Sharing Between Family Members

Our father/Mom's husband died last month. She is very computer literate but with memory issues, so as we go and try to find/change all of their passwords for various accounts, we would like to purchase a password program to store all of this data, and including credit cards, etc. We know we are able to share over Mom's various devices (e.g. computer, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but is it possible for each of us sons and daughters to also share, so that we are able to help with passwords/sign ons when typed wrong or forgotten, or record changes? Yes, means that multiple individuals would have access to primary account, but better than current situation where either all was written or put into text files on computer, or wasn't even written down (and unfortunately went with Dad).

If you sync with Dropbox, you could share the vault with everyone. I think that's your best bet. You can only share with iCloud if everyone is using the same Apple ID, which I'm betting won't cover everyone in the family.

You are correct, we do not share the same iCloud ID, and would care not to. I do not use Dropbox, how would this work? And thank you for the quick response.

Look here, in the User Guide.

Edit: As I think about this, I'm not sure that page covers sharing. That might be something for Dropbox to handle. I'm on shaky ground here, but my recollection of sharing over Dropbox is that in Dropbox itself you right click on the file while in your Dropbox folder and select the option to share the link. But please be sure to check for sure. I am sure you can accomplish your goal, though.

    Hi @RJTJr,

I'm very sorry to hear about your father! It must be difficult for your mother to track down all the passwords that are stored in different places, so I'm sure she appreciates your help with this.

It looks like hawkmoth has given you some great information for getting this all set up. Basically, your mother needs to share her vault with you via Dropbox. We have information on how to do that in this User Guide article.

Once she shares her vault with you, you'll be able to add that vault to 1Password on your own computers/devices. If you have any questions about that, just let us know - we're always happy to help! :)

I'm sorry for you loss, too. I have just a hint that may help you find passwords which you think are lost. If your father used a Mac see if you can access the Keychain using the Keychain Access utility. You may find some sites and passwords there.

The other thing to check (and you've probably thought of it already) is any browser your father used on his machine. Many of them store (discoverable) passwords.

To Hawkmoth, Drew_AG and Stephen_C, thank you for your responses, input and condolences. Fortunately I did turn on Keychain late last year, and have been able to retrieve some passwords, but not all, such as his wireless printer which appears on the Wi-Fi networks, but we'll be doggoned if we're able to get this password. I am reading through the manual, and we'll make a decision tonight (as a family we're moving together to take care of Mom) to invest in 1Password. I will also try the tip of tip on the growers.
