Forgotten Password During Setup

Hello,

I am helping a new user setup his 1password. The setup has run into a couple of glitches and he also does not remember his Master Password.

This was not a "clean" installation. How can a new user start with a clean slate and uninstall and start from scratch. Thanks.

Yes - it's possible to start over. Here is a knowledge base article telling you how to do it. Do bear in mind that procedure will lose all existing 1P data.

    Stephen.....Thanks! I will try that.

Stephen......The "Start Again" article DID NOT WORK, because it asked for the Master Password during the startup process. The problem we are having is that we don't remember the original master password. How do we start from scratch, so that a NEW master password can be created? Thanks!

If you followed exactly the steps in the article to which I linked you should not be asked for the old master password when you restart 1P. It should run as if started for the first time. Are you quite sure you did exactly what the article linked in my original post said?

Edit: note especially the initial need to close 1P, at the start of the procedure, using ctrl + cmd + q and not merely cmd + q.

Hi Stephen....Did NOT work again. .If you look at the Starting Over instructions, it does not show where you enter "ctrl + cmd + q." Where in the process is that done?

Sorry, ctrl + cmd + q is exactly the same as step 1 in the linked article:

While in the menu, hold down the Control key on your keyboard. The entry labelled “Quit 1Password” will now say “Quit 1Password and 1Password mini.” Select it.

I get so used to using keyboard shortcuts I forgot it was described like that. The key thing in that step is holding down the control key so you can see the menu item referred to.

I'm sorry, but I really don't know why the procedure for starting over is not working for you. I can't recall anyone else saying it didn't work so I'm not at all sure what's going on.

We may have to leave this for one of the AgileBits experts, I'm afraid. I'm sorry I was not able to help. I see @littlebobbytables‌ is around so I'm sure he'll ride to the rescue shortly.

Yes, please escalate to @littlebobbytables. Remember, this is not for my 1P.......I am helping a brand new user with the setup. I think maybe he had the trial version, created a master password, then FORGOT what the PASSWORD was when purchasing the full version from the Mac App Store.

Long Story Short....He would like to Start Fresh so that there can be a "Clean" install. He does not know what his Master PASSWORD is. No information will be lost, since he did not enter any passwords.

    Hi @Curious Brian

In the guide that Stephen_C linked you to step 1 was

    Step 1: Quit 1Password and 1Password mini

Now you can enter the drop down menu no matter what state 1Password is in, whether it is unlocked, locked or you're in the welcome screen for new users (which is our goal for you). Like Stephen_C because I'm now using 1Password so much I use the keyboard shortcuts instinctively. As long as 1Password is the active program (so in the menu bar in the left corner it says either 1Password or 1Password 5) then the keyboard shortcut ⌃⌘Q (where you hold both ctrl and cmd down then the q key) will quit both 1Password and 1Password mini. The same result can be achieved by opening up the 1Password menu as seen in this screenshot from the guide

Now normally at the bottom of that menu it would just say Quit 1Password ⌘Q but if you hold down the ctrl key while in that menu it changes to Quit 1Password and 1Password mini ⌃⌘Q

Does that help explain that step at all? please do let us know.

The problem is that after all these steps are done.....we are brought to a screen where a Master Password is supposed to be entered.....we want to start from scratch, because the original Master Password was forgotten. How do you start from scratch?

OK, so you go through all of the steps in the starting over article to which I linked...done and dusted, following the steps exactly as the article states. You should then be able to run 1P as for the first time.

Please tell us exactly at what stage you think you're being asked again for the old master password. Do you ever, for example, see the 1P welcome screen shown in the "Running 1P for the first time" article?

I know it's very tedious having to answer all these questions but we need to find out the precise point at which the series of steps is failing for you (or, rather, your new user). If you can tell us the point at which you see something different to the linked articles that will help us to nail the problem for you.

    That sounds very odd.

After Step 1 is complete, can you confirm what you are removing from within the Library for me please and also check to see if any of the following exist.

~/Library/Application Support/1Password/ If this folder exists they must have had 1Password 3 at some point. Please drag this to your desktop too as 1Password may be trying to be too helpful and is importing it thinking that's what you want (which it isn't)

~/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/ If this folder exists they must have used either 1Password 4 or 1Password 5 from the webstore at some point so you would want to follow the steps in the If you use the version of 1Password from the AgileBits store: part of the guide

~/Library/Containers/2BUA8C4S2C.com.agilebits.onepassword-osx-helper If this folder exists they must have used either 1Password 4 or 1Password 5 from Apple's Mac App Store at some point so you'd want to follow the steps in the If you use the Mac App Store version of 1Password: part of the guide.

What I'd suggest is make your way through each of those, don't assume if you find one the others won't exist given 1Password is determined to find a vault from somewhere.

Lastly, please do ensure you are following the very important step of rebooting your machine. Due to aggressive caching (I believe since Mountain Lion) if you don't reboot you can end up with some really funky behaviour. For example, I could have 1Password in the new user window but the extension opening up a vault - definitely not right

If you're still having problems we'll escalate this and help get you sorted. When you reply please do use @littlebobbytables‌ as each time you do I get pinged, that's what Stephen_C did to attract my attention

That's great to hear @Curious Brian‌ Can I ask, what did it turn out to be?

I think the main thing is to make sure every trace of any prior versions of 1Password is removed. I was just more thorough. Plus I also did a search in the Finder for other bits and pieces of previous 1 Password versions and removed those as well.
