Problem with Sync Configuration between Mac and IOS
I tryed to find the answers on the web but now i give up and asking you for support.
I use OS X 10.10.2 with the latest 1password Versions (from App Store).
My goal is in some way to sync a secondary vault with my iOS mobile devices.
After my purchase of your nice peace of software i unfortunately realized that
a sync by wifi (wich is my preferred way) does not allow to exclude the primary vault.
Basicly i am understanding if this is related to some technical limitations even though
this is really painful for me to live with it. I Hope the future will solve this in an update.
My first question is ... How do i make sure that my 1password iOS Pro Version is activated when i start with a synced vault?
An other headache result in the question how i make sure that ONLY a secondary vault will be synced between
my iOS devices and my Mac Computer? Simple i don't want to share all data i stored in 1 password on my Mac.
I really trust in 1password and the experience by the people behind it but i just feel better not store all on mobile devices.
(typically this devices can be lost somewhere or stolen and i sleep then a lot better if this sometimes happens).
Is the currently any way to do an automatic sync in same way between primary and secondary vaults on the same System?
For example - everything within folder X from primary vault will be sync to defined secondary vaults?
Best regards from Germany!

Hi @steaven,
I'm sorry you weren't able to find the answers on our website! I'll do my best to clear things up and answer your questions:
After my purchase of your nice peace of software i unfortunately realized that
a sync by wifi (wich is my preferred way) does not allow to exclude the primary vault. That's correct - the Primary vault will always be synced when syncing via Wi-Fi (although you can choose which secondary vaults will sync). Hopefully we'll be able to change this at some point, but my understanding is that there are some technical challenges that would need to be overcome, and I can't make any promises about if/when that will happen.
How do i make sure that my 1password iOS Pro Version is activated when i start with a synced vault?
Are you asking how to check if Pro Features are unlocked in 1Password 5 for iOS? To do that, open 1Password on your iOS device and go to Settings > Pro Features. If the Pro Features are unlocked, you'll see a "Thank you" message, and it will say "Purchased". Alternately, you can simply look at the row of tabs at the bottom of 1Password - if you have an Organize tab, then you have Pro Features unlocked.
An other headache result in the question how i make sure that ONLY a secondary vault will be synced between
my iOS devices and my Mac Computer? Simple i don't want to share all data i stored in 1 password on my Mac.You can do this using Dropbox sync for your secondary vault. When you set up 1Password 5 on your iOS device, you'll be able to choose the secondary vault in your Dropbox account.
Is the currently any way to do an automatic sync in same way between primary and secondary vaults on the same System?
For example - everything within folder X from primary vault will be sync to defined secondary vaults?
No, it's not currently possible to selectively sync a single folder (or individual items) between two different vaults. You can copy individual items from one vault to another (using 1Password for Mac) but changes to one copy won't sync to the other.
I hope this helps to answer your questions, but please let us know if you need anything else! :)

Hello Drew_AG
I am more or less frustrated that i am unable to configure my needs within 1password.
Please tell me (if possible step by step or with a point to an howto) what
options i have to setup my goal as close as possible. Which options do
i have to share only contents from additional (secondary) vaults to my mobile devices? Will it work if i create on mobile devices a new primary
vault and add secondary vaults to it from dropbox? An other option i considered is simple not using the primary vault and save OS X specific
data on my mac to an other secondary vault (which won't be synced).BUT when i have to use on all devices the same master password (because the
primary vault is transferred through the world) its not wanted too. What can't be done?
I never expected so much problems using features which are there
little bit frustrating ... :-(0 -
Hi @steaven,
I'm sorry this has been so frustrating for you! And I apologize if I wasn't clear enough about how to set this up in my last message. I can certainly give you more specific steps for that.
To sync only a secondary vault from your Mac to your iOS devices, you'll need to use Dropbox sync. If you don't already have a Dropbox account, you can install Dropbox on your Mac, and the Dropbox app will walk you through the steps to create a new account.
Once you have Dropbox set up, follow these steps to set up Dropbox sync for the secondary vault in 1Password:
- On your Mac, open 1Password and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences.
- Choose the Sync tab, and select your secondary vault under Vaults
- Select Dropbox from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu.
- Click the Choose button, then choose your main Dropbox folder (and click Open).
- Click Create New to create a copy of that vault in Dropbox.
This will create a new .agilekeychain file in the Dropbox/1Password/ folder, which will be named after your vault. For example, if the secondary vault is called "test" the new keychain will be "test.agilekeychain".
To sync that vault with 1Password on your iOS device(s):
- Install 1Password on your iOS device, then open it.
- Tap Sync existing vault, then tap Sync with Dropbox.
- Authorize Dropbox (if the Dropbox app is not installed, you'll need to enter the email address and password for your Dropbox account).
- Choose your secondary vault's .agilekeychain file in Dropbox, and enter your master password for that vault.
- Allow the sync to complete.
Let us know how it all goes, and you have any questions about that. Thanks!

