Cannot Sync to DropBox following restore
Although 1Password had been smooth for years, since I had to restore my logins from a locally stored backup, I can no longer sync with Dropbox. On the Dropbox Sync page, I find the relevant 1Password.agilekeychain but when I press "Continue", nothing happens.
I tried removing 1Password and reinstalling it. I was able successfully to restore all my logins but can't sync. iOS devices are syncing to the keychain file in Dropbox.
Please HELP!
I am running a MacBook Air with Yosemite 10.10.3, 1 Password 5.1 from the Mac App Store.

@tokyo_a: I'm sorry you're having sync issues! Just to make sure we're on the same page, do you have the Dropbox app installed and running on your Mac? Double-check that, as that could be causing some trouble for you.
If, however, you DO have Dropbox installed, running, and your Dropbox folder is fully sync'd, locate the
1Password.agilekeychain
in Dropbox using Finder and double-click it. 1Password should prompt you to open the vault, and then just make sure that 1Password is set up to sync data using Dropbox from then on.I hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out! :)

Thanks so much, Brenty.
I do have the Dropbox app installed and running on my Mac. It is fully syncing with files in general.I double clicked the 1Password.agilekeychain in Dropbox. It created a new vault, so now I have two vaults. The new one (from Dropbox) is the one that is syncing to my iPhone and IPad Air2.
When I go to 1Password Preferences/Sync and I try to Sync with DropBox (either vault), I choose the 1Password.agilekeychain file in the dropdown menu, press "Continue" and nothing happens. I can't sync either the existing local vault or the new vault that was launched with Dropbox. As an aside, although I don't care about syncing with iCloud, I don't have the option of syncing the new vault with iCloud. I saw some other users having that problem.
Please advise. Many thanks.

Hi @tokyo_a,
I'm wondering if there might be some confusion over how to set up Dropbox sync, because you shouldn't need to click a Continue button. When choosing Dropbox sync for a vault in 1Password, a dropdown window will ask you to "Click here to find the Dropbox folder..." and although there is a Continue button at the bottom, it is grayed out (i.e. non-functional). Once you click the Choose button and select the .agilekeychain file from Dropbox, you should then see a Merge with Existing button that you'll need to click to complete the sync setup.
Now, when you double-click the .agilekeychain file in Dropbox to create a new vault in 1Password, Dropbox sync is automatically enabled for that new vault so you don't need to do anything else to set that up. However, it sounds like you need to sync your Primary vault with that keychain in Dropbox, and don't need to have the secondary vault in 1Password. You should be able to fix it all up by following these steps:
- Open 1Password and switch to the secondary vault by going to the menu for 1Password > Switch to Vault > [vault name].
- Go to the menu for 1Password > Delete [vault name] Vault and confirm you want to delete it.
- Go to 1Password > Preferences and select the Sync tab.
- Make sure your Primary vault is selected on the left side.
- Choose Dropbox from the “Sync vault with” pop-up menu.
- Click the Choose button and select your .agilekeychain file in Dropbox (then click Open).
- Click Merge with Existing to start syncing.
Does that help? Let us know how it goes and if you need more help with that. Thanks!

@tokyo_a: In regard to iCloud, it sounds like you purchased 1Password directly from AgileBits (which we appreciate!) However, Apple only allows apps purchased through the Mac App Store to use iCloud. I hope this helps clarify why you're not seeing the option yourself.
Definitely try Drew's suggestion and let us know your results. :)

Dear Brenty and Drew_AG,
Thank you very much. I still have a problem, as I am never offered the "Merge with Existing" button. I would have selected that if it had been an option, as it makes sense.
When I follow Drew's steps, everything is fine until the end. In the dropdown menu under "Sync", it says Sync Primary Vault with Dropbox. I choose the .agilekeychain file in Dropbox. Then my choices are "Cancel" or "Continue", the latter not being greyed out. Sadly, there is no "Merge with Existing".What next?
Thank you so much for your prompt and clear instructions.BTW, Brenty, I am offered the choice of syncing my Primary vault with iCloud. I don't know why this should be if I purchased from you directly. I did look in the app store, and have purchased it there. Is it possible that my problem is related to having purchased the app twice, once from you and once from Apple? It's entirely possible that I did that unintentionally.

