share passwords with iMessage

Hi all,
I need to share some passwords with my wife. Is the share option combined with iMessage a good way?
I know that iMessage is encrypted, but I'm looking for some more info on what exactly is shared in the message? Is this a plain text password or is it encoded in some way so that it can only be deciphered by the 1password software on my wife's iPhone? Does the encryption of iMessage offer any additional value/safety over email?
Thanks for the help!

I have done this, but just make sure it your wife you're messaging. Now that i have 1Password on my Mac, we have both my wifes and mine vaults on it and very easy to share passwords.

I don't see any issues with iMessage persoanlly, and it is encrypted. Too bad we couldn't share password using AirDrop between iPhones.

  • 1password items that are shared are obfuscated text. That means that if the data were on screen and someone casually walked by, they couldn't read it, but it's trivial for someone who knew what they were doing, so it should be treated as if it were plain text.

So sending through iMessage is fairly safe, but remember that iMessage will fall back to SMS if there is a connectivity problem. I believe you can set a contact to not fall back to SMS if you like, but be sure the message was sent in blue (iMessage) and not green (SMS).

And as @prime said, double check you are sending to the correct recipient.

Regarding AirDrop - it is something we are looking into.
