Safari-Browserextension Auto-Fill Problem

I have a problem with my safari-browserextension on Websites like eBay and Amazon. When i want to login into my account with the browser-extension of 1password, the login form of these website always gives me the response "false password". If i open the login in the extension and copy the password manually into the form, it works. What am I doing wrong or is it a bug of 1password in general/the safari browser-extension?

One reason this can happen is that the site has a hidden restriction on password length. If you use 1P to fill in the login for you it will fail if your password is too long on sites like that. However, if you copy and paste the password that will automatically truncate the password to the required length and the login will work.

Is there any chance that might describe the problem with those sites?

Until now, I was able to determine the problem only on the websites of Amazon and eBay. I chose a 50-character password in both cases and would like to insert them when calling the login-page automatically via the browser extension. The automatic insertion with just one click in the extension fails with "false password", but if i insert it manually, it works .

I imagine you might be meeting the problem I mentioned. Those sites may not accept 50 character passwords. You could try changing your password on one of the sites and choosing a shorter password to see if that works.

I have read the conditions for choosing a password from amazon and it was " 6-128 characters". The manually copy & paste inserted password has 50 characters and works on pages mentioned above also. Therefore, it would have to do with any mechanism of the browser-extension, because it doesn't insert the 50 characters long password correctly.

  • Hi @StereoCandle,

Can you try something for me:

    1. Open the 1Password app, go to the the 1Password Menu > Preferences > Browsers
    2. Uncheck the option for Automatically submit logins after filling
    3. Restart your browser and see if 1Password works better. You'll need to press the submit button manually as it is now disabled.

Can you tell me if it works better? Some sites do not like being submitted without any human intervention.

After doing your steps, i have to press the submit button of these sites manually, but it doesn't fix my problem. It still works just by copy & paste. Do you have another fix for me? By the way: i have the MAS-Version, if this is relevant for a solution.

  • Hi @StereoCandle,

Thanks for trying that, please check the option back on as that's not the cause.

Can you confirm what version of 1Password extension you have installed in Safari? To find out, head to your Safari's extension settings and click on 1Password on the left sidebar before it shows you the version on the right.

    I'm on version 4.2.5.

  • Hi @StereoCandle‌,

Hmm, that's unusual. I can't reproduce it with the same versions as yours.

Can you do me a favor and see if a brand new Login item also shows the same problem. This guide will explain how to manually save a separate Login with the same credentials but don't use it to update your Login but rather save it as a separate new Login: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac-kb/5/en/topic/saving-a-login-manually

Oh, that works now. Thank you, but what is gone wrong with the first Login Item?

  • Hi @StereoCandle,

That's the question we have to figure out. How old are these older items, in other words, when did you create them?

As far as I know, eBay and/or Amazon hasn't changed their design in a long time, so it shouldn't be because of the change in their login forms.

I created these items just after i bought 1password for Mac in the AppStore, so in December 2014.

  • Hi @StereoCandle,

That's not it then. I have older items from 2012 that still works on both sites without any issues.

Are they .com domains only or do you use them on different international domains, like Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk?

I log in under amazon.de and the deposited website is also amazon.de. When I call amazon.com, to me, therefore no login option is displayed in the browser extension.

  • @StereoCandle‌

Did you originally add these logins from within the main application, or did you use the browser extension to save them?

I think I used the browser extension.

  • Interesting. I'm really not sure what might be different with the new login item then, but I'm glad to hear that you were able to get it working.