@tokyo_a: I'm sorry if managed to confuse matters! iCloud Sync is supported in the Mac App Store of 1Password, but only the Primary vault can be sync'd this way. It sounds like you are, in fact using the Mac App Store version. I thought you might not have been since you mentioned iCloud was not an option you were given.
Let's go step by step to make sure we're on the same page. What we want to do is determine where you have your correct 1Password data and then either copy it to where you want it or start over with 1Password on the other devices and then sync the data over.
- Where do you have your complete 1Password vault? On your Mac, or on an iOS device?
- Have you saved 1Password data in any secondary vaults or on other devices?
For instance, if you have all of your data on your Mac, but some in the secondary vault, you can select the items (⌘A) and go to Item > Share > [vault name] > Move to send them to the other vault, at which point you can go to 1Password > Delete Vault... to get rid of the empty one.
Please let me know what you find. I look forward to hearing back from you. :)

Thanks Brenty. I'm sorry if I confused you.
I only have 1 Vault at the moment. It is the Primary vault and it is complete on a Macbook Air. I can't get that to sync with Dropbox (see my last comment: I can't get the option to "merge with existing"). I have another Macbook Air, a Mac Pro, an iPhone 6 Plus, and an iPad Air 2 that all sync with Dropbox correctly. But the Primary Vault with which these devices sync is incomplete (I am missing all logins that start with the letters "a" and "b").
So the only place that I have the data I need is on my Macbook Air, and I can't get that to sync to Dropbox and update all the other devices.
Does that help? Please advise. I don't like only having a backup of this data locally.

Hi @tokyo_a,
Okay, this is going to be a pretty screenshot intensive post so I apologise.
Is this what you see when you currently look in the Sync tab of 1Password's preferences?
The first window you should see when you select that you want to sync using Dropbox is
and after you've selected an existing .agilekeychain it should then look like this
Instead though is this what you're seeing?
Now to create that screenshot I had to be really quick with the ol'
⇧⌘3
. I can only see it for the briefest of moments after I click on the Open button in the finder window before it switches to Merge with Existing. If that isn't happening for you something is definitely not right. You have a couple of options, we could look at a diagnostic report to see if it reports anything about the .agilekeychain or you could try creating a fresh .agilekeychain in another dropbox folder and seeing if that behaves any better. It would mean switching the other devices over to it which could be a bit of a pain. We can assist with either option, just let us know how you would like to proceed.

Yes, that's precisely what is going on. I think the option of creating a fresh .agilekeychain in another dropbox folder is the best way to proceed. I don't mind switching the other devices over. Please let me know the best way to proceed to do that.

Hi @tokyo_a,
Now the following suggestion will work if you're running 1Password 4/5 on either Macs or iOS devices. I'll cover Windows at the end too but if you're running 1Password 3 for Mac or have an Android device let us know before proceeding as some of this might change.
There are two scenarios to cover. One is where you want to push the MacBook Air's vault to all of the other machines and devices regardless of what they contain (in essence we blow away the other vaults and push the MBA's vault everywhere). The other is where we let each machine and device sync their current vault with the new sync data that we'll create on the MBA.
Given you stated in your first post that you had to restore your Logins from a locally stored backup I suspect you may want to ensure that whatever is on your MBA isn't replaced with information on the other devices. I'll point out in the steps where it differs depending on which route you wish to take.
- Remove the
1Password.agilekeychain
from your Dropbox folder and let Dropbox sync this deletion. - On your MBA, enter 1Password's preferences and set up Dropbox sync following the normal steps. This time you should get a Create New button instead and it will create a new
1Password.agilekeychain
. Again, let Dropbox sync this change. - For each Mac you have you will want to do one of the following:
A. Follow our How do I start over with an empty vault? guide and then use our Getting started again on a new computer. This will push a clean copy of the MBA's vault to this Mac.
B. Launch 1Password on your Mac, it will complain that a problem has been detected and you will want to click on the Fix... button. This will take you to the Sync tab in 1Password's preferences where you can set up Dropbox Sync again and this time you should get the Merge with Existing button. - For each iOS device you will want to do one of the following:
A. Follow our How do I start over with an empty vault? guide and then use our Existing 1Password user guide.
B. Launch 1Password on your iOS device. You may see a partially obscured message (see screenshot below) but essentially you will want to follow our Sync with Dropbox guide to re-establish syncing. Now if you're wondering "but how do I get into my vault when I see that screenshot?!?" don't worry, just type your Master Password in as you normally would and tap Go. The keyboard will disappear with a successful unlocking of your vault and the entire message, along with the dismiss button, will become visible.
Now if you have a Windows machine involved too then they're quite different. They only store information in the .agilekeychain so removing the old one and accessing the new one created by the MBA will be just like if you followed option A above for the Mac (the start from scratched approach).
Now there are a few steps there so if you have any questions or feel uncomfortable at all please do let us know before starting, the last thing we want to do is get part of the way through and then panic. It would be a horrible time for you until we've responded and just not fun. So if you have questions do please ask
