iCloud Sync with the AgileBits Store version of 1Password

I am confused about what is and it not possible for iCloud syncing with the AgileBits store version of 1Password - I have a Family licence for this which I purchased long before the Mac App Store existed.

I have been happily syncing 1Password on my desktop iMac to iCloud using the "slightly different" process as described in the user manual section 3.1. It syncs with my iOS devices no problem at all.

Recently I have acquired a Mac laptop as well and installed the same version of 1Password onto it. But I don't see any option for this new installation to link to the data synced in iCloud. And section 1.3.1 in the user manual says that it's not possible to sync to iCloud with the AgileBits store version of 1Password.

So the manual says in section 3.1 that you can do this and says in section 1.3.1 that you can't.

No wonder I am confused! Can someone explain please.

1Password Version: 6.0.1
Extension Version: 4.4.3
OS Version: OS X 10.11.2
Sync Type: iCloud

  • Hi @cliff_brown,

I'm sorry that this has been a bad experience for you. Let me try to clear things up for you.

1Password for Mac from the AgileBits Store is capable of doing iCloud Sync now (what section 3.1 refers to). Unfortunately, what it can't do is start you off with your existing iCloud data (what 1.3.1 refers to). We're planning on making that possible, it's just not there yet.

There's a simple workaround for that though.

    • When you're at the setup screens when first starting 1Password, choose to create a new vault. Use the same Master Password as you would have used had you unlocked your iCloud vault.
    • You should now be looking at an empty vault.
    • Go to Preferences > Sync
    • Choose to sync your Primary vault via iCloud
    • After a few seconds you should be brought to your browser and asked to sign in with your Apple ID
    • After a few more seconds, you should be brought back to 1Password, and you're ready to click Start Syncing

That should be about all that's required. In effect this is exactly what would have happened had we added the ability for you to start from iCloud in the setup screens, we just would have automated a few of those steps for you.

    I hope this helps.
