Followed mac instructions to reset forgotten master password: turned off file vault, clicked users and groups - then didn't see "Open Users & Groups preferences for me" Then couldn't follow directions:
"Log in to your account. In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.

Enter an Apple ID and password, then click Reset Password."
Help. I can't start up my 1Password. By the way, I got stuck with this password when I downloaded sample for free. Uninstalled (I thought) and then bought program. Same password stuck with new download that was a purchase and I can't remember.

If you truly cannot remember your master password, you will need to start over. Here are the instructions for Starting over. It sounds to me like you didn't get everything when you tried to uninstall. Try these directions and let us know how it goes.

  • Hi @lauren94127,

Followed mac instructions to reset forgotten master password: turned off file vault, clicked users and groups - then didn't see "Open Users & Groups preferences for me" Then couldn't follow directions:

That's the guide for resetting the OS X account, it is not related to 1Password.

This guide is the one you need: https://guides.agilebits.com/1password-mac-kb/5/en/topic/starting-over

To reset your data, you just have to move your data files out of the 1Password directory.

Uninstalled (I thought) and then bought program.

Your 1Password data files are not removed when you uninstall 1Password. Reinstalling 1Password will detect the existing data files and automatically use it by default.

Please let me know if the guide didn't work. If it didn't work, can you tell me if you downloaded the trial version from our website and then bought 1Password at Apple's Mac App Store?

I'm having a similar problem. Couldn't remember my master password, so started again (as was recommended on one of these forums). Got it up and running on my iPhone just fine with the new Vault, and love the system. Problem is, when I bought the Mac version, and tried to access my vault, it's asking for my master password - the one I have forgotten! Since I only have one apple id, and the system recognises my initial master password which I can't remember, I can't synch what I now have on my iPhone to the Mac, rendering the purchase price wasted. Can anyone help? Apparently I can't even email agilebits - I have to use these forums!???

In fact I have just realised, I can't even open 1Password on my Mac because it has synched me to the old vault - the one I don't know the password for! AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH

It's OK, I solved it myself

Well I'm sorry you had that period of frustration @gigglewiggle but also heartened to hear that you've managed to resolve it and are now (at a guess) happily syncing a new vault over your different devices. May I suggest taking the time to unlock your vault on your Mac every day, the key to a remembering a long and complex Master Password is through rote learning (repetition) and it does work. I do love Touch ID on my iPhone but can also see the perils of it if it was all I needed to use for a prolonged period of time.
