Problems upgrading from 3.9.20 to 5

I've just purchased 1Password 5 and I'm trying to upgrade from version 3.9.20.

1Password is asking me where's my current vault. After much effort, and checking this support forum. I've found what I think is the current vault. I see a folder Macintosh HD/Users/oramccreary/Library/Application Support/1Password 4/Data. (Or maybe it's ~Library. But when it displays the folders in the path at the bottom of the Finder screen, it's just Library.)

In that folder are 3 files:
OnePassword.sqlite, updated 10/26/14,
OnePassword.sqlite-shm, updated today. (I made an update today using the Firefox add-in.), and
OnePassword.sqlite-wai, updated 10/26/14

But when the new software asks me to point it to the vault, I can't navigate to that folder.

When I originally found this folder, I used the Go / Go to Folder function. But now, in the Open File window in 1Password, the Go / Go to Folder function is not visible, and I can't find the Library file to navigate to it.

I'd like to save the file in the cloud (Dropbox, iCloud, ....) so I can sync it with my iPhone and my iPad.

What should I do now?

Thanks.

    Hi @omccreary‌

Do you still have 1Password 3 on this machine? If you do launch 1Password 3 and enter its preferences. In the General tab you should see where 1Password is currently storing your agilekeychain. If you point 1Password 5 to that it will pick up your existing vault.

The 1Password 4 folder is where both 1Password 4 and 5 (Web Store) store their support files so if you're upgrading from 1Password 3 that won't be your vault.

If after finding your .agilekeychain it's still in a place that seems inaccessible from the file selector window in 1Password one simple workaround would be to make a copy of your agilekeychain on your Desktop from within Finder. Desktop is a nice, easy and always accessible location.

Hopefully those small tips will lead you in the right direction but if you have more questions or need more detail please do let us know by posting here in the forums.

    Yes, I do have 1Password 3. I opened preferences > General, and I see:

Data File: Users > oramccreary > Dropbox > 1Password.agilekeychain. However, when I navigate to that folder in Finder, there's no file of that name.

    Hi @omccreary,

When you go to 1Password > Preferences > General, try right-clicking on the file path and choose Show In Finder. That should open the folder containing your 1Password.agilekeychain file, and also highlight that file so you can easily see which one it is.

Does that help? If not, what happens when you choose the Show In Folder option?

Show in Finder has no effect. However, when I navigate to that folder manually in Finder, I see the folder but not the file.

Finder shows this path at the bottom of the screen: Macintosh HD > Users > oramccreary > Dropbox. Then in the files/folders window I see a folder "1Password file". But I click on that folder and it's empty. When I right-click and select Get Info I see this under General: "Size: Zero bytes". But I do NOT see "Kind: Folder", as I do for other folders. There is nothing about the Kind of file.

I'm still unable to find the file.

In 1Password > Preferences > General, when I right-click, one of the options is "Move to Another Folder". I select that and in the Choose box I see 1Password.agilekeychain. That looks like the right file - but it's not visible in Finder, and I'm reluctant to try moving it before I check with you.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi @omccreary,

I'm not sure why that's not working as expected, but there are other ways to get your data from version 3 to version 5. At this point, it's probably easier to use one of those other methods.

Let's try using a backup file from 1Password 3 to restore the data to 1Password 5. To get the backup file from 1Password 3, follow these steps:

    • Open 1Password 3
    • Go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences, and select the Backup tab
    • Right-click on the file path for the backup folder, and choose Show In Finder

This will open a folder where you'll see the Backups folder for 1Password 3. Each backup file should have a name like "1Password_DATE_FORMAT.agilekeychain_zip" (where DATE_FORMAT would be the date the backup was made). Copy the most recent backup file to the Desktop, then follow these steps:

    • On the Desktop, you will need to rename the backup file to the following name: 1Password.agilekeychain.zip
    • After renaming it, double-click that file to unzip it, and it will now be named 1Password.agilekeychain
    • Open 1Password 5 on your Mac and set it up as a new user (choose the same Master Password you used in 1Password 3)
    • Once you're done with the setup, go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences
    • Select Sync > Folder and then choose the 1Password.agilekeychain file on the Desktop

This should restore the data from your backup file. Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions. :)

Thanks, but still no luck. Here's what happens:

I open 1Password. Check the version by clicking 1Password on menu bar, then About 1Password. It's version 3.8.20 (build 31499).

Then 1Password > Preferences. There is no Backup tab. The tabs I see are only: General, Browsers, Logins, Updates, Advanced.

    What now??

P.S. I clicked on File > Backup Data File. Got the message: "Database backup failed. The 1Password database could not be backed up. Database does not exist.

However, in Firefox I have the 1Password extension, and it does work. I see all my sites, login credentials, etc. 1Password works as expected, by automatically entering login data into a website login screen. I'm also able to update the information.

    Hi @omccreary‌

I don't know when or why it would have happened but it sounds like your agilekeychain has been deleted or removed from Dropbox. I'm assuming this means that when you open up the main 1Password 3 program your entries aren't there, even though they are in the 1Password 3 extension.

I'm going to move to email for the next part so you'll be hearing from us soon, I'll be using the email address you use here in the forums.