I did mostly what you explain here but always something not work.
I have my primary vault on my Mac and added a secondary one there.
Somewhere i read (guess here in this forum but not sure) that beginnen with a sync only works if it include the primary vault. This means only sync a secondary vault with dropbox can't work? Right or did i understand something wrong?
So i created for testing a new vault in iOS and then tried to add with sync from dropbox the secondary vault.
Within iOS no secondary vault will be created. Is it needed to do manual?
1password on iOS give the Message "1Password will no longer sync because no sync source was found for profile".At the same time 1password on my Mac inform about a problem and by checking the options then sync is disabled.
It drives me crazy because i am unable to understand whats exactly wrong.
Informations about setting it up are for me more or less mystic. I work with computers around 15 years and it shouldn't be so hard using a software.
What is the best time to get in contact with you or an other support person?
All i tried out result in other problems ...

By the way please understand me wrong. Imho 1password is good organized and using it is mostly explained
by it self. Only the error messages or guides how to solve problems are sometimes not proper organized.Specific messages that explain the problem and/or send customers to FAQ sites is what i am currently missing.

Hi @steaven,
To make sure I understand, it sounds like you created a secondary vault in 1Password on your Mac, set up Dropbox sync for that vault, set up 1Password as a new user on iOS (which would create a new, empty vault) and set that up to sync with the new keychain file in Dropbox. Is that correct?
If so, the error messages you described can happen if the keychain file hasn't completely uploaded to the Dropbox servers when you try to sync with it on iOS. If that's the problem, I apologize because I should have mentioned that once you set up Dropbox sync for that vault on your Mac, you'll need to allow Dropbox to finish uploading the keychain first. But the good news is that, assuming that's the problem, it's easy to fix:
First, you simply need to go to the Dropbox/1Password/ folder on your Mac, and make sure you see a green circle with a check next to your keychain file. If you do, that means it's finished uploading, and you can re-enable Dropbox sync:
On your Mac:
- Open 1Password and go to the menu for 1Password > Preferences.
- Choose the Sync tab, and select your secondary vault under Vaults
- Select Dropbox from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu.
- Click the Choose button, then choose your keychain file in Dropbox/1Password/ (and click Open).
- Click Merge with Existing to re-enable the sync.
On your iOS device:
- Open 1Password and go to Settings > Sync > Start Syncing.
- Choose Sync with Dropbox.
- When you see your Dropbox account name, tap on the name (do not tap on the 'i' icon).
- Choose your .agilekeychain file in Dropbox.
- If you see a Vault Mismatch message, tap More Info and then tap Merge These Vaults Anyway.
- Allow Dropbox to complete the sync.
That should get everything working as expected. Sorry for the confusion about that! To answer your other questions:
Somewhere i read (guess here in this forum but not sure) that beginnen with a sync only works if it include the primary vault. This means only sync a secondary vault with dropbox can't work? Right or did i understand something wrong?
It sounds like you're referring to Wi-Fi sync. You can use Wi-Fi sync for secondary vaults, but it will also have to sync the Primary vault. That's different than Dropbox sync. With Dropbox sync, you can choose to sync only your secondary vault.
What is the best time to get in contact with you or an other support person?
These forums are public, and we have other members of our support team who help out here as well, so even if I'm not around to respond to you, the others here are able to help out. There's no specific time, you can reply here any time you want. We try to answer as soon as we can, but we generally answer posts in the forums in the order they are received.
Please let us know how it all goes. If you're still having trouble syncing your secondary vault, I'm sure we'll be able to help solve the problem. Thanks!

