single device lost

Hi

in the situation i lost my iphone, how do i access my 1password to delete all information stored on the iphone device if i only have a single ios device?

i know i should change my icloud password and place the ios under lost mode, but how do i access 1password?

my icloud has two step verification which is only accessable via 1password on my phone!

thus:
no phone means no 1password, which means no icloud or google access (as 2step verification enabled)

What would i do in this scenario?

    Hi @shahab121,

Thanks for taking the time to write to us about this.

There are a few things you can do, but the way that you currently have things set up puts you in a very tight spot if you lose access to your device. Two step authentication is great, but by having access to that information in only one location severely limits your access to your data in that scenario.

delete all information stored on the iphone

1Password does not provide this function, but iCloud does:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/ph2701?locale=en_US

Of course if you use iCloud's multi-step authentication and only have access to that through the device you've lost, you're in trouble. So I would recommend either:

Investigate switching to Dropbox for storage of your 1Password data, and do not use multi-step authentication, store it on a separate device, or use SMS authentication so that you could replace your device keeping your same phone number and still have access. Switching to Dropbox would also give you the ability to use 1PasswordAnywhere:
    https://support.1password.com/guides/mac/1passwordanywhere.html
(note that two-step authentication codes are not currently available via 1PasswordAnywhere)

Installing 1Password on a second device (perhaps a Mac or Windows PC)

    how do i access 1password?

The way you are currently set up: you probably wouldn't. You've essentially backed yourself into a corner. I would highly recommend re-evaluating your setup.

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Hi

    Thanks for your advice.
I always thought 2-step verification was the ultimate for security, but i can also see the problems it could potentially cause.
My reasoning for 2step to be held within 1PW was for extra security. If i used the Google app and lost my phone, the phone could be easily unlocked and the theif could have full access to my google account (with all my photos and other data).

I am interested in using dropbox ignored to attain 1PW anywhere. I could see the full benefits if i was to lose my phone.
But again, i don't have 2step which is another layer of security lost.

So to confirm, must i choose between a higher level of security with 2 step enabled on 1PW (but potential devastation if i lose my device)
    or
a lower level of security (but total flexibility if i lose my device?)

    ??????????????????????

its a great shame i can't use google for backup similar to dropbox anytime.
I would use dropbox if there pricing wasn't so expensive compared to google.

I suppose my dropbox password must be just as important as my 1PW master password?
I don't even know my passwords (other than Apple & Google as 1PW can't automatically log into them when pop ups occur on my screen).

Sorry for asking such basic questions, but since joining the 1PW group, I've never been so organised and secure!!

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi @shahab121,

The ideal situation would be to have 1Password synced to multiple devices so that you could both use two-step authentication and still have access to that two-step authentication information if you were to lose access to a single device.

Alternatively you could manually make regular backups of your 1Password data using iTunes:
    https://support.1password.com/ios-itunes-backups/

That way if you were to lose access to your device that has 1Password on it you could use those backups on another device to access your 1Password data.

Keep in mind that both security and availability are important concepts here. A vault which no one knows the combination to and which is buried in 6ft of concrete is very secure, but not very practical due to availability issues.

I would use dropbox if there pricing wasn't so expensive compared to google.

For the amount of data the vast majority of folks store in 1Password Dropbox's free option will work.

I suppose my dropbox password must be just as important as my 1PW master password?

Essentially: yes. You would need to know your Dropbox password, and ideally it would be as strong (but different from**) your 1Password Master Password. You could memorize it, or write it down and store it someplace secure like a fire safe. We'd recommend doing the latter with your 1Password Master Password as well -- just make sure to keep your records updated if you ever change passwords.

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Hi

Thanks for that, I'm now backing up on a regular basis.
    Another question please.
I wanted to purchase 1PW for my wife (to use on the family MAC), but when i proceeded to purchase within the APP store, i didn't need to pay as a note popped up " you don't need to purchase this app as a family member has already purchased it".

    Is this the case?

Well all went well and i started my wife on 1PW, but then the next day she forgot her master password. Thus we followed the instructions to delete all data within the "Libray folders and move certain files onto desktop and restart".
We must have attempted this several times along with installing and reinstalling.

I gave up and tried to download the app again from the APP store, which after the 6th time worked and all is ok.
    But
I received an invoice this time?
Pls confirm if this is correct?

    Also

I could get her IOS to sync, an error message saying an error with iCloud occurred.
I followed instructions to delete previous i cloud vaults and currently there is only one vault that is working ok.
( on the mac, it doesn't sync unless i exit and return, it doesn't sync if i click sync now.

    What must i do?

    Thanks

  • Hi @shahab121,

The App Store is run by Apple, not us, and so I can really only offer my understanding in this area. Apple has a guide on how Family Sharing within its App Stores is supposed to work, here:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201060

It does seem odd to me, if you were using the same Apple ID, that on the first attempt you were not charged but on the sixth attempt you were... Unless you changed Apple IDs in the process? Unfortunately I don't have any access to Apple's records, either for Family Sharing setup or purchases. Only Apple would be able to confirm for sure if the charge is accurate or not, and if the latter make any adjustments.

