Key or license file?
For some reason 1Password asked for my license today as if I had a trial version (been using 1Password for years, so I'm not sure why it did that now).
It seemed to be looking for a license file, but I couldn't find one on my computer. I asked to have my license sent to me via email from Agile Bits, but the email they sent was just a long key code not a file.
I originally purchased 1password 3 for Mac. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Django

Probably you never paid for the update.
!PW4 was a paid update, but due to a bug some people were never asked for the license after the trial had expired.
1PW5 is a free update from 1PW4, and uses the same license.
1PW3 used a license key, 1PW4/5 a license file. This would have been sent to you by email if you purchased the upgrade, but gmail for some reason gmail sometimes strips out this file, though there is still a link in the email to where you can find your license.
AgileBits staff will check their records to see if you have a 1PW4 license, but it is the weekend and they may take some time looking.

Thanks that is helpful.
So I paid for 1PW3 and then accidentally updated to 1PW4 which required another payment? That sounds like a rather tricky way to get people to pay for a new version. :)
Okay, I'll wait till an AgileBits staffer responds. Thanks.

You can go back to 1PW3 if you want to.
I am sure that however you updated from 3 to 4 it would have been clearly stated that it was a paid upgrade.
More often than not with any program an upgrade of the main number is paid, so it is what to expect. It's good fortune when the upgrade is free, as from 1PW4 to 1PW5.

Hi @DjangoH,
I tried looking for a record associated with the forum email address you use but I couldn't find one. I'll assume that what you've discovered so far and remember is true.
Now it's hard to say, given you may have been running 1Password 4 for a while now exactly how you moved from 1Password 4 from 1Password 3.
When 1Password 3 informs you of the 'new' 1Password 4, if you click on the upgrade button it takes you to our store where you can purchase an upgrade licence. It doesn't go for an in-your-face approach to informing you that 1Password 4 is a paid upgrade but it doesn't direct you to our download page.
However, if you were to go direct to our download page you can simply download the latest version of 1Password but it is a trial version. Our approach with the trial is a completely unlocked version of 1Password - so all features are usable. When you add the licence file it simply disables the trial and you continue as you were. So I suppose it's about finding the right way of communicating to somebody that it is a full copy but if you don't have a licence then it starts off as a trial. If we said download your trial now people would want to know where the full copy is.
Anyway, as @danco has said, you are free to return to using 1Password 3 if you wish. Your licence is still valid and as long as 1Password 3 remains functional (as development has ceased it is possible changes in future versions of OS X will break 1Password 3) then you can continue to use it.
So it depends on how you would like to proceed. We can help you switch back to 1Password 3 or if you like 1Password 4/5 you can purchase an upgrade licence, the choice is entirely yours. Just let us know and we'll help.

Hi,
Thanks for replying.
Can you look me up under removed by AgileBits? I think that might be what I purchased it under.
If i have a license for 4 or 5 then please email me the file and I should be fine. If i don't then my question would be what happens if I downgrade back to 3? Will all of my info and passwords still be there? How do I transfer the data, etc.?
Thanks,

Hi,
Any chance I can find out what my options are yet today?
Thanks,

Hi @DjangoH,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I've removed your email address from your post as these are public forums that the likes of Google do scan here. I did copy the address first though to check our records and what I found is you do indeed have a licence for 1Password 3 only which you purchased in 2010.
Now the encrypted .sqlite database file we store your vault in since 1Password 4 isn't compatible with 1Password 3 but if you were to go through the steps of enabling Syncing to a local folder and pick
~/Library/Application Support/1Password/
then when you reinstall 1Password 3 it should find it straight away. Everything that is in 1Password 4 will be there and visible to 1Password 3.Now if you have any issues please do let us know and we'll help you out.

Thanks for the info. I will probably update my version.
I like your product but please make it clear when updating to future versions that it is a paid upgrade not for free and that it is not compatible to go backwards. I feel like I was tricked into upgrading to a version I now have to pay for because the trial ran out months later. Doesn't feel good.

Oh, and thanks for deleting my email. Much appreciated.

Hi @DjangoH,
I'm very sorry for any confusion about all that! We certainly never intended to trick you into upgrading. I don't know exactly how you first moved from 1Password 3 to 1Password 4, but as littlebobbytables mentioned, if you saw a message in version 3 which told you about version 4, clicking the upgrade button in that message should have taken you to the store on our website in order to purchase the upgrade.
On the other hand, if you simply went to our download site and downloaded a copy of 1Password 4 from there, it would have had no idea which version(s) you previously purchased so it wouldn't have been able to correctly let you know if you needed to pay for an upgrade. It would also have been a free trial of 1Password 4. Normally that would let you know you were using a trial and would have expired after 30 days, but there was actually a bug in 1Password 4 where, in certain cases, an unregistered/trial copy would not expire (it sounds like that's what happened in your case). That was fixed in version 5, so that could explain why you just started to see the Trial Expired message recently. Again, I apologize for the confusion!
If you're not sure if you want to upgrade, it might help to take a look at this knowledgebase article.
If you decide you want to upgrade your license, you can visit our Upgrade Store and enter your license key to see your eligibility for a discounted upgrade. Or if you decide to go back to 1Password 3, that's fine too and we'll be happy to help you out with that. Either way, we're here for you and want to make sure you're able to get things working correctly! :)

Thanks, Drew. I just upgraded to v5 and it was discounted for me since I own v3, which certainly took some of the sting out of it.
Yeah, I'm not sure what happened either, must be the bug you mentioned. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. Much appreciated.

I'm having the same issue where I'm being asked to "buy" post trial - although I did pay for the upgrade to 5 (from 3). I've followed the documentation to have the file re-sent but it only sends the liense numer - not a file that can be chosen and loaded into 1P 5. Help Please.

Hi @dorothyt7 ,
I'm sorry that you've been having trouble here! I have located your license details in our back office records, and I'm sending you a private message with a link to download your license file. The page you see will advise you on how to apply this file to 1Password.
I hope this gets you all sorted out, but we're here if you have any further questions or concerns!
