1password.app won't open

Hi there,

1password5.app on Mac won't open. I get the error The application “1Password 5.app” can’t be opened. what should I do? Please help me quickly!

    Trash app (directly, do NOT use an app cleaner, as they may delete data as well). Empty trash. Reboot. Redownload and unzip. Best if 1PW is in the Applications folder, I'm not sure if it works from another folder.

    This the first and recommended thing to try. If there are still problems, post again.

    Hi @BasStraub,

    I'm sorry you're unable to open the 1Password app! The steps from danco will most likely solve the problem for you. If not, it will help if you can let us know the full/exact error message you get when trying to open it (or perhaps post a screenshot of it). Let us know how it all goes, thanks!

    I am using Yosemite 10.10.2

    upgraded 1password today and then it crashed on open.

    moved app to trash, downloaded 5.3 and installed.. and now (to much relief) 1password opens

    I know these kind of problem can happen.. but they shouldn't especially when it looks like this happened earlier this year:

    @BasStraub: Great! I'm glad it is working for you! :)

    @techyhippy: It sounds like the file became corrupted when you downloaded it the first time. I'm glad to hear that downloading a fresh copy worked for you as well, since that means there isn't something wrong with 1Password (or our download server!) Cheers! :)

    @BasStraub: Yeah I am glad it works too!

    To be clear first time round (when the upgrade resulted in a crash) I didn't manually download the file. It was downloaded and installed via your 1password auto-update tool. Just a guess but perhaps you need a md5 checksum in their to ensure the file has not been corrupted before the auto-update installs what it has downloaded.

    @techyhippy: Ah, thanks for clarifying. We do, but unfortunately that won't prevent data corruption after the fact. Fortunately bits are cheap and we can always give you a new copy! :+1:

    I really hope that Apple (or somebody -- anybody!) implements a mass-market filesystem that cares about data integrity, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms. :lol:
