Wrong 1Password mini

I'm suddenly getting a message that the 1Password mini that is loading on my Mac is from my cloned backup drive, even when I have that drive unmounted. Needless to say, this is causing problems. The message also says to check that I only have one version of 1P installed, which is indeed the case. My version of 1P is from the Mac App Store, and what I'm describing is a very recent problem. Can you tell me what I should do, please? Thanks!

I should add that I'm running OS X10.10.1.

I don't think you should be getting the message when the backup drive is not mounted. However, there are some solutions in any event:

    1. Delete the 1P app from the backup drive and exclude the app from your backups (you can always download it).
    2. Zip the app file on the backup drive.
    3. Not recommended by AgileBits but seems to have worked for some: disable Spotlight indexing of the backup drive.

The problem occurs because Yosemite rather likes to wander freely looking for things to launch on boot up and will as a result wilfully launch the wrong version of apps that are duplicated and which launch on boot.

    Thanks @Stephen_C!

@SandyFos, as Stephen mentioned, this problem is due to a strange issue in Yosemite which causes it to open the wrong copy of 1Password mini. In this case, it's finding the other copy in your backup directory. There's not much we can do right now because OS X determines which instance of 1Password mini to run. Stephen's suggestions should help, but if not, here's something else you can try:

    • Shut down your Mac.
    • Unplug or disconnect the backup drive.
    • Restart your Mac and see if 1Password works or gives an error.
    • If it works, reconnect the backup drive.

If you need anything else, we're always glad to help!

Thanks to both of you, Stephen and Drew! I did as Drew suggested first, and 1Password launched without a problem this time. Then I went into CarbonCopyCloner and unchecked the app's name in my clone so that it won't back up again. I figure that I do have all of the information on my iPhone and iPad, so not having it in my clone probably wouldn't be more than a minor inconvenience. What confuses me is that I've been running 1Password and Yosemite for months, but this problem only reared its head as of yesterday — weird! I hope this solves the problem and things will run smoothly from now on.

Thanks again for your help and for being so quick! :D

    Hi @SandyFos‌

Don't forget that if all you did was tell CCC to not copy the application then your vault or vaults are being backed up as they all reside in a support folder in your user's Library folder. All you're literally not copying is the application itself and you can always download a copy of that from our site.

    Hi
Am having the same problem. was able to make it work by disconnecting by backup drive, but this seems like a very bogus solution. if this is a Yosemite problem, why doesn't it happen with all of my other software, that is also backup?

There must be some other solution to this.

This is a Yosemite problem and affects 1P because 1P uses the Yosemite launch process on boot (sorry, can't recall the detailed technicalities). The correct solution in your case is to exclude the 1P app from your backup and to ensure that you have no current copies of the app on your backup drive. If you do that you will not have the problem.

(Obviously there's no problem in not having the app file backed up: you can always re-download it if needed.)

    Hi @tcoates,

I'm sorry you're also running into this problem! Stephen's information is correct, unfortunately this is an issue with Yosemite opening the wrong version of 1Password mini when it finds multiple copies. This doesn't affect many apps because not many apps are running two separate components at the same time. This is something Apple will need to fix in the OS, and our developers have contacted them about it.

I agree, disconnecting your backup drive isn't an ideal solution! As an alternative, you can delete any backup copies of the 1Password app from your backup drive, and (if possible) exclude the 1Password app from future backups. Your 1Password data will still be backed up, and you can re-download the app later if necessary.

If you're curious for some additional, more technical information about this problem and why it happens, please check out the posts here and here (both are from the same discussion).

If you have more questions about that, please let us know!
