Wifi sync Mac->iPad->Mac?

I'm using 1Password 4 on one of my Macs. I want to sync passwords with my other Mac. Apparently "Wifi Sync" can't do this.

But I have an old iPad Mini running iOS 8. If I set up Wifi Sync on that, can I sync Mac -> iPad -> Mac to get my 1Password data on my other Mac?

Is the sync omnidirectional? That is, if I update it on either Mac or the iPad, and then re-sync all around, will everybody get the newest version?

thanks!

I would believe it would be much easier to use Dropbox.

    Hi @ken_‌

You can do it but it isn't automatic which might become annoying. You would need to set up Wi-Fi Sync with one Mac, let it sync then disable Wi-Fi Sync on your iOS device and set it up to sync with the other Mac.

If you're not happy with the idea of Dropbox then Folder Sync might be preferable. The caveat is you need to handle the synchronisation part yourself using something like rsync or ChronoSync. I'm going to point you to a post I made earlier today that would apply equally to your situation.

    Hi lbt,

Sounds good, then. I don't see how it'd be annoying -- I'd only need to re-sync when I change a password, which (realistically) isn't very often.

Personally, I've not had a lot of luck with Dropbox. Often, it'll start syncing, and then just freeze. Trying to debug that, or adding yet another third-party proprietary sync service, does not sound like fun to me. Combined with the risk involved with sending all my passwords to a third-party (cloud) service, and local sync is a no-brainer for me.

I'm sure I could figure out how to set up rsync between my Macs, but that sounds a lot more annoying than just syncing through my iPad twice.

FYI, when I was looking for password storage products last month, the presence of local (non-cloud) sync is one of the reasons 1Password made my short list. I hope wi-fi sync is someday extended to direct Mac-to-Mac syncing, because that would make life even nicer for me!

    Thanks!

Follow-up question: Will I need to purchase the $10 "Pro" add-on for iOS 1Password to sync all my passwords?

The iOS page says I need the Pro package to view or edit certain types of passwords, but it's not clear if it will sync them.

    Hi @ken_,

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts here! You're right, Wi-Fi sync could use a bit of beefing up to make it a more powerful sync option, and our developers are working to make it better. I'll let them know you're keen on seeing Mac-to-Mac syncing.

Will I need to purchase the $10 "Pro" add-on for iOS 1Password to sync all my passwords?

We have an article in our User Guide that should explain all of the Pro Features, but essentially, the free basic features include the ability to create and edit Secure Notes as well as Login, Credit Card, and Identity items. You can also mark your favorite items and find them easily. We don't limit the number of items that you can save or create in the free version. The in-app purchase includes the ability to create custom fields and view the tags that you have created on 1Password for Mac or Windows. There are also a number of additional categories included, such as passports, licenses and more!

I hope this answers your question, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns.

Is this still the case with 1Password, that it won't do mac to mac sync via WiFi? I have 2 macs, 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads that I want to keep sync'd with a single vault for my wife and I.

Yes, that is the current position. You might consider something like folder sync for Mac to Mac if you don't want to use a solution like Dropbox.

    Hi @antagile,

This particular area isn't one we've made any progress in recently. So any advice you've read already still applies. For non-cloud syncing between two Macs there is Folder Sync which was originally designed with a pen/flash drive in mind. The OS X libraries allow us to be informed when a removable drive has been detached unlike network drives which are more problematic.

I've added your query as a vote to see Wi-Fi Sync between Macs and/or Windows machines.