Hi @Drew_AG,
Your assumption was absolutely correct. The keychain file was always complete uploaded to my dropbox
before i enabled sync in 1Password. However with your last informations posted here it works fine now :)Maybe i was simple to careful because 1Password the setup process for sync give me clear
precise instructions. I also feared that my Mac primary vault maybe will be replaced with the empty
vault from my mobile iOS device. Fortunately it works now as expected. But there is something what i can't understand. I try to explain that behavior as good as possible.
My Macs 1Password holds the primary (M) and one secondary vault (M1).
For both i used different passwords but the secondary (vault M1) was more easy to enter on iOS.On my Iphone i created as a new user only a primary vault (ios) and used a different password too.
Now i expected that after the sync it simply adds the secondary vault (ios1) to my iOS device.Very strange was for me to realize that 1Password on iOS asked me for the correct password from
my Macs secondary vault (M1) BUT after a complete sync i had to use the password defined
on primary vault (iOS). The password that i used to start as a new user on my iOS device. It is very confusing why i don't have to use the password defined from the Macs secondary vault
after sync to access 1Password iOS. An explanation is highly welcome. Is this behavior from 1Password correctly and destined or is there maybe an error?
Please NOTE: This Solution how it works (after setup correctly) is for my self perfekt.
I only want to know a little bit more about it for a better understanding.I will later post with some more informations and feedback but for now i stop here and
add a few questions i still have. Please answer them too.Is it possible that sync in dropbox not work with an other path as Dropbox/1Password/ ?
Within my first try i used others but dropbox on iOS always found them.Is there anything additional to know for setup sync between Mac and 1Password on Android?
I have a Kindle Fire Tablet and want to use 1Password there too.Have a nice day!

Hi @steaven,
I'm happy to hear the sync is working correctly now! :)
To answer your other questions:
On my Iphone i created as a new user only a primary vault (ios) and used a different password too.
This is actually expected behavior, because each vault was created separately (and with different master passwords) before you synced them together. So in this case, your vault in Dropbox actually still has the same master password as the secondary vault on your Mac, but your vault in 1Password for iOS still has the same master password as when you created it during the setup. (If you had chosen to sync with your vault in Dropbox when setting up 1Password for iOS, it would use the same master password.) Now that those vaults are syncing with each other, a future change to the master password on one will sync to the other.
If you'd like to change the master password on iOS to match the secondary vault on your Mac (and in Dropbox), open 1Password for iOS and go to Settings > Security > Change Master Password.
Is it possible that sync in dropbox not work with an other path as Dropbox/1Password/ ?
Within my first try i used others but dropbox on iOS always found them. When setting up Dropbox sync in 1Password for Mac, the default location for a new .agilekeychain file is in Dropbox/1Password/. However, you can choose to create that keychain in a different location in Dropbox if you want, and 1Password for iOS will be able to find it when setting up Dropbox sync on the iOS device.
If you want to change the location of your existing keychain file in Dropbox, make sure you disable Dropbox sync for that vault on your Mac and iOS device first. Then you can move the keychain to another location in Dropbox, and then choose that keychain file when you re-enable Dropbox sync for that vault on Mac and iOS.
Is there anything additional to know for setup sync between Mac and 1Password on Android?
To sync 1Password 4 for Android with your existing vault in Dropbox, please make sure you follow these steps.
I have a Kindle Fire Tablet and want to use 1Password there too.
Unfortunately, 1Password 4 for Android is not yet supported on Kindle devices. 1Password 4 has been developed for and tested on a variety of devices that natively run Android OS. However, Amazon's Fire OS has some significant differences from Android OS, and due to those differences, 1Password 4 for Android will not work as intended on a Kindle Fire. If we support Kindle in the future, it will most likely require a separate version of 1Password.
We do have an old 1Password Reader app for Android which is available through the Amazon App Store at this link. If you'd like to try that version and need help with it, we have a 1Password Reader for Android forum which should be helpful for you.
If I've missed any of your questions, please let me know. I hope this helps! :)

