1PW showing window on in-browser use

Hello,

1PW/Mac has started showing the main window (which I've hidden) when I use it in Safari. I don't recall this behavior previously, can't find a preference option, and find it rather annoying. Is there a fix for this?

  • Hi @_jal,

Could you please let us know a few more details?

Ans when you say "main window", are you referring to the main app (pictured below)?

Thanks in advance for the additional info!

Yes, I am referring to that window.

Let me try again with describing the behavior I'd like to change. With 1PW running, minimize the window (Apple-M, or Window -> Minimize). In a browser (I have verified this with Safari and Chrome; likely doesn't matter), unlock the extension. The window restores from hidden to its prior position in the background.

I'm using 1PW 5.0.2, OS X 10.10.1. It is a smallish annoyance, but it does distract and cover other things I pay attention to in the background. From a UX standpoint, it seems like inexplicable behavior - why should an action in a browser change window state elsewhere for no apparent reason?

    Hi @_jal,

Thanks for the additional details. That's a bit odd, and I'm not actually able to reproduce that on my end. I made sure to lock 1Password, minimize it to the Dock, then unlock the 1Password extension in Safari (and I've tried the same thing with Chrome). I tried doing it a few different ways, and each time the extension works as expected, and the main app remains minimized in the Dock. I'm using the same version of 1Password and Mac OS.

When you unlock the 1Password extension, how exactly are you invoking it? In other words, do you click the 1Password extension icon in the browser toolbar, or the 1Password mini icon in your Mac's menu bar, or do you use the ⌘\ keyboard shortcut? Or something else? Does the same thing happen if 1Password is unlocked before trying to use the extension?

Also, does the extension still work when this happens?

    Thanks!

    Hi Drew,

Apologies for the long disappearance - holidays became rather nutty.

I generally unlock by clicking on the 1PW extension in (e.g.) Safari, and typing my password, but I just verified it also happens with ⌘\ and the menu bar menu.

If 1PW is unlocked and minimized, so that I'm selecting a login (or using ⌘), it does not happen and the window stays properly hidden.

The extension works in all cases.

About the only other thing I can think of off-hand that might be implicated is that I do have a dual monitor setup, laptop screen (MBP Retina 10,2) as well as an HP something-or-other.

  • Hi @_jal,

No worries, I hope you enjoyed the holidays.

About the only other thing I can think of off-hand that might be implicated is that I do have a dual monitor setup, laptop screen (MBP Retina 10,2) as well as an HP something-or-other.

I think that might be it. I often get hidden windows (Chrome in my case, not 1Password) opened up on secondary monitor if I focus on Chrome on the primary monitor but I haven't been able to narrow it down to anything. Can you reproduce it without the second monitor? You may have to reboot after disconnecting the second monitor to confirm this.

In addition, do you use any apps to manage your dual monitor setups such as restoring windows properly when disconnecting monitor or making it easier to move windows between monitors?

    Hi @MikeT,

Thanks for the note. Indeed, it does appear to be monitor-related, and it should have occurred to me to try that before bothering the fora. I've just only had it happen with 1PW, not with other apps. I suppose this is exhibit #873 in things no longer Just Working so well... sigh.

    Thanks for assistance,

    -j

    Hi @_jal‌

Sorry we didn't come to a better resolution. A little searching found this Apple page that you might be interested in at https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html. It's one of those things where the more people that report it the better, especially dual monitor users as I based on those I've interacted with you're a small group and you don't want it to go unnoticed.
