Minor Usability Improvement

One minor annoyance is the way 1Password mini pops up in random places. Some times it shows up at the menu bar and other times, it shows up near the username field on the form you're trying to log into. The annoyance comes from the mouse pointer moving the selection which means you can't always leave the mouse pointer in a safe place so it doesn't affect the selection.

Is there currently a way to change this behavior? I would love to be able to select always pop up on the menu bar.

What version are you running @ZamboniMan? I dragged my 1Password mini menu to the top right hand corner and that's where it always opens for me when I use the ⌥⌘\ keyboard shortcut. I use the shortcut so much I don't even keep the 1Password icon in my menu bar now.

When 1Password Mini pops up, it won't let me drag it anywhere. I always use the shortcut. It is just that when the popup window appears in different places the selected item changes to the current mouse position.

    For example,

    • Open a new browser tab.
    • Use the CMD-\ shortcut to bring up 1Pasword mini.
    • Start typing the first couple of characters of the site you want to open.

If you have several items in different categories that start with the same characters, the selected item may be an identity or secure note instead of the login item you were hoping for if your mouse is sitting right on top of it so you have to move the selection back up to the login item you were hoping for from somewhere further down the list.

Another way around this would be to provide options so a user can choose to only display certain categories during a search but I'd rather have a consistent location on the screen than a pop up that bounces from one location to another.

    Hi @ZamboniMan,

    1. Use ⌘\ to bring up the 1Password mini menu.
    2. Move the cursor to the top of the menu within just a few pixels, the drag area seems pretty small but it is there. As an example the small space above the vault icon can be used.

    Does that work for you?

The drag areas must be too small for me to see or hit. I can't get it to work.

    Hi @ZamboniMan,

Just as a quick sanity check, can I ask what version of OS X and 1Password you're running please. Maybe there is something specific going on there.

Sorry, I did miss that @ZamboniMan. I don't know what to say, if you drag the menu it does stick compared to the floating mode it kind of has otherwise. I'm on a MacBook so using the slightly trickier trackpad. Even so, if I use the physical left click of the trackpad I can drag the menu around. The grey space between the vault icon and the letter S in Search xxx Vault could make a good area to try with as there is a little more area there to work with.

I'm also using the trackpad on a Macbook Air.

Finally got it to move and it appears to be sticky across different sites.

    Thank you.

  • I'm glad you got it working better now. On behalf of littlebobbytables, you're welcome.

We do need to figure out how to improve the dragging area in our mini and will work on this.

I would suggest supporting the three finger swipe anywhere on the search bar section to move the window. Most other Mac apps will move the window with a three finger swipe anywhere in the title bar.

  • Thanks for the suggestion! :)