Thanks for your great elaboration about the handling with
master passwords. I like this (expected) behavior absolutely. In my other trys i used different folders in dropbox before i got from you
the right informations here in the forum. The vaults where always
found but you pointed to Dropbox/1Password/ so i used the path too.Only the sync didn't worked before i asked here. However all is fine now.
Kindle isn't supported? Well it maybe surprise you ...
On my Kindle Fire 7 HD with FireOS 4 works the latest 1Password
Version from Google Play using sync without any known problems. If required, a separate version of 1Password is welcome.
Last question for now ... is there any recommended way to backup
1Password on mobile devices with an easy way to restore?Have a nice day :)

Hi @steaven,
I confess, I'm not an Android user myself but I was under the impression that a standard Kindle Fire couldn't access Google Play. I've seen instructions for the case if you've rooted your tablet but out of the box?
Anyway, regarding the backup query. I suspect the easiest way to keep backups is probably through your Mac based on my knowledge of the two platforms. If your tablet is in sync with your Mac using Dropbox then the backups created on your Mac will include everything from your tablet. The Mac has the advantage that it keeps around 50 backups meaning you can revert to a particular point in time while mobile devices typically have smaller storage space. Obviously we hope you'd never need such a feature but it's handy knowing it's there. Generally though, if something was to happen to your copy of 1Password for Android, syncing a fresh copy to Dropbox is usually enough.
Now of course if I'm missed what you're trying to cover with the query please do let us know.

That is correct. By default Kindle users can't access Google Play. Generally it is a good idea to obtain a Fastboot Cable often known as Kindle Factory Cable. This cable allows Kindle users to connect over ADB with a Terminal to access the tablet in any state. If something went wrong its possible to flash the normal Android Software (FireOS) to "unbrink" tablet. I mean it is nearly always possible to restore and return to factory defaults.
Of course, through ADB with Fastboot enabled its possible to run console / shell scripts for backups, installing apps and much more.
Only running other custom rom Android Images like cyanogenmod works not on all hardware versions and is IMHO a painful setup process. I use my Kindle, mostly for Movies and reading ebooks. So the default Firmware is enough for me.
I would never recommend to use 1Password on a rooted device with all password data.
My iOS devices (productive in use) were never jailbraked for security reasons in the trust that Apple do their job perfect :)
About my 1Password Backup Questions ...
It would be nice if i can safe the required steps to configure 1password it again if I lost a device i must reset to factory defaults. Is it possible to make a full backup and restore it if needed without setup again on mobile devices? Do ITunes cover that job within device backups, for example?

Hi @steaven,
If we're talking about an iOS device then you have two routes for a full device backup. I know for certain that iTunes is meant to create a full backup. Why the emphasis? we have heard of instances where a restore doesn't seem to restore everything but there are two points here 1. it isn't a common issue, thankfully it seems to be infrequent and 2. sometimes restoring again from the exact same backup works suggesting the breakdown is somewhere in the restoration. I'm on my 3rd iPhone now and each time I've restored the final back from the old one to the new iPhone, all without any hitches. Even when the restoration hasn't been perfect it's still restoring almost everything but we hear about it because it isn't restoring the user's vault. If you have your vault on other devices this isn't much of an issue but you can understand how this could be a crippling blow to somebody who only has the vault on their device.
The other route for a full device backup is via iCloud (I believe). I'm not a big cloud user myself but it should perform the same duties as iTunes. For more information on this here is an Apple KB on the topic, iCloud: iCloud storage and backup overview and here is the key part
you can easily set up a new device or restore information on one you already have
I'm glad Apple still support the local option via iTunes but if you sync your iOS device over Wi-Fi, which also does the backing up automatically, keep an eye on when the last backup was created. Bonjour doesn't seem to work quite as well as Apple might want us to believe and I often find it hasn't created a backup in a couple of weeks when it should be roughly every two days given my setup. I find the easiest way to resolve it is to reboot the iOS device/restart iTunes to force Bonjour to communicate properly again. That doesn't apply if you connect via USB.
Does that help at all?
