Upgrade options from 1Password v3

Hi, I was looking at the upgrade options from 1Password version 3 which is the version I'm currently running on my iMac and MacBookPro, both running Mavericks. I see there is a discounted upgrade to 1Password v5, but that requires Yosemite which I don't want to upgrade to yet. If I bought an upgrade to version 5 can I use the licence with version 4? or what would you suggest as the best way forward. (I also have iOS devices running version 5.1.2). I also note that my databases on iOS and the Mac are inconsistent. What should be my sequence of upgrading?

Thanks for your help.

    Hi @stepheng‌,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us :+1:

You you upgrade your 1Password 3 license in our store you will get a license file that will work on both 1Password 4 and 1Password 5 for Mac.

You also mentioned that your 1Password databases on iOS and Mac are inconsistent. It is recommended that we sort out the database inconsistencies before upgrading to 1Password 4 for Mac. We need to make sure that all of your items are present on all your syncing devices.

Are you syncing via Dropbox using the same 1Password.agilekeychain file on all your devices?

Is there any device that contains all of your data, so we can use it on all your other devices? If

Looking forward to your reply

    Cheers!

Rad, Thanks. I can therefore upgrade the licence key but download 1Password 4 for the moment.

On the subject of Vaults. I use DropBox on my Macs to synchronise. When I upgraded my iPod Touch I guess it updated the then old 1Password vault (that had been wi-fi synced) rather than using the drop box vault. When I go in to the sync settings on the iPod Touch it shows Your Vault with 883 times and the Dropbox Vault with 997 items. I know for sure that while most of the items will be common, there will have been new items created on the iPod Touch and also new times on the Mac since I upgraded the iPod Touch. I also have an iPad which is still using version 3.7.2 and is wi-fi synced to the iMac. I fear that I have a bit of a muddle here!

To follow up the previous question, here are all the versions I'm currently running and what I think their sync status is:

    iMac running OS X 10.9.5 and 1Password 3.8.22

    MacBookPro running OS X 10.9.5 and 1Password 3.8.22

These two Macs are synced using DropBox.

I also have an old MacBook running OS X 10.7.5 and 1Password 3.8.21 synced via DropBox, but this is only used as a dedicated computer for a weather station and so I no longer really need 1Password on it.

iPod Touch running iOS 8.1.2 and 1Password 5.1.2. This seems to have its own vault which is inconsistent with the DropBox Vault and there are definitely items on this iPod that are not on the Macs and vice versa. I think that when I updated I believed I was moving to a DropBox vault but I obviously didn't do it correctly.

iPad running iOS 8.1.2 running 1Password 3.7.2. `This is Wi-Fi synced to the iMac.

I also have an old iPad (1st Gen) running an old version of iOS and an old version of 1Password, but like the old MacBook I no longer really need 1Password to work on it.

    Questions:

How do I get the vault on the iPod Touch and the DropBox based vaults on the IMac and MBP consistent?

How do I update the iPad to 1Password5 and have it synced with the Macs and iPod Touch and don't repeat my mistake with the iPod Touch?

Is the update of the Mac versions 1Password4 seamless or will I need to do something special to keep everything in Sync?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi @stepheng‌,

Thanks for getting back to us with precise information and questions :+1:

How do I get the vault on the iPod Touch and the DropBox based vaults on the IMac and MBP consistent?

Please make sure that both your iPod Touch and your Macs all point to the same 1Password.agilekeychain file in Dropbox.

On your Macs go to Preferences > General > Data File and you'll see the full path of your 1Password.agilekeychain.
On you iPod Touch go to Settings > Sync > Sync Service (See the screenshot below)

Please disable sync on the devices that do not point to the right 1Password.agilekeychain file and re-enable sync by using the desired one.

How do I update the iPad to 1Password5 and have it synced with the Macs and iPod Touch and don't repeat my mistake with the iPod Touch?

The best and safest way is to ensure that you have a consistent 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox and use it on your iPad after you install 1Password 5.

Is the update of the Mac versions 1Password4 seamless or will I need to do something special to keep everything in Sync?

After you've downloaded 1Password 4 for Mac, it will detect your existing data from Dropbox. Simply make sure that it uses the right 1Password.agilekeychain

If you have a consistent 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox, it is safe for you to upgrade to 1Password 4 on your Macs and to 1Password 5 on your iPad. Otherwise we need to make it consistent first.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do for you

    Cheers!

    Hi Rad,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I've checked my Macs and they both use the same 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox.

When I go to my iPod Touch it doesn't appear to be synced with anything currently so when I try to set up syncing with the Dropbox 1Password.agilekeychain I get a warning and then I get to the following screen (screenshot attached)

Is it safe to click on "Merge These Vaults Anyway" at this point in the process?

    Thanks.

    Hi @stepheng‌,

That warning appears just in case you have multiple vaults in Dropbox, so you don't accidentally merge two completely different vaults together. We have more information about that message here.

If you only have one vault in Dropbox, you can go ahead and merge. That will simply update 1Password on your device with any newer data in Dropbox (and vice versa).

If you have more questions about all that, just let us know. :)
