How am I suppose to sync from Windows to Mac?

Hello,

I have just purchased a license for the win+ mac bundle, and I find it is "impossible" for me to sync from my windows machine to my mac due to:

  1. I live in China so that means Dropbox is blocked and I cannot use it to sync
  2. The bundle I purchased from your website gives me the web version of 1Password for mac. After googling for a while, I just realized two things:

    1) the web version doesn't provide iCloud sync capability
    2) I canno tranfter the license for the web version to a mac store version

  3. The reason why iCloud is so important to me is because the only way for me to sync from win to mac is this:

enable wifi-sync on Windows -> sync it to my iphone over wifi -> enable iCloud sync on my iphone -> sync my mac from the iCloud

So what are my options? Ask for a refund and repurchase a mac version?

Your Windows machine can't use iCloud to sync, sorry: that's limited by Apple to Macs and iOS devices.

You can use wifi to sync via your iOS device as a bridge but it's not recommended. That's because on each occasion you sync you have on your iOS device to disable sync with machine 1 and enable it with machine 2. There's an AgileBits post here which explains clearly why that's undesirable. (Even though that refers to two Macs the basic principle is the same.)

You might take a look at folder sync for moving 1P data between Mac and PC.

I'm sorry this is all rather complicated! Do please post again if you have more questions.

@chengg: Stephen_C is correct. While the Mac App Store version of 1Password supports iCloud Sync, 1Password for Windows, strictly speaking, does not.

Since it sounds like you are in a bit of a tough spot there, not having access to Dropbox either, there is one option that might work for you. It is possible to use iCloud Drive to sync 1Password data (as opposed to CloudKit sync, which iOS supports), but only between a Yosemite Mac and your Windows PC. If you need to sync the phone as well, that won't work for you either I'm afraid.

If none of those options works and 1Password isn't a good fit for you though, we can absolutely give you a refund. Please let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing back from you. :)

    Hi @brenty:

I have multiple Macs running at home and work. One machine is pre-Yosemite and others are Yosemite.

Also, I have a windows machine at home and I use the iphone.

While I can certainly use the iCloud Drive option you pointed out for syncing between my Windows machine and my Macs, I would prefer to have iCloud to sync all the Macs and iphones.

I have already sent in an email to refund the win + mac package I bought from your website and I will make a purchase of the Mac version from Mac store.

Is there a bundle for win + mac store version?

    Thanks.

@brenty @ Stephen_C The sync fold solution only works if I have already created the primary vault on my mac and then sync to my windows machine but not the other way around.

What happened to me was this:

I happily purchased the win+mac bundle and installed the win version first. I saved a few important accounts and wanted to sync it to my iphone and mac. I got the sync working with my iphone over wifi. Then I started to work on the Mac, after it is installed, the only 4 options I can see was:

    1 - sync from dropbox
    2 - This mac
3 - Another device (which points to a webpage rather than a device)
    4 - Restore

I was very frustrated at the point. Due to the dropbox option out of the picture, I was actually stucked. I hit the "worst possible path"

    So here are my thoughts:

1 - The product as a standalone applications works extremely well, which is why it has received so many positive feedbacks. But, without a proper syncing solution, it really hurts the overall user experience.

2 - It took me at least an hour googling to realize that there is a difference between the website version and the mac store version (even though you have a tiny line on the purchase page stated about the iCloud sync). How do you expect new customers to understand everything with only "*required for iCloud sync" on the purchase page??? I bet you get a lot of refund requests because of this.

3 - I read about the difficulties you guys faced about iCloud sync and why there are two mac versions. I see two solutions to help mitigate this issue:
    1) provide a guide page for Mac users step by step on your purchase page to highlight the differences
    2) provide a "folder sync" option when users click on the "I've used 1Password before" (dropbox only is too limiting)

This is just my 2cents. I had very high expection about your product while reading the reviews but really disappointed by these "little things".

    Hi @chengg,

I feel like I should give you advance warning that as iCloud Drive is only available in Yosemite and iOS 8, that 1Password 5 cannot iCloud Sync with the pre-Yosemite machine you still have. 1Password 5 uses CloudKit, a iCloud framework only available in the newer version of iCloud, often called iCloud Drive. As such combinations of 1Password 4 and 1Password 5 cannot sync via iCloud. As Mavericks cannot access iCloud Drive at all even @brenty's suggestion of using Folder Sync with your iCloud space wouldn't help. This combination of machines and inability to use Dropbox represents a tricky situation.

We will match the Mac + Windows bundle price even if you purchase 1Password 5 for MAS. All you need to do is email us with a copy of your MAS receipt and we will arrange for you to purchase the Windows version at the appropriate price.

I firmly believe we can improve our Running 1Password for the first time for a variety of reasons. While it isn't clear from the opening screen, you can use Folder Sync from the I've used 1Password before section by clicking on This Mac and selecting a .agilekeychain or .opvault located anywhere, including a pen drive.

My initial thought having read this thread is a combination of Folder Sync using a pen drive and Wi-Fi Sync for the iOS devices would be the most reliable method given the different versions of OS X and combination of Mac, iOS and Windows. We'll do our best helping with whatever approach you decide to adopt.

@littlebobbytables Thanks for pointing that out! By 'pen drive' you mean a cloud sync service like google drive and alike?

It's great to know that you will match the bundle price. I have already requested a refund by emailing your support email (with both win and mac's keys attached). so to proceed, I should:

1 - wait for the refund to complete
2 - purchase from MAS and email you the receipt
3 - you sent me a link to purchase the price adjusted windows version

    Did I miss anything?

    Hi @chengg,

By pen drive I more mean a flash drive or USB memory stick. While we don't directly support the likes of Google Drive if it works like Dropbox does i.e. presents itself as a folder on your computer that any program can write to, and Google Drive is accessible on all of your desired machines; Yosemite, pre-Yosemite and Windows then you may have some degree of success there. It is untested by us though so we can't make any firm statements. It won't work for your iOS devices I'm sorry to report but Wi-Fi with your primary Mac should be sufficient to cover those I hope?

As for the steps involved to pick up the bundle price you are correct, that is one possible way it can be done. I don't know if an alternative route will be suggested or not but regardless, it would come out at the bundle price.

I hope that helps and it seems keep an eye on your email
