trouble getting started with 1password

First of all, I assumed 1password is secure, but it shows what I have in "Secure" notes even when I'm signed out! Why have a secure note!
This is what I've done: I have a new 1Password account (is it free? didn't see anything on that). Fine. The icon shows up on my (macbook pro) dock and the mini version of 1password is up there in the top vertical menu bar. Fine. After logging in to 1password, I entered a few initial items like my social security number, my visa account info, some general notes, and a second email account I have. Then I closed out to see how it looked. But, without having to use my master password, I can see all kinds of things I want to have hidden. For instance, in my visa listing the only thing shown as a series of dots is the password. But, I have security questions listed there and they can be read by anyone. Why? Shouldn't it just have a listing of (in this case) the words: social security number, visa account, secure notes, email account? Thank you.

Let's take this slowly and deal with one thing at a time. When you say you "closed" 1P what did you actually do? If it's not actually locked it's going to open again without requiring your master password. Take a look at this knowledge base article which will help you with the security settings.

Although you've not told us what version of 1P you're using I'm assuming it's 1P4 or 1P5. From where did you download it: the Mac App Store or the AgileBits store? I suspect it was the latter as you refer to a "free" version. The download from the AgileBits store will run as a trial version for 30 days after which you'll still have access to data you have saved but you won't be able to edit it or add any new data. So the app is not "free" but merely a trial version.

    Hi @maryking,

It sounds like Stephen has already given you some great information here!

Just to clarify: Closing the 1Password app is not the same as locking it. This allows you to use 1Password mini or the 1Password browser extension without needing to open the full 1Password app. The link from Stephen about the security settings will help you adjust when 1Password automatically locks itself. You can also lock 1Password at any time from the main app, 1Password mini, or the 1Password extension. Or you can use the ^⌥⌘L keyboard shortcut (Control-Option-Command-L) at any time to lock 1Password.

When 1Password is unlocked, password and PIN fields are concealed by showing dots, by default. To temporarily see the passwords/PINs, hold down the Option key on your keyboard (the passwords will be concealed again as soon as you release the Option key). Or if you want to always be able to see your passwords & PINs instead of the dots, go to the View menu in 1Password and disable the option for Conceal Passwords.

If you have more questions, please let us know! :)
