Problems with Retention of 1Password 5 Sync Preferences and Time Capsule Connection

Since becoming a 1Password for Mac and PC user in May, 2014 I have been syncing two Macs and two PCs to a 1 Password Sync Folder on an Apple Time Capsule over our home wifi network. I realize this is not a recommended or supported means of syncing 1 Password for Mac and PC, but until now it has worked perfectly, with no problems.

A few days ago I bought a new iMac Retina to replace my older iMac, and a new tall version Time Capsule to replace our older Time Capsule. The setup of both the iMac and the Time Capsule appeared to go well, but now I am having two problems that I think are related. Sometimes when I start up 1 Password I get a message that it cannot connect to my Time Capsule, and then when I go into my 1 Password Sync preferences I get a window asking me to set up my Sync preferences from scratch as if they had never been set up before. When I choose Sync over Wifi and then choose the 1 Password Sync Folder on my Time Capsule I get a message that 1 Password has found new information in the Sync Folder which will be merged with the existing information in my vault. If course, I don't really know what my vault is or what it does! I did find the vault location info. for AgileBits-purchased versions in the Support area, but I did not try to find it since I wouldn't know what to do when I got there.

All help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sure someone will advise me to start syncing with DropBox, but despite AgileBits' extensive assurances of unbreakable encryption I would still like to keep my my agilekeychain inside my own home network if possible. I'm hoping an AgileBits advisor can tell me how to adjust or re-install my 1 Password accounts to avoid the need to use DropBox.

    Hi @fourwheelcycle‌

With the old Time Capsule how did you everything set up, did all the of the Macs connect to the share either on boot up or when they joined the network? Do you notice any appreciable delay in the newer Time Capsule responding?

When you unlock 1Password the first thing it attempts to ensure it is synchronised. As you know, if for whatever reason the agilekeychain isn't accessible it will notify you. Now that little box should have two options, Fix and Ignore. If you attempt to fix it then you're correct, it resets the sync settings and you have to set it up again. In these cases pointing it to the agilekeychain is sufficient and don't worry about the merging method, it's mostly just trying to ensure the user is aware that if the contents of these two vaults differ it will attempt to merge - not an issue if you're definitely pointing it to the correct agilekeychain. The other button though, Ignore, that should leave your sync settings as is and attempt to sync again as and when it has been designed to.

So the first thing I'd be curious about is if when you see this message, if you click Ignore and then ensure the network share is accessible, does 1Password continue to complain? If it does, does quitting 1Password using ⌃⌘Q (keyboard shortcut for Quit 1Password and 1Password mini) and reopening it make any difference?

One thing I wasn't entirely clear on was how many machines are currently affected by this, is it just the new iMac or is the other Mac having problems too?

If you can let us know the answers to these it might help narrow down the issue.

    littlebobbytables -

All good questions! I think I may have clicked Ignore the first time I saw the problem message but then I started clicking Fix on subsequent occasions. You'd think I might have noticed the correlation between whether I clicked Ignore vs. Fix and whether my Sync Preferences remained intact or got reset to scratch....but no, I'm just a typical hopeless user and I did not think note if there was a correlation. Until you pointed it out I did not even realize A was related to B.

On your other question I can be more helpful - so far I have only noticed the problem on my new iMac. Having said that, today I mounted my Time Capsule by clicking it in my Finder window when I first booted up my iMac, and then when I later started up 1P5 for Mac it had no problem syncing.

Since it worked OK today my plan is to enjoy the holiday period and come back to this problem if and when it re-emerges in the new year!

    Hi @fourwheelcycle‌

When it comes to encryption and sync I find they can often be counterintuitive meaning reasonable assumptions don't always hold. Before I responded to your original post I played about with it to make sure I did know the actual behaviour myself

Enjoy the holidays  and do get back to us if it continues to be a nuisance. What might end up being the solution is to ensure your new iMac mounts the Time Capsule but we can look into that later. Happy festivities!
