What is the right "upgrade" path?

Our family has (1) mid-2007 iMac on Yosemite, (1) new Retina iMac on Yosemite, (1) Macbook Pro to be updated to Yosemite, (2) iPhone 5's on latest release, (1) iPad 2 on latest release, and (1) iPad retina on latest release. I started with 1Password purchased from AgileBits in 2011 on my 07 iMac and on my Macbook. I have had v4 since it has been available. I purchased and added 1Password on my iPhone and iPad from the Apple Store. I believe they are v5.2.

I want to be on v5 on all devices and sync with iCloud. Per what I read, I understand I must be on 1Password from the Apple Store, where the cost is listed as $49.99. Do I lose my original investment and have to buy again? Do I need to purchase once or three times, one for each Mac?

I am not sure how to proceed. My primary vault is on my iMac, and I would like to initially replicate it to all other devices. 1Password has never been installed on my wife's iMac (now the new Retina model).

I have read what I could find, but I am still a bit confused.

Thanks for your help.

The refund window from AgileBits is 30 days, so I'm afraid that you will indeed have to purchase another license from the Mac App Store for those Macs if you think iCloud is that important to you. Your version 4 license gives you the rights to a free upgrade to version 5 on the AgileBits web store, though, so there is a noticeable savings to sticking with that license. And the latest revisions of the license terms from the AgileBits store make a single user license cover as many as six family members living in the same household. That should cover all those Macs, I think. I've been more than happy with Dropbox sync and haven't thought it worth the money to pay for another license just to be able to use iCloud, but I recognize this is a personal decision, so you may not agree.

If you do buy another license for the Macs from the Mac App Store, it is eligible for Family Sharing, so if you set up a family group, everyone in the group (as many as six members) can use 1Password 5 with a single purchase. So the direct answer to your question about how many licenses you need to buy is one with Family Sharing. However, if you don't set up family sharing, the only way to avoid paying for each user is for everyone to use the same Apple ID for purchases in the Apple app stores.

One thing to remember about the licenses is that a user can install 1Password on as many Macs as they use themselves. You haven't said how many family members use those three Macs, but that's likely a nonissue for you. I'm confident in any case that the at most, you need to purchase one license - or none if you find yourself willing to move to Dropbox syncing.

You don't say how many people need the iOS version. You probably have noticed that version 5 it is free to download and use the basic features as long as you like. So there is a chance that no one needs to buy the iOS version at all. But if folks want the more advanced Pro features, they need to be purchased through an in-app purchase while in the iOS version. Unfortunately, Apple chose not to make in-app purchases eligible for Family Sharing, so everyone who wants the Pro features will need to pay separately, unless they share the same Apple ID for purchase from Apple.

Thank you @hawkmoth and Megan. I decided to go the iCloud route. Everything is good now.

I apologise the solution in the end required another purchase but I hope you're happy with 1Password and what sounds like working iCloud syncing @miller.photo

Thank you all so much for this explanation on the licensing for use by one individual on multiple computers! I am purchasing a new iMac this week and wondered if I had to purchase a new license in order to install 1Password on it and retain 1Password on my old MacBook Pro. I am the only Mac user in my "Family Sharing group." This answered my question wonderfully. By the way, I am happily using the Mac, Windows, and iOS versions of 1Password with DropBox sync. Thank you so much for the wonderful product! It would be worth purchasing another license.

@hawkmoth has done a wonderful job of explaining the licences as even when pain is taken to try and simplify them there is always a way to make it seem complex. We love to hear from our users and it sounds like you're definitely a user @chuckles83  I hope 1Password continues to serve you well going forward!
