Yosemite yet, probably not for a while.

Can someone please confirm the incompatibility and, if so:

  • can I get a refund?
  • where can I grab the V3 plug-ins for Safari and Firefox to re-enable my V3 function?

Thanks.

If you've already paid and got a licence file, I suggest you don't get a refund. Sat the bottom of the Downloads page, legacy versions are available. That includes version 4, for which your new licence will also work.

That is, unless you think you may need iCloud sync in the future. That requires the version from the App Store, and I believe the App Store rules also mean that you can no longer get version 4 from it.

Thanks danco ... I did find and install V4 and its plugins. A step up I suppose, and I guess this entitles me to V5 whenever I can get to Yosemite.

Now I have to figure out how to sync with my IOS devices. My file is kept in dropbox, and with V3 I synced by opening 1P on both my Mac and IOS device. Will have to research how to do it now (one device is at 8, one at 7, and I have both the older and newer versions of 1P on each!).

    Hi @pdimarzio‌

We can certainly assist with the transition if you need it.

Just as a point of clarification. With the mac version customers of both the Mac App Store and direct from us can obtain 1Password 4 for Mac with the caveat that to do so using the MAS you have to be running Mavericks. Basically, if the MAS recognises that the current version won't run because of an OS incompatibility it will offer up the last one that will, a bit like how iTunes does for iOS apps.

So pdimarzio‌, have you managed to migrate your entire vault from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4 on your mac? I also think the versions of 1Password for iOS that you're running may be important here. Your iOS 8 device can run 1Password 5 for iOS and that will be fine for syncing via Dropbox with your 1Password for Mac. I'm worried a little about your iOS 7 device though. Normally, what I said above about versioning holds true but we've tried something a little different with 1Password 5 for iOS and used the in-app feature to allow people to try it out and then buy if they need the additional features. Unfortunately, it means unless you specifically purchased 1Password 4 for iOS there isn't an easy way to get a copy of that.

So if you can let us know what version of 1Password for iOS you're hoping to run on the iOS 7 device and we can take it from there.

Just a final note, @danco‌ hasn't steered you wrong there, when you decide to upgrade to Yosemite you can move to 1Password 5 at no cost.

Thanks littlebobbytables. When I installed the new software on the Mac and IOS devices I was able to bring over the vault in each case. So here's the situation ...

My vault is stored in Dropbox.

    Previously I had the following:
    Mac OS X 10.9.5: 1P 3.8.22
    iPhone 5S IOS 8: 1P Pro 3.7.2
    iPad 2 IOS 7: 1P Pro 3.7.2

To sync, I would bring up 1P on my Mac and my device and the sync was performed because they were all connected to the same network. 1P on the Mac showed the devices under SYNC in the left sidebar.

ps - all of this is still installed on all devices, I didn't delete any of the older apps - they're still out there. But I have the new add-on in my Safari and Firefox browsers so not certain how any new or changed passwords are being managed from this point forward. I never change passwords on the IOS devices, only on the Mac, but want them available on the other devices.
ps - I'm not upgrading the Pad to IOS 8 due to reported performance issues running 8 on older devices.

    Here's what I have now:
    Mac OS X 10.9.5: 1P 4.4.3
    iPhone 5S IOS 8: 1P Pro V5.1.1
    iPad 2 IOS 7: 1P Pro V4.5.3

I don't see the devices on the Mac with V4, so I'm not at all clear where I should go from here in terms of keeping everything in sync! Any help appreciated.

ps - on the phone, with V5, I saw a "Pro Features" setting that gives the option to purchase for 9.99 or restore purchase. I clicked the restore option and it just says "restoring purchases ..." and never ends.
ps - it's interesting that V4 came onto the Pad! I made the "purchase" (it was free) of the IOS V5 version on the phone first, then on the pad just downloaded the app from the app store.

    @pdimarzio‌

Okay, as you've got 1Password 4 or greater on all your devices and don't mind syncing with Dropbox all the pieces are in place.

So the first thing is: synchronisation has changed a lot from 1Password 3 which you're familiar with. It used to store your only copy of the keychain in Dropbox and then all your devices would access that. Now each copy of 1Password stores its own local copy of your vault, in the case of 1Password for Mac it's an sqlite file. So when you sync with Dropbox it will create a sync keychain but if something goes wrong with that copy nothing is lost.

What that means is as long as you've moved completely from 1Password 3, that keychain you have in Dropbox is now redundant. So the first step I'd like you to do is to move that entire keychain from Dropbox to somewhere safe on your desktop (as a reassurance thing) but to make sure your Dropbox is clear of old keychains.

Having done that we're going to set up sync on your mac. Here's a link to the guide for doing so. Once that has synced, the new agilekeychain that will be visible in Dropbox will be a copy of the contents of your vault in 1Password 4 for Mac.

For syncing your iOS devices I'm going to assume they are fresh copies that want to set up a new vault when you launch it. If it isn't please let me know. But all you're going to do is point 1Password for iOS on each device to Dropbox and that should be it. The guide for this part is in this link for version 5 and this link for version 4. It's essentially the same process in both, but I'll link you to both in case the different screens were to throw you off.

Let me know how you get along but fingers crossed you'll be reporting back that all devices are synced and sharing your vault.

Holy smokes that worked like a champ! The only quirk in the process, on the IOS devices, is it warned me that there was a mismatch between the Dropbox and local vaults. I did a merge anyway and near as I can tell there are no issues with the data; perhaps I've re-enabled a few records I might have deleted on the Mac but that's ok.

To test I added a fake secure note on the Mac, brought up each device and it appeared almost immediately. Even deleted the note on one of the IOS devices and the resync cleaned it out on the other device and the Mac.

I do believe everything is in clean working order, thanks so much for the help!

I assume I can safely delete the V3 app from the Mac and the IOS devices without any repercussions now, right?

    Hi @pdimarzio‌

I'm so glad to hear that @littlebobbytables‌ was able to help get things sorted out for you!

Now that your database is up to date in 1Password 4, you can remove 1Password 3 from your Mac and iOS devices. On the Mac end of things though, I do want to caution you not to use any fancy app cleaners. Simply drag 1Password 3 from the Applications folder to the Trash. App cleaners can get a little bit zealous, and the backups that 1Password 3 has diligently saved for you can be handy to keep around ... at least until 1Password 4 has had a chance to build up its own database of backups.

Please do let us know if you have further questions.