As for syncing: I'd like to see a diagnostic report from her iOS device. You can find instructions on creating one here:

    https://support.1password.com/diagnostics/ios.html

Then attach the entire file to an email to us: support+forum@agilebits.com

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can quickly track down the report and ensure that it is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks in advance!

    Hi

I have changed my master password via my Iphone, but my Macbook has not updated the new password yet after 10 min.

I checked under preferences/sync, & the correct option for icloud is shown, however the "sync Now" option is not available.

Thus after restarting and shutting down a couple of times, it has shows the last sync, which was a couple of minutes ago.

But, the new password updated via my iphone has not updated?

(there may be a connection to another issue here. On my home desktop Mac, im the second user with my own log in details. I cant seem to log onto 1PW as my password is not recognised there at all? previously things all worked ok till i changed the master password today?)

  • Hi @shahab121,

Thanks for writing in about this issue. Just to make sure I understand:

You have three devices with 1Password on them, all syncing via iCloud.
You changed the Master Password on the iPhone.
The MacBook still unlocks with only the old password, not the new.
The desktop Mac doesn't unlock with either the old or new password.

Does that sound right? If so can you please let me know which version of 1Password you have on each device, and for the iPhone and the MacBook are other changes you make to your 1Password data syncing correctly?

    Thanks!

    Hi

    YEs thats correct.
    Macbook: 5.4 (540046)
    Iphone (6.0.2 (602002)
desktop, not sure as not at home

  • Thanks, @shahab121. If the MacBook and the iPhone are still otherwise syncing without difficulty then you can simply change the Master Password on the MacBook as well:

    https://support.1password.com/change-master-password/mac.html

As for the Mac you cannot login to, I'd recommend deleting the 1Password data on that (unless there are items present that have not synced with the other devices) and start fresh there, syncing with iCloud:

    https://support.1password.com/starting-over/mac.html

I hope that helps. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

    Ok Thanks.

So to confirm. The password wont automatically update on the Macbook (once changed on IOS) & i must manually change it for both devices to sync correctly?

say for example i lost my macbook and wanted to change the master pasword for security purposes, i wouldnt be able to as using this method, i would require the stolen macbook to make the changes?

Am i correct as this seems dangerous?

    Thanks

Normally this is an automatic process, but we are aware of some cases where it does not change automatically and must be changed manually. It does not appear to affect syncing otherwise in the cases we've seen. Of course if sync is not actually working that can be the reason the change is not reflected, which is why I asked if sync was otherwise working okay.

say for example i lost my macbook and wanted to change the master pasword for security purposes, i wouldnt be able to as using this method, i would require the stolen macbook to make the changes?

Changing the Master Password is, unfortunately, simply not an acceptable solution to this problem. An attacker could just disconnect the lost/stolen device from the internet so the change is never received.

How would you perceive changing the Master Password as being beneficial here? An attacker would not known your current Master Password, nor would they know the new one. Making a change doesn't seem to have any positive effect? Unless of course you were using a weak Master Password, in which case you are in all sorts of trouble anyway. :)

The proper solution here is to always use a strong Master Password, prevent the lost/stolen device from syncing any new changes you make, and then changing all of your passwords.

    Thanks.

    Hi

My iPhone & mac book Master password changes are not syncing.

The Information & passwords are syncing, but not the master password once changed.

    What do i do next?

You may need to change the Master Password on the other device:

How do I change my Master Password

    Hi

Im aware how to change the password on all devices.
I wish my passwords to change automatically.

I brought this question up before and assumed 1PW was experiencing technical issues. Are you sure the only way to sync my passwords is to change them manually?

I can't imagine any other email/security service provider having this same process to change a master password?

  • @shahab121,

The intention is for the process to look like this:

    • Change the Master Password on one of the devices
    • Wait a few moments for changes to sync to the sync provider
    • Unlock 1Password on other devices using the old Master Password, to initiate a sync
    • After the sync completes lock 1Password
    • Unlock 1Password using the new Master Password

The primary difficulty is that 1Password does not ( / cannot) sync until it is unlocked. So it has to be unlocked once using the old Master Password in order to sync down the change to the new Master Password.

If this is not how things are working for you, we'd need to gather some additional information to troubleshoot further. I'd like to ask you to create some Diagnostics Reports, one from each of your devices:

Attach the Diagnostics Report(s) to an email message addressed to support+forum@agilebits.com.

Please do not post your Diagnostics Report(s) in the forums, but please do include a link to this thread in your email, along with your forum handle so that we can "connect the dots" when we see your Diagnostics Report(s) in our inbox.

You should receive an automated reply from our BitBot assistant with a Support ID number. Please post that number here so we can track down the report(s) and ensure that this issue is dealt with quickly. :)

Once we see the report we should be able to better assist you. Thanks very much!
