How to have 1Password backup to Apple iCloud
I've purchased 1Password5 from your website awhile ago. I've learned since then if I purchased 1Password 5 from the Apple store for my iMac, I would have been able to download a copy of my passwords from iCloud onto my new iMac instead of figuring out which files to copy over from the old machine to the new machine. Is this true ? If so to make my life easier would I qualify for a discount since i already purchased 1Password 5 for OS X

Unfortunately, due to restrictions by Apple, the webstore version cannot do iCloud sync, and there is no mechanism to give a discount when buying from Apple's App Store. If you had bought less than thirty days ago, Agile would have given you a refund.
That said, very many people use Dropbox sync rather than iCloud. And if you are primarily interested in a one-off copy from an old machine to a new one, there is folder sync.

Hi @kpq8702,
Unfortunately unless you mean "within the last month or so" when you say "awhile ago," there's not much we can do there.
The good news is that iCloud is only one of our sync methods though. I personally use Dropbox, even though I'm using the App Store version of the app. Dropbox accounts are free, and I use it for all sorts of things other than just 1Password.
I recommend you setup something via Dropbox or another sync solution via Folder Sync.
I hope this helps.

Hi Rick, If I decide to purchase another 1Password 5 license would I be able to copy my existing logons to the new license and then be able to backup to Apple's iCloud? I kinda don't trust the security around Dropbox especially after reading the security breach reports awhile back. Let me know if I need to purchase from the Agile web store to make this all happen, thanks.

The Agile web store version does not include iCloud, due to restrictions by Apple. So if you have it from there, and really want iCloud you would have to buy again from Apple's App Store. If you are just wondering about using on more than one Mac, there is no need to make another purchase, the same license (Agile version) or Apple ID (App Store version) is fine for both machines.
If you do move from Agile to Apple versions, your logins can be transferred fairly easily.

Please also note that 1P's iCloud sync is not really quite the same as backup. You use iCloud to sync 1P data between a Mac and an iOS device (for example). That really doesn't obviate the need to have proper backups of your 1P data on your Mac (using Time Machine or whatever backup method you prefer). No doubt you're aware of that but I thought it worth stressing.

Hi @kpq8702,
If you did decide to go down that route then when you launch 1Password (MAS) for the first time on the same machine running the 1Password (AWS) version it would import your vault. We actually have a page on this, Migrating to the Mac App Store version.
There are a couple of points I'd like to address if I may.
- Sync isn't really backup. It's merely the latest copy of your vault so that multiple devices and machines can all stay synchronised. 1Password does perform backups to your local drive spanning potentially months so if something has gone wrong you can return to a previous point in time. Like everything else held on your local drive though, if the drive becomes responsive for any reason everything is lost. That's why the likes Time Machine is a good idea.
- Your vault is never in an unencrypted state when it exists on either Dropbox or iCloud. Assuming a solid Master Password, you would have plenty of time to change all of your passwords with a few decades to spare should the worst happen and somebody somehow gains access to your sync data. The strength of our encryption lies in how long it would take to brute force the decryption as we assume the worst case of somebody gaining access.
We can help you with the files you need to copy across as well if all you want to do is a onetime transfer from an old machine to a new one. I just hope you don't feel forced to make this purchase.

Hi @kpq8702,
I've merged a couple of your threads as they were regarding the same topic. If you have any unanswered queries please do let us know.

Folks, Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression if you purchase 1Password 5 from Apple App Store then you would be able to pull down your most recent copy of your saved passwords from within 1Password if your iMac and your external hard drive with Time Machine backups are stolen. True or not true ?

@kpq8702 - True, if you install another copy on another Mac, answer the question about pervious use in the affirmative, and log in to your iCloud account with the same Apple ID as you used when you originally sorted your data there. That isn't quite that same as a conventional backup, which you would have made with a backup solution like Time Machine or an off site solution, which would allow you to restore your data by restoring them from that backup. It's probably a subtle difference, in my view, and perhaps a distinction without a practical difference for many users. But that's my opinion. Others may weigh in with a different view.

Hi @kpq8702,
You can kickstart a new machine using sync data, I just wanted to highlight the difference between syncing and backing up. As hawkmoth has said, the difference may not mean much to many but I felt it should be said. For example, do something foolish on one machine and syncing will replicate that mistake to all the others. Backups though won't be affected in such a situation and may prove useful.
